Rumor: 343 Industries Remaking Halo: CE On The Reach Engine

Posted by BradNicholson (812 posts) -
343 Industries will be picking up the Halo series where developer Bungie left off following the release of Halo: Reach. But according to a rumor making the rounds, 343's first Halo game won't be this follow-up we're all expecting to see. Instead, it'll be a rerelease of Halo: Combat Evolved, rendered in glorious HD courtesy of the Reach engine. And the date we'll see it according to this rumor? Sometime in 2011, which means it could arrive in November, just in time for this monumental game's 10-year anniversary.

This rumor is brought to us by the latest issue of Games Master magazine, which cites "industry chatter" as its source (via CVG). No other details were apparently provided.

== TEASER ==One big problem with this rumor, as Eurogamer points out, is that Microsoft Games Studios executive Phil Spencer doesn't seem too keen on HD rereleases. In an interview with IGN from earlier this October, Spencer said that the "thought of re-doing a bunch of things is probably difficult to just weave into the overall portfolio."

He added that while he doesn't spend much time thinking about this subject, "there could be possibilities" for remakes from MGS in the future if customers see some sort of value in the idea. Ironically, it seems like IGN asked Spencer for his take on this subject by offering Halo: CE and Halo 2 as examples of hypothetical HD rereleases.

Meh. Pointless. That engine isn't particularly great. Not for remaking at least.

#3 Posted by BertieWooster (59 posts) -

I thought Microsoft was against HD remakes...

#4 Posted by Peacemaker (1107 posts) -

I support this.

#5 Posted by natetodamax (19220 posts) -

I am not a fan of this idea.

#6 Posted by DeadFish (229 posts) -

Why not put Halo 1 and 2 on the Games on Demand service with updated multiplayer, instead?

This.

It's not like it's begging for a remake either. It would still play the same essentially. There's no real benefit to it being remade.

do want. i will pay 60 for an hd halo 1. fuck haters

#9 Posted by Belonpopo (1822 posts) -

I like this.

#10 Posted by Redbullet685 (6090 posts) -

I'd buy it.

#11 Posted by InfiniteGeass (2059 posts) -

I would buy this day one if it happened.

I think they should instead figure out a way to make it possible to play ranked matches on Halo games without having to download the DLC packs.  Really was hoping Reach would play out differently, but it hasn't.  In turn, I've got little interest in Halo anything right now.

#13 Posted by This_Dude (295 posts) -

haters gonna hate.  This is a great idea if it's done well.  I still consider Halo: Combat Evolved the best in the franchise.  both single player and multiplayer.   Maybe that's just nostalgia talking, but I'm sure i'm not the only person that would pay retail for this remake.

I hope this is BS.  I want to see 343 Industries take halo in a new direction instead if just sqeezing out another game in the bungie style.

not that the bungie games are bad or anything but with a new team incharge of halo I want new ideas.

start from scratch (gameplay wize) instead of just building of what bungie did.

To me it depends on what 343 is really capable of.  I'd rather have a well made Halo 1 remake than a shitty Halo entry.

#16 Posted by EdTwo (474 posts) -

i hope its just a rumor

#17 Edited by Marz (5672 posts) -

eh.. didn't really need a remake the original still looks decent by today's standards.

#18 Posted by ESREVER (2698 posts) -

Can they re-make Marathon instead? I never got to play that :(

#19 Posted by borgmaster (515 posts) -

well, they gotta put out something while figuring out what to do with the franchise.

Wait, so does this just mean upping the pixelcount or whatever, or would they straight up recreate Halo, but now with Reach's graphics? That might be cool. I dunno how much the graphics have aged, it's been years since I played it (which probably answers my question).

@This_Dude:  Couldn't agree more, I have no idea what about the internet gets people so pissed off.  If they don't want it, don't buy it....

Halo CE is in my opinion, the greatest console shooter of all time. I sunk days upon days playing it online with hideous lag through Gamespy & XBC. The game was incredible regardless of not being able to shoot anything.
#22 Posted by mazik765 (2316 posts) -

Haters gonna hate. I'd buy this.

#23 Posted by fillmoejoe (1469 posts) -

Not the 343 project I was expecting, I was ready for Master Chief: Adventures.

