Halo: Custom Edition is a multiplayer expansion to the PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved, ported to the PC by Gearbox Software. It is a free expansion, but it requires the use of a key code from Halo: Combat Evolved. It was released as an unsupported version of the game by Gearbox Software. It allows players to play with user-generated content created in the Halo Editing Kit. Halo: CE, as it is commonly referred to, also added a different net-code. This helped to reduce lag for players, but for some it made it worse. Custom content ranged from maps, new weapons and even drivable vehichles such as the Transport Pelican or Covenant Tank which featured in Halo: Combat Evolved but could not be piloted in both the campaign or multiplayer.
Halo: Custom Edition allow players to create custom content through the use of the Halo Editing Kit. Available, from many Halo community sites, the Halo Editing Kit is essentially the development tools that Bungie used to create the original Halo. The kit includes various tool such as, a resource and tag editor, mapping and object placement editor, and a map resource compiler. Original content must be modeled in 3D Max, or Gmax, and then converted to a compatible format. It can then be added to the map. With these tools, users are able to make completely original maps. Later, the Halo Editing Kit Plus was released. It allow users to completely rip everything from a map and mod it entirely.

As of today Halo: Custom Edition continues to involve an active community of both players and content creators, with websites such as Halomaps.org as a place for content download and community discussion.
