Half-Life
A celebrated series of award-winning FPS games which has consistently pushed the limits and expectations of the first-person shooter genre since its inception.
Is anyone here worried about what the final product will be of Half Life 3?
I don't want it to come out. Pretty simply. Maybe write a novel covering the events, or tie it in to future games, but HL3 shouldn't exist as a thing. I don't doubt that they're working on it, but they shouldn't be.
Luckily Valve is one of those developers that has a shitload of money and doesn't need to worry about a publisher breathing down their necks. They don't have to rush and they don't have to meet any crazy milestones. When it comes out I'm confident that it will be just fine. Will it be as awe-inspiring as HL2 when it came out? That remains to be seen. However I can say with no hint of doubt that it will sell a shitload, Think of the installed user base of people who own at least one of the Half Lifes. Everybody who has Steam has it. They basically give it away every few months. Hell I have a copy of HL2 and Ep 1 in my inventory that have been there since 2007.
The thing people keep forgetting about Duke Nukem Forever is that the game we got was like the third or fourth version of that game. The entire project was a mess because they kept scrapping and retrying. I'm sure Valve has a much more cohesive vision as to what they are going to do with Half-Life 3. Secondly, if they are going to upgrade the source engine what better way to show that off than with Half-Life 3?
Valve almost always seem to put out quality products. HL3 may not be able to be as good as the wait implies, but inherently it'll still be amazing.
I kind of hope the ending sucks. It would be amusing to see if the people who complained about Mass Effect's ending would complain with such hostility towards Valve (not that everyone who didn't like the ending got hostile, but some people's reactions did get kind of ridiculous).
The thing is, we don't know anything about it, which automatically makes it not duke nukem forever; that game was shown for years and years before being released in the state it was.
None of us know anything about it, so we, theoretically, don't have any expectations from it as a game, necessarily; plot, yes, but as a game? no.
I doubt we will see a seamless continuation of Episode II, seeing how they wrote themselves in a pretty tight corner. I expect a substantial time-skip (a few months at least).
I've yet to be disappointed by pretty much anything valve makes so I'm sure if/whenever it comes out that it'll be pretty good. Maybe not OMG AMAZERING but I can't see it being a bad game. The rumor of it being launched with the new version of their engine makes a lot of sense.

Question: I tried to play the first one a few weeks ago and....it really has aged to the point that I didn't want to put up with it. Is 2 the same way or will I enjoy it, mainly the story as that is why I play games.
Half-Life 2 is an impressive game, even today.
I'd legitimately find it hard to not call it timeless.

I just said that 'cause I know most people thought it was a disappointment, and it worked for what I was trying to ask. The way that game was made is beside the point. Also, I was just playing the Orange Box, and the game still looks pretty good! It's kind of amazing, but it's not really up to date with the best looking games, and I'm hoping when it comes to the next Half Life game, it'll be like Half Life 2 and blow people away again. I haven't seen a Valve game look much better than the original Half Life 2, not even Portal 2 or Left 4 Dead 2. Those look good, but I'm still hoping we'll get better. You know what I mean? When it comes to Half Life 3, I want people to see it and say it looks as good or even better than what the competitors are putting out.
Protracted development is never a good thing; however, Valve are definitely not comparable to 3D Realms...
Also, keep in mind that Team Fortress 2 was in development for almost a decade.
Eh, I really liked Half-Life, but Half-Life 2 and the episodes never clicked with me, so I don't really care about Half-Life anymore...
Even though I do still go back and play the original Half-Life (and expansions) every now and then, in my opinion that game is (still) better than Half-Life 2.
It will be the Steam Engine 3 debut, it will involve Gordon Freeman crowbarring his way into the Aperture Science factory to find a cure for Alex, on his journey he will find a Portal Gun, he will make his way though Portal levels until he gets to the end which activates a bomb that hits the whole world and turns them into zombies, he then has to make his way though zombie invested city to find his Team at the Fortress to give Alex the cure. This game will simply be known as.....Three.

Just about everything in Half Life 2 is still amazing.I think, while it's still dated in aspects, it's a lot of fun. The only thing I don't like about the game play now is that ever since iron sights were largly brought into gaming, it just feels like there's something missing. The one thing to take away from the original Half Life, for me personally anyways, is that the intro was great. Ha ha. What do you know about Half Life 2 so far? It's hard to imagine anyone missing out on such a game. If you play it, I recommend you take the first 15 minutes or so slow, walking around and soaking up the atmosphere. It's still amazing. One of the best atmosphere's a game has ever had.
I feel like they release half a game at a time, years apart, which is why I find the blind trust and loyalty to Valve pretty baffling.

I know very little about Half Life 2 except people love that game and seemed like one I should play when I got a PC. Well since I really didn't get a good PC until a few months ago I picked up both HL 1 and 2 from Steam sale and was very excited. I really liked the intro and set up for the 1st game, thought it was brilliant and was cool for something that was from 98 but after the accident and such it felt really outdated and I didn't want to slog through it after 4 hours of playing (got to the tentacle monster and said fuck this) so I'm a bit worried about HL 2 in that it starts great and then turns into generic said shoot from 04 or whenever it came out.
I do care if it comes out or not - I want it to - but it's not something I think about or lose sleep over or anything like that. There's too much else for me to enjoy right now to give this one old game any more thought; frankly, the amount I care is slipping away little by little so if it doesn't come out at some point in the next year or two, I just won't give it another thought. I'm not holding out for it.
I am supremely confident that if Valve cannot make a Half-Life 3 as mind-blowing as first two were at their release, then they will simply never release the game. As I recall, they said with Portal 2 that they wanted "surprise" players again, and I think they largely succeeded with that. Likewise, unless they feel the game is going to live up to expectations, they won't put it out.
Since Valve funds all of their own development now, it's not like they're going to be forced to put the game out sooner or later. They'll take all the time they need to make it as amazing as everyone wants it to be, and if it turns out that's impossible then the game is never coming out.
If they can't make it live up to the hype, then they won't try.