#24 Posted by gizmo88 (109 posts) -
@EdTwo:  Everyone of your comments is negative. Glass is half empty huh?  Cheer up man!
#25 Posted by ProfessorEss (7523 posts) -

Well made?
Fairly priced?
Why not?

#26 Posted by Tarakun (225 posts) -

If it's got unlimited grenades, that pistol, and online play, I'll buy it.

#27 Posted by ShaolinSpade (161 posts) -

I actually like the Halo CE engine the most in the series. It's the only Halo where I can cover the walls and ceiling of a room with purple blood in one massive grenade chain reaction.

#28 Posted by gizmo88 (109 posts) -
@MysteriousBob:  Good thing you don't decide, or else we'd only have J RPG's to choose from. :p
#29 Posted by weegieanawrench (1943 posts) -

I'm buying it. I've been inching closer and closer to the games on demand version, but with this announcement I will happily wait until late 2011.

#30 Posted by tobygw (580 posts) -

I want

#31 Posted by Death_Unicorn (2838 posts) -

My logical being finds this pointless.

My inner Halo: Combat Evolved fanboy would be excited.

#32 Posted by T0mF5 (929 posts) -

I had this idea months ago.

#33 Posted by Colonel_Fury (453 posts) -
If this is 343's first Halo release, I'll be a bit disappointed.

There's a perfectly good reason:

People will gladly shell out money for a game with master chief on the cover.

Nice detective work there!

ohh wait...

I'll admit, it took about 6 hours longer then what I thought it would take.

Anyways...to put my 2 cents in...I think it's total bogus as I think MS would want to advance the story not re-tell it. Unless it's a side project and Halo CE is only getting an HD version a-la God of War Collection.

#36 Posted by BBQBram (2294 posts) -

Seems like a good way to get the definitive Halo experience for newcomers. It's the original plot without the convolution, with smooth next-gen controls and graphics.

#37 Posted by Rawrnosaurous (758 posts) -

I want this,

Unfortunately for everyone of the internet royalty who look down on the halo franchise as some plebeian wretch stealing glory from those they deem it's better, Halo is a great game and will hopefully get this done. If not in the next couple years then down the line.

#38 Posted by Korolev (1729 posts) -

IF this rumour is true, then I have nothing against them remaking it. It couldn't take up that much effort - they're just making it HD, it's not like they're rebuilding the entire game from scratch. Like how they made Perfect Dark into a HD game, they could just remake some textures to boost the resolution. It's not easy, but it's also not the most difficult thing in the world to do, well, for a studio that is.

Sure, if they want to do it, let em. It's not going to cause much of a problem for anyone who doesn't want to buy it, and it will please fans that do want to buy it. It's not exactly as if this will take up serious resources and time to accomplish.

#39 Posted by niamahai (1394 posts) -

Halo franchise is dead-in-the-water w/o Bungie.

But I like the idea of special "Halo CE Reach Remake-Rendtion" 10 year anniversary thing.

#40 Posted by Babymauler (46 posts) -

I am all for this. Many friends were ps2 people back in the day. They missed out on halo: ce and 2 and had expressed intrest in playing them when reach came out. But since we live far appart a remake with modern xbla support for coop would be great. And the fact that game is 10 years old freaks me out a bit... getting old :(

#41 Posted by xyzygy (10079 posts) -

I'd get this. That story told in HD would be awesome.

#42 Posted by otronix (1 posts) -

This sounds great - the original MP maps were the best.

#43 Posted by Jeffsekai (7054 posts) -

Oh god please do this!

I would play the shit out of an updated halo.

#44 Posted by Jayross (2365 posts) -

So, Gears of War in 2011, and a Halo-remake?

Thank god I bought a PS3 last week.

#45 Posted by Evilsbane (4749 posts) -

SQEE that would be awesome, fuck all you naysayers there are people that actually like Halo because its fuckin Halo I cant wait for it to take the next step BUT its not like there are 50 halo games theres 50 billion Mario, Zelda, Metroid games but no one seems to complain because they are GOOD GAMES like....halo...hmm

#46 Posted by geflato (8 posts) -

Would be a nice way for 343i to get their feet wet as a team before releasing a major halo 4. They have alot of solid talent over there.

#47 Posted by Dopey2400 (72 posts) -

If they produce it then I'll probably play it, but if they don't then I could care less.
