In order for me to be interested they need to do something different with the tone and atmosphere of Halo.

I liked the trailer. Got me somewhat interested in a Halo game which is one series I really could care less about.

I thought it had kind of a Modern Warfare or Bad Company feel to it when I watched the trailer.

Yes about the new tone. As someone who is in the vast minority that the Humans shouldn't have won at the end of Halo 3, what this trailer is indicative of is very exciting for me. If its Gears of War meets halo with not as much gore and dismemberment, I'm secured.

But there was nothing in that trailer to indicate what the game will actually be like. It was just a bunch of Spartans doing exactly what spartans do best, looking badass. I got the same vibe off the Halo 3 and ODST trailers.

I agree with you guys that the color should be washed out and it should have more blood and be more like MW, because Halo just isn't derivative enough as it is.

I kind of wonder how most Halo fans would react to a Halo third-person shooter.  It would definitely changes things up a lot.

Completely agree with this statement. Sadly, I don't think they will. That will be changing the "Halo" atmosphere just too much for them.

No, I'm definitely with you there.
I've always liked that Halo stayed away from the dull brown and grays we see in every other FPS.

But setting the game during the collapse of a planet was always going to change the tone pretty drastically.  I'm sure we'll at least some more interesting environments later in the game.
And if nothing else, it's great to see the Elites back.

@chstupid: Not at all. I really liked the bright colors and whatnot from the previous Halos. I'm actually a little bummed that they're going in this grim, washed-out, "skull painted on the helmet" direction. But whatever, it'll probably be fun and I'll probably buy it.

EDIT: Doesn't going in a Gears of War-esque direction sound like a bad move? These are the two biggest 360-exclusive franchises, and I'd imagine that the last thing you'd want would be for them to become too similar.

I am sure this game will still have the Halo feel. Just a more grown up version . This will not be a happy story guys and it needs a more serious tone. changing things a bit will help enforce that.

I really don't think Halo is at the point where it needs to mimic other games to succeed. I think I'd rather see them continue to go there own way. Whatever, though, I still haven't watched the trailer yet. Maybe tomorrow.

I think I'd like a darker Halo.  I'm still personally really pulling for a Star Wars Republic Commando action strategy squad based gameplay style.  That game was pretty dark for a Star Wars game too, oddly enough.

I never really got how you could make a Halo game more violent other then by adding stuff like limbs being blown off and head being blown off or something from sniper shots. Making it bloodier doesnt really make it more violent when the covenant are still gonna bleed purple and green and stuff. This game if it follows the book just screams squad based shooter since in the book you had Chief at ponit and then the sniper chick and the explosives guy. A squad based/class based Halo game could be cool. Maybe then the multiplayer could actually be something like humas vs covenant which would be good as long as one side doesnt have big disavantages like past Halo games.

The best way to make a game more violent is the animation. If they can improve the last few games jerky animation, they could make it that much more gritty. It would be good if they could include the 'bleeding out' effect that's in Killzone 2 and Gears of War.

How is being more like some other popular thing being different? What few identifiers Halo still has of its own as a mothership shooter (Teen rating, great color pallet) they seem to be sending down the stream to pander to trends and that should bum real Halo fans out.

Wow. Name one Halo game that's rated "T" (other than Halo Wars.) and a grim atmosphere and more violence has NOTHING to do with a coler pallet.

Animations can make it be more serious and so well, cartoony. Halo 3:ODST (the only Halo I have) felt very, cartoony. Jerky animation and words like "What the heck?" instead of other choice words made it feel almost childish, like it was barely hanging on to its "M" rating.

Halo's always been on the soft side of M- how something like Uncharted gets a T but Halo has an M baffles me.

Bungie's moved up to mocap for Reach asopposed to the hand-animation they were using before, so that will likely address your animation issue.

That's what I'm saying. Halo: Reach is definatly looking alot more "grown up."

Animations can make it be more serious and so well, cartoony. Halo 3:ODST (the only Halo I have) felt very, cartoony. Jerky animation and words like "What the heck?" instead of other choice words made it feel almost childish, like it was barely hanging on to its "M" rating. "
Halo's always been on the soft side of M- how something like Uncharted gets a T but Halo has an M baffles me.  Bungie's moved up to mocap for Reach asopposed to the hand-animation they were using before, so that will likely address your animation issue. "
That's what I'm saying. Halo: Reach is definatly looking alot more "grown up." An article at Gamespot said it was like Gears of War with Spartans, now that's a strong statement. "
Indeed. Say what you will haters but Gears of War had a really dark tone. Halo with that type of tone is quite significantly different,

The Covenant had no chance when they replaced the Elites with brutes equipped with terribad armor. Their fur from Halo 2 was more resilient.

I wanted the humans to lose in Halo 1 and 2. They always won and it makes this terrible alien race kind of pathetic.

" @DystopiaX: That's exactly what I mean, too tonally similar. Those series have very different attitudes--Gears of War being gritty and bload-soaked, and Halo being bright and majestic.  "
I think that they could pull of the gritty thing, i mean they pulled off the almost noir-like atmosphere in ODST, so Bungie is definitely capable of more than bright and majestic. I'd wait to see more, but i think they're more than capable of pulling off a dark and gritty atmosphere.

@DystopiaX: I don't doubt that they could pull it off. I just think making the two major Xbox franchises MORE similar is a bad idea.
