Pick up your plastic guitars and rock out to your favorite rock songs from the 50s to the present!

Guitar Hero is a series of games based around playing along to music using a guitar controller peripheral.  The game was concieved by Red Octane, who saw the success of Guitar Freaks in Japan and wanted to create a similar game for the western market.  Red Octane approached Harmonix Music Systems, who were known for music games such as Amplitude and Frequency, and the two companies collaborated to create the original Guitar Hero.  The game proved to be a surprise hit, and a sequel (Guitar Hero II) came out a year later, with an expansion, Rocks the 80s, coming out shortly after that.  Soon after the game's release, Harmonix were purchased by MTV Games, while Red Octane were purchased by Activision.  Retaining the rights to the game franchise, Red Octane would work with Neversoft, known primarily for the Tony Hawks series, to create future Guitar Hero titles.  The franchise is adding additional instruments to the mix, as Guitar Hero: World Tour is due to allow players to play drums and sing as well as play guitar.

On a February 12, 2009 conference call, according to xbox.joystiq.com, 3 new Guitar Hero games will release by mid 2009, including a Metallica based Guitar Hero, another DS game, and a compilation game.
