I love Half-Life, but seriously, Xen was the worst.
I love Half-Life, but seriously, Xen was the worst.
As part of time's relentless campaign to make me feel like an old-ass man, this week marks the tenth anniversary of the original Half-Life. It's kind of hard to believe it's been that long since I first took that tram ride into Black Mesa, wasted a full pistol clip frantically trying to shoot one of those jumpy goddamn headcrabs, and eventually cheated my way through the ridiculous Xen ending (Xending.) And to think, the first-person shooter I was really excited about that year was SiN. Talk about backing the wrong pony!

In a cheeky nod to the game's year of release, Valve is celebrating the occasion by marking down the original Half-Life to the scandalously low price of 98 cents on Steam. However, it's a limited-time offer, and today is your last day to get in on this ridiculous bargain. I have serious doubts about the playability of the original Half-Life in this day and age, but 98 cents is a small price to pay to revisit such a watershed moment in video games.

For an FPS, Half-Life has aged very well. But Xen is still, and always has been, fucking awful.

I'm not into the series and so the anniversary doesn't make much of an impact on me, I'm also only 16. But I get what you mean. For me? I'll feel old when Halo turns 10...

I missed the dialog when the scientist tells you how to do that extra long jump thing, so when i got to xen i kept dying when trying to jump from platform to platform, over and over and over.......still love that game, but what was up with the crazy fast ninja gun ladies in the later part of it?!

Oh it still plays beautifully. I replayed the original a couple years back, and I still enjoyed it as the first day I played it. Man those marines are still some of the smartest AI enemies in a game.

There are few games that have ages nearly as well as Half-Life has.  It is still a lot of fun, even all these years later.  If you don't have own it, you should pick it up.  Great game.

I'm glad I didn't know Xen had a bad rap when I played Half Life, because I loved that part.   It turns out that other people's opinions are generally useless.

    Half-Life > Real Life

That is all i have to say on the matter. Ten years is a long time and its both disappointing yet astounding just how much the games industry has moved on since this amazing classic.

    Congrats Half-Life on ten years!
Sadly, I only joined the Half-Life phenomenon when Half-Life 2 came out for Xbox 360 in the Orange Box, but it quickly became one of my favorite FPS games.  Seeing as my computer still remains ASS and inable to play anything at all, I suppose I'll celebrate Half-Life's ten years by playing more of Valve's newest game, Left 4 Dead.

98 cents is a steal.  I think the game could hold up just missing some stuff in todays day and age.  Graphics and animations, that its.  The gameplay is still fucking solid as well as weapons and puzzles.  Though I never got why people hated Xen.  It totally changed up the pacing and feel of the game at the right time and gave you this great feeling, like alright, all this shit i have done was to get one chance to fuck up these aliens from the inside out.

The $0.98 is a great deal for anyone who hasn't played the original yet, as it is still a classic. Luckily I have the original HL in one of my old Steam accounts, so no need to shell out a buck. ;)

Half-Life is such an awesome game.

If you haven't played it yet, go for it.  The gameplay completely holds up even after all these years.  The enemies are smart and the level design is fantastic.

Wow I was 14 when this came out, I remember getting it for Christmas here in the UK at the time I didn't realise how much of a classic it would turn into, Half Life 2 just turned 4 years old already. I remember booking a week off work to play it all the way through

Half-Life is classic and still plays incredibly well.  Sadly, when Valve released Half-Life: Source, there just wasn't much Source to it...which was upsetting.

However, once the Black Mesa TC comes out, we'll TRULY get Half-Life: Source.  =  D

And new media went up for that last week...  =  D

I wouldn't have felt so old if it wasn't for the fact, thinking back, I had already finished Uni and started the job I'm still in at the time! Given HL is an FPS, and in general they age really quickly it still survives well, although last time i played the original is was the Source Engine based version.. not sure if that's the one they are offering for the $0.98... bring on HL3, or Episode 3.. or anything with The Freeman!
