Anyone think this level is up there with the resident evils or the silent hills of this world for sheer spookiness. Well, obviously the first time you play it.

Yeah ravenholm was pretty creepy, wouldn't quite equate it with RE or SH levels though

Yeah that level is hard especially when you don't know whats coming. That part where you have to climb the building and activate that stuff sucks you get attacked so much there.

Ravenholm felt like an entirely different game to me. Thats part of the reason why I hate/love it. It was nice and spooky the first time through but upon subsequent playthroughs i just power through it as fast as possible so i could get back to the rest of the game.

Once you go to the part with the super fast black headcrab zombies rushing you it was definitely a good thrill, didn't expect it to be that well done, but they nailed a horror themed level pretty well.

Ravenholm made me hate the Gravity Gun ='(. I kept losing the saw heads, so I had to just shotgun through all the zombies.

I thought it was extremely creepy when I played the demo, but not that much playing Orange Box.

Ravenholm is the reason why I don't play horror games.  I love Half-Life though (except for that part), but I'm still thinking about getting Left 4 Dead anyway.

I didn't think it was too creepy wile playing it on the Orange Box. The best part of the game though... from what I played - I only borrowed it from a friend.

Ravenholm is probably my favorite part of the game. There are just so many cool ways to kill zombies, and since zombies aren't really an immediate threat, you can look around for the coolest way to kill them. I personally liked paint buckets :P

It is very unnerving, the visuals, music, and everything made me very on edge through the entire thing.

Well Left4Dead really isn't as horror based as people think it is,besides the fact that there are zombies, its basically a super fast paced co-op fps with tons of enemies on you at once. They aren't really aiming for horror ,I'm sure it can have a few unexpected moments but other than that it just looks like a fucking blast.

i thought ravenholm was the worst level in the game and not spooky at all.
I liked the intro the most really, if you'd count that (where you get your gravity gun and meet DOG)

Me too, it felt almost out of place.  For me it's all about Father Grigori.  He's a fantastic character, and makes the level interesting.  Without him it's a bit of a strange digression, and in terms of being spooky, outside the fear of poison headcrabs it wasn't really there for me.

That's what I loved about that level. Looking around for a saw blade or a barrel to throw. Then those super tough head crabs.

A great example of quality level design.

I almost think that it didn't quite fit with whole Half Life 2 theme or whatever.  It was alright but it just didn't seem to flow.

Well,I've never really played RE or SH..So I can't comment on that....but that level was creepy and it was my favorite in HL2.....
There is an achievement for beating the level only using the grav gun.....That's gonna suck.... >.>

iunno about being as scary as RE or SH... actually it might have been

    the reason?

valve makes the atmosphere in Half Life feel so real and it engages you

ravenholm is no different. the atmosphere was crazy

Ravenholm will restrain me from re-playing Half Life 2 all the way through for quite some time I think.  As far as the atmosphere goes, it really is all about the hanging, flaming corpses and the ominous rantings of Father Grigori.

It was one of my favorite parts! I found it really scary..
It basically marked the beginning of the real HL2. Everything before it seemed like one large ZzZ.

Actually I wasn't very scared or even into that part of the game, Half Life "zombies" aren't exactly menacing.  I guess the ones that can run fast and jump are but it's fairly easy to speed run the part they are in.

When i played the Half LIfe 2 demo for the first time, I was scared as fuck.
The introduction to ravenholm with "nobody goes to ravenholm" and the sight of someone's legs hanging from a tree and the shack with blood and corpses everywhere, was probably the scariest part for me.

Interesting to hear people's various responses to this topic.  I found Ravenholm really creepy myself and got totally freaked out when coming against the super-fast zombies - at least when they were unexpected.  The gravity gun stuff with the saw blades and explosive cylinders was good fun but the atmosphere really got to me and I actually wanted the whole experience to end as soon as possible.  I agree with some others here that that level would probably restrain me from replaying HL2.

Ravenholm was my favorite level in the game. Scary and very exciting. The whole atmosphere of that level was incredible. Throwing those saw heads and stuff was a lot of fun and I jumped on seat when one of those fast zombie suddenly attacked me.

I hated Ravenholm. I don't really know why, but it wasn't nearly as fun as the other areas of the game.

Although it seemed a bit shoehorned, I loved the design. Jumping across rooftops with high-speed zombies in pursuit? Quality.
