I am 117% confident that footage is not from a Halo game that has been released. There has never been a shaking helmet hud in any of the games.
Halo 4
Game » consists of 6 releases. Released Nov 05, 2012
The first game in the second saga of the Halo sci-fi series has the Master Chief awakening from cryostasis as he explores the mysterious Forerunner shield world Requiem, fights a newly-formed Covenant group, and accidentally awakens an ancient evil.
So, looks like this is the first Halo 4 footage.
This has me ridiculously anxious. Like, I realize that I've become unreasonably attached to the Halo franchise and this transition to 343 would have me irrationally concerned for its future, but this has me on a "first time I told a girl I loved her" level of tense. I shouldn't be this emotionally invested in a fucking video game. But I am.The embargo for info and footage Halo 4 is up tomorrow morning 6:00 pst.
Let's just hope it plays out better than that whole girl thing.
@JazGalaxy: I don't really see it that way, I have read books too obviously, but the reality is that a lot of people find Halo to be emotionally engaging, it is about investment in the universe.
The Elite side of Halo 2 was full of emotional resonanceto me, there are moments in that game that still give me goose bumps they are so sombre.
I won't deny that video games as a whole are fully eclipsed by literature and film in regards to storytelling. I tend to feel people who think otherwise are a bit foolish myself. But there is one thing video games do for fiction that other mediums just can't match, and that is world building. There have definitely been books and movies that had me immersed in a fantasy world before, but none come close to immersion I've found in games. That sense of place inside a universe gives a certain weight to story, and thus a resonance to plot and characters that aren't treated with nearly as deft a touch as you would find elsewhere. It's a strange balance that I don't fully grasp, but for whatever reason, the Halo games seem to have walked that line perfectly for me. Though the fact that I've been playing them obsessively since I was 11 may be a significant factor.
I'm not saying halo being a poor example of literature is because of its medium. I think games can be the most effective medium of all time. But, I think most of them fail because they never make any statements or ask any questions. Halo is just an adventure story that got up its own butt about its hype. It's a 13 year old boys story. slightly more literate than something like Zelda, but still too immature to be of any real significance. If halo wants to honestly do what they preten they've been doing, they're in a good place. Give me the emotion of being lost and lonely. Give me questions about the nature of existence. Give me the wonder of discovery and frontier ship. Explore the relationship between cortina and master chief that's so intimate that she lives in the guys head, but so distant they can never actually touch. But don't give me zombies, explosions and car chases and pretend its meaningful.
@JazGalaxy: I think the books handle that aspect quite well, the nature of Johns existence quite specificity, I also think that Reach tells an amazing story that can be felt because, well we lose, and, despite everything we try, we all die for a greater cause. Something rather unique in any form of storytelling.
I find that once again it is about perception, I personal look for more than what is on the emediate surface because I am so invested in the story, so the emotion of losing a character, the hardships of the Spartans lives, or the the love between Chief and Cortana that is so tragic in a way, those things can be felt.
But if you're asking for any form of Si Fi to make you question the meaning of life you are expecting too much from it.
You are right though, there is still room to grow, and hopefully it will. Though I'm not sure how much I want it to. I enjoy Halo as genre fiction, but I respect your position and am willing to concede this one to you.
Looks like the Assault Rifle from Reach and the Battle Rifle from Halo 3 had a baby. And it looks pretty good.
Also it clearly got a sight on it - can we expect a more modern aim-down-the-sight mechanic than in the past Halo games?
@big_jon: Oh right, I forgot about that, and me calling myself a big Halo fan and forgetting something so basic :P
You're probably right - sights will most likely be like in previous Halo games where they're only meant for long-range engagements (Battle Rifle / Carbine, Sniper Rifle / Beam Rifle... and the goddamn Pistol).

Here's a glimpse of some Halo 4 gameplay.
EDIT: Also, super excited for this game!
I can't help but feel a Crysis-esque style in the art and animation...
Agreed, but I feel like that works for Halo.
Why red spartans fight blue spartans? Red vs blue explains it the best if there is another reason i don't want to know it.
Also, most exciting this about this is that red vs blue can use this now.
I like this thread. The desperation for new footage of a long awaited sequel reminds me of my BF3 insanity. You start turning blurry videos into gameplay tutorials in your head.
Looks like they are throwing in some Call of Duty flair into the multiplayer. Customizable loadouts and abilities that are unlocked through a progression system.
I like the audio. Sounds impactful. Hate the visual design. Everything I've seen so far looks clunky and over busy. It's weird to complain about too much detail, but I feel like their are just a lot of unnecessary bits on everything. The possibility of perks/loadouts in a Halo game has me concerned. I thought armor abilities in Reach were largely a misstep, and this sounds like it will do even further down that path. Customizing you're own class can be fun, and it keeps you invested in the game, but that's never been what Halo's about. I'd be sad to see one of the few remaining "pure" multiplayer FPSs go.
@Slaker117:
I'm sure they'll be a playlist in multiplayer that ignores the perk/custom loadout stuff, just like in Reach there were ones without the jetpacks and even playlists that played like the original CE version. Though I suppose that was Bungie not 343, but I doubt they'll make it any less of a game than Reach was.
This does have me very excited, despite my nitpicks. Interested in seeing and learning more. I just hope the whole loadout thing doesn't mess with balance. That's my biggest worry right now.
@Slaker117: I'll wait, I think perks could be nice, it is simply a mater of implementing them right.
I understand the worry, but I thought Reach did them pretty well consitering it was the first Halo game with that kind of thing, I am thinking that they might me a little more minor this time.
Still need to see more to make a decision if I will buy this...hopefully we get some nice new facts from E3 ;)
