Personally, all I really want is to use iron sights and better graphics that'll surprise me. I don't want to play Half-Life 3 and see something only slightly better than Left 4 Dead 2, but rather it be up there with the best of today's graphics (or better). Also, I think it'd be nice to mix the unique style of soundtrack Kelly Bailey uses with a bit more cinematic orchestra to get some of the character emotion down a little bit better, though what's already be established was no slouch. Everything else I think Valve can handle on their own without any suggestion.
Half-Life
A celebrated series of award-winning FPS games which has consistently pushed the limits and expectations of the first-person shooter genre since its inception.
What do you want (or expect there to be) in Half Life 3? (topic five years old)
I just want it to come out at this point, if Portal 2 and the ARG preceding has proven anything its that I fucking love Valve like no other developer. Chances are when I play it, I'll love it.
Its an ass-backwards, optimistic as fuck way to approach things but Valve have earned it.
I heard there is a lady in that series? I think ladies are good. Maybe there should be more of them.
Also, it would be totally super awesome if they gave Gordon Freeman a really silly voice, and then patched the previous games to make him talk all the time.
:D Yes. High res barnacles!Barnacles...lots and lots of Barnacles.
- A new engine, I really don't think they can get away with it being in Source.
- The story and characters must be amazing - as good or better than Portal 2.
- Good combat - Something as good or better than the final battle of Episode 2.
- It's obviously not going to be a puzzle game like Portal 2, but it should still have some good puzzles.
- I will accept nothing short of breathtaking visuals.
- A good variety of interesting weapons.
- Just an amazing single-player campaign - No multiplayer, co-op, in-game store.
- Interesting achievements like the Gnome thing in Episode 2.
- Barney.
1. Source Engine 2.0. Source is a great engine, but I don't see how far it can be expanded. HL3 needs something radically new (maybe that's why Valve are taking so long...each Half Life is their poster boy for the new engine?).
2. Maybe allow for expansion of the story into a galactic battle against the Combine. So like HL1, set some of the game on other planets (maybe the Vortigaunt home planet?). It just seems silly to have only humans fight off the Combine when the Combine could easily find a way back again with all their superior technology.
If Portal 2 is any precedent, space is awesome.

I wouldn't be surprised if they implemented a new game engine though.
I am worried at this point they can't release a game that would live up to any of the hype everyone gives the idea of a 3rd installment. As much as I love Half Life, they redefined gaming with half life 2 (don't try to tell me they didn't, they are pretty much responsible for making physics such a big part of gaming as we know it now) and unless they could do that again with a fantastic story and all the other big deal they had with Half Life 2 I am more concerned it wont live up to anything we'd all expect from a Half Life 3.
I suspect Valve feels the same way, which would explain why they haven't released or mentioned anything of it. I am always open to being wrong, and with Valve its highly likely that I am, but with all the long term developments over the past couple years I can't help but feel that kind of thing hurts a franchise more then helps it.
Just my thoughts on it. I'm really tired so it may not make sense, oh well.
I really only expect awesome. That's what I've gotten from previous games, so I hope that it's featured in the next one.
Fo realz, I'm actually hoping the game jumps like the second one did. You're in City 17, and the details of the whole situation are pretty sparse. I want to be thrown into an unfamiliar place for unknown reasons, and I want it to all come together and blow my mind.
I think most people would just like it to be released...Better: An announcement!
Personally I'm kinda over Half-Life. Just lost the connection and hype for that series.
It's hard to know what to expect. Both games brought new stuff to the table that have been copied in many other games since their release, so it's hard to predict what could happen. I have zero expectations for the game though, because I think it's a little much on my part to ask them to bring something new to the table three times in a row. That's just setting myself up for disapointment.
I unlike the rest of you dont mind a new engine , source is brilliance made reality (as you can see Im one of those who is enjoying EYE as of now :P) and it fucking runs on any computer. As for the game itself .... well its been proven that Valve can make some of the best fps action , heck I still play with wonder and awe HL 2 , so unless they make it a COD clone , I dont see them screwing anything around. The only thing I would ask for is for the sniper rifle of the combine .... its the blue laser .... it calls me and iron sights.

How about any story whatsoever.
Stop and pay attention, not everything in life is spoon fed to you, read the writing on the wall, listen to the citizens, stop and smell the roses and you might actually find one of the most subtle and engaging stories in video gaming.
I honestly don't expect it to ever come out.
Now that Valve is getting the F2P business they are realizing that low budget F2P games can make as much if not more than AAA premium titles.
So Half Life 3 will forever be a myth.

