Boss Assistance

When the Bad Guy finds himself heavily outmatched, why not call for some backup to even the odds? Boss Assistants try to focus the player's attention away from their leader, and may even pose a threat in great numbers.

Bosses

Video game bosses are usually the main antagonist, and arch nemesis of the main protagonist. In most cases the end of a game is when the main character defeats the final boss.

Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.

For all these games, it is illegal to sell or make them available to minors in Germany and it is illegal to advertise for it in any form. This includes the mere presence of a game in the shelves of a store.

Cheat Code

Special codes or button combinations used to gain powers or advantages in a game. Generally hidden.

Cowboy

A person who herds cattle on ranches. A cowboy became an iconic figure during the late 19th century in the Western part of the United States.

High Score

A ranking system for comparing point values between various players. The player with the highest point value is referred to as the "High Score", listed in 1st Place.

Horse

Equestrians that go 'neigh' and tend to eat hay. Some are the stars of motion pictures.

Horse Riding

Horse riding is mostly used in games to get around from one place to another quicker than you could on foot. They can also sometimes be used in combat or racing.

Infinite Ammo

A concept in a game where the playable character can't run out of ammo, and doesn't need to pick up/buy ammo. In some cases, you still have to reload your weapon, but you have an endless amount of clips.

Mounts

Where players can ride an animal or machine for movement speed advantage.

Multiple Enemy Boss Fight

A boss fight in which the player must not only battle the actual boss, but must also defeat or defend against auxiliary enemies.

Native American

A member of any of a number of tribes or ethnic groups, indigenous to regions of North America which are now part of the United States. Many of these groups continue to exist as intact legal and political entities.

Ninja

Legendary, stealthy assassins from Japan's feudal era, who are ridiculously well-trained in the art of the sword, and who may or may not have access to magical powers. If you ever manage to see a ninja, you're already dead.

Nintendo Seal of Quality

The "Seal of Quality" was a gold seal Nintendo put on the boxes of games it officially licensed. Originally Nintendo used it to restrict games on their systems. It still appears on games today, despite the restrictions being far less strict.

Racial Stereotypes

A designer can use a racial stereotype to make a character easier to understand, though in the process the character often comes across as offensive and hurtful.

Side-Scrolling

Side-scrolling games present the world as viewed perpendicular to the direction the characters are facing on screen. With a heavy focus on lateral movement, objectives are often met by moving from one end of a stage to the other.

Smart Bomb

A super weapon, often found in scrolling/rail shooters which destroys all enemies on screen instantly.

Vertical Scrolling

In a vertical scrolling game the player usually starts from the bottom of the screen and moves up. They are also almost always presented in a top-down perspective.