These are the very things I want
-A new plot, not just the same combine affair
-New enemies
-A open world
-A inventory system and documents
-A new engine
-Choices and Consequences
-The same Half Life elements
-Return of the houndeye
-Stealth
-Possible conversation trees
-New vehicles
-A laser gun
-New weapons
-Coop
-Good puzzles
I have no expectations, so I'll be satisfied with anything. I do think it'd be cool it they paired up the Portal games to Half life in some meaningful way, instead of just teasing at it.
Just to finish the amazing story they've had going so far.
Yes. I would hate to see that get dropped. It might be interesting if they warp it out of that strict FPS into some kind of hybrid, as a previous poster wanted.
But keep rolling that story.
I honestly don't know what I expect from that game when it comes to how it will play or what the story will be. I will say that I think it's humanly impossible for Valve to top Half Life 2. They've dug themselves into a hole where the final installment has to feature some dumb Lord of the Ringesque final battle against the bad guys, and Im just not into that idea when it comes to this series. But that's where it will end up... If it comes out, of course.
All I know is I want the ending to be Gordon riding off into the sunset, alone, on an open desert road in his muscle car. I don't care how they get there, but that's what I want. I want Gordon to go out like fucking Clint Eastwood.
@redfoxbennaton: uhh, so you want a completely different game that's, pretty much, fallout 3? Most of the things you said do not belong in a half life game.
Now if I worked at Valve...
I would be better at designing games than anyone here including me and thus would hopefully have better ideas than anyone here. If I've learned anything over the years, the best games are the ones that surprise me by NOT being what I want or expect. If Half Life 2 had merely been an extension of Half Life 1 it would never have come even close to living up to the seemingly unreachable expectations people had for it. The only reason it met those expectations was because it did things that no other game had done before and that no one had even imagined could be contained in a single game.
If there is one thing I think I can say with certainty I would like improved on, it would be the excessive amount of loading seen in the Source Engine. Having to pause every ten minutes to load in a new area was a real pain, and it was something that hadn't been fixed by Portal 2 so I am going to assume it is just not possible in the Source engine. Therefore I would extend my request to an entirely new solely next gen engine. The Source Engine was arguably the first current gen engine and it pushed things to levels previously unimagined so better graphics in larger areas that don't require excessive loading.
Lastly, I would like it if they did NOT include iron sights and NOT make this some sort of single player/multiplayer hybrid.
Nothing, I honestly don't care at this point and would rather Valve worked on other things instead of making a game that cannot live up to the expectations people have for it.
Maybe a Half-Life game where I think more than the first and last 15-20 minutes of the game are the only good parts about it?
Given previous form though, that's really unlikely. Which is weird because Portal and Left 4 Dead have both been pretty great at not being horrendously boring series???
Hey! So, I was just thinking about it again. Funny, after four (and then two as I see I had noticed it was brought back two years ago), my opinion stands the same about what I want from it, plus, really, four years... I went back to Black Mesa and played up to the point you fight a bunch of marines and a helicopter shoots you. Honestly, all I really need is iron sights. Not all games need it to be fun, but Half Life just feels like it's missing it to me, so it doesn't feel as good as it could be. Hopefully this isn't locked since this is old, as I hope to hear more thoughts on it now. I see a lot of people really just want it to be talked about more, but I am hoping to see more than just that. By now, I also definitely hope it's much better than how Left 4 Dead looks, ha ha.
Furthermore I know this is old, but @beeftothetaco - Not sure if you come on here anymore, seeing by the fact you aren't subscribed, and you don't have many posts, but nope, I wasn't trolling. Iron sights is what is needed to me. It doesn't necessarily have to be in the face iron sights like COD; it could be more like Chronicles of Riddick, or F.E.A.R.
Iron sites in a Valve game? Off with your head! It's kind of funny, iron sites are the go to think in FPS games these days, it's just how you do it. I realized by the end of the new Doom, I hadn't zoomed in on iron sites with a single gun, it went against the grain and it felt right. I could see another Valve game handling it well without them once more then, but it wouldn't be a negative if they were in there.
Anyways, from 2 years 7 months ago, I agree with...
Answers. I want answers and closure. Gameplay-wise I couldn't care less 'cause I found it pretty dull in HL2.
Sort of, the first half, I liked the gameplay myself, but on the same page with answers. I don't need it to be the most revolutionary game to ever be, I don't need it to blow my mind, I just want it to take the great characters and cool mystery and world it built up and put a cap on it, they don't even need to get crazy with it, just put a bow tie on it. You find the lost ship, there is a portal to like super duper alien world, Xen 2.0 and you tell the leader to knock it off and go home and touch Alex's shoulder. Just... it sucks the built it all up and never finished it and never even acknowledged it. Bluh.
