Microsoft Sponsoring 'Halo Fest' at PAX Prime 2011

Posted by Alex (2021 posts) -

Because no company can ever resist celebrating ten years of anything, Microsoft today announced it'll be making a big show of the series' tenth birthday at this year's PAX Prime, sponsoring an in-show fan-oriented extravaganza it's calling "Halo Fest." With the Halo franchise's decade mark quickly approaching, many among us may find ourselves suddenly realizing that we have gotten really, really old.

Any PAX Prime badge-holder can access the event, which promises to offer a wide-variety of tantalizing delights for the Halo enthusiast, including tournaments, exclusive panels, and prizes. Hours will run all three days of the show--which is scheduled this year for August 26th to 28th in Seattle, WA--from 10am to 6pm. More details are expected to come along via the Halo Waypoint website in the near future.

Though we currently still have no immediate clue what Microsoft's next entry in the Halo lineage will be, at least this event should provide ample opportunity for like-minded fans to intermingle and share in their particular, specific passion amid a whole convention's worth of people doing more or less the same thing for passions possibly not pertaining to Halo. And hey, now you have an extra special excuse to dust-off and don that epic Master Chief costume you spent weeks welding together out of used car parts and motocross gear. Finally, you can show it off to a crowd that will love you for you, and you won't have to risk being upstaged by the likes of the roughly six dozen girls dressed like Yuna, or that sonuvabitch Pyramid Head guy who somehow gets all the ladies' attention every single year. What is it about that guy, anyway?

Goddamn, saying "ten years of Halo" makes me feel old.

And lol it's been awhile since I've come to an article when it was just posted, good to see everyone spamming one to two words trying to be first as usual. We really ought to get rid of that quest.

Guess there's just no room for Nicholson anymore. Alex and Kleb are churning out the news recently like a well whiskied machine.

#4 Posted by RE_Player1 (7557 posts) -

I've never been to a PAX before but to people that do go, is it getting more and more corporate? I heard the guys talk about the last one saying how booth babes and pre-order tickers were coming in and that does not sound like a good way to improve PAX. And this just seems like another corporation getting in. Am I just an outsider looking in or is this becoming a legitimate problem?

Leave PAX alone, damn it.

@RE_Player92:

not really, marvel  and DC always have big booths at conventions. it seems like an appriopriate place to let fans celebreate halo.

Seems intresting , wonder if anything will be announced

I wonder why Brad 2 isn't getting in on the news anymore.  Maybe he was just a freelancer.

Even though I think the idea of a Halo Fest is kinda ridiculous, PAX is probably the right place for it. It is a video game festival after all. I can tolerate it.

NIcholson said on Twitter a short while back that he's moving on to other opportunities.

Also he was being relentlessly hounded on twitter and in the comments for what most considered shoddy writing.

If it is just some corporatey corporatism then I agree, but if turns out to be more of an exchanging of thanks, laughs and plasma grenades between developers and fans I think PAX would be the perfect place for it.

It was obvious about the complaints over here, but on twitter too? Lookin' pretty harsh with all the harassment he's gotten over this, even though he really wasn't that great of a journalist.

No.   They do NOT allow booth babes at PAX.  It's is NOT getting more corporate.  Yes, you preorder tickets.  They sell out FUCKING FAST.  So do hotel rooms.  I don't see how ticket preorders make the thing "corporate"
Relax. There were booth babes at PAX East and when I said pre order tickers I meant for games. Take Brink for example, I'm not sure if that was the game exactly, they had a booth on the floor where you could pre-order the game there and the amount of pre-orders they got was displayed on a monitor.

@RE_Player92:
Sorry the caps came across wrong, they were for emphasis not rage lol.  Ok, the booth babe thing at PAX - they will allow companies to have girls that are dressed up as characters from their game.  And from my experiences at PAX, these girls usually have worked on the game themselves too.  But they don't allow booth babes that are just in skimpy little tops and shorts who are ditzes that couldn't answer a single question about the game :p

I don't recall seeing stuff I could preorder at previous PAXs but it's possible.  Although I'd imagine that's up to the individual retailer/exhibitor.  It's a gaming convention... people want to sell their games.  Makes sense to me.

This being integrated into the show would be really dumb to me if Bungie hadn't already finished with Halo. Given the circumstances - 10th birthday, Bungie moving on, and being in the hometown - this is a pretty cool thing to do

I think PAX is more corporate in size and scale but not in a way that would cause problems for people.

http://stickskills.com/article/1536/pax-east-booth-babe-controversy/ There was booth babes at PAX east, friend of the site Eric Pope talked about it on a women in gaming panel he was on.

Hmm I had heard rumors, and had heard PAX respond to those rumors, but this doesn't sound like what they said in their response.  I don't go to East though, just Prime, so I guess I can only speak for what I've seen at Prime.

Really? You guys are outstanding. So when you're not sending offensive and sexist messages to  Leigh Alexander, you're busy saving the world. Just wow.
#28 Posted by craigbo180 (1739 posts) -
@melcene: I don't blame you, no booth babes had always been their policy which is what triggered the controversy. This is not meant to be a corporate event it was meant to be a bunch of like-minded people meeting up, having a good time and playing some video games. Personally I think booth babes are the bane of the industry and this was discussed on this panel with Eric Pope but I can't remember what it was called now, but it was related to that lady who wrote the metroid other M review and got slaughtered primarily because she was female. With so many people against having booth babes at PAX hopefully they will not be making return appearances.

Sometimes nerds are just happy to play games.

They did allow them at PAX East. It was a big talking point during the show. And as for pre-ordering, I'm pretty sure he was talking about the abundance of pre-order stations at the show where they are enticing you to reserve the game to get swag. PAX East 2011 was fairly odd in a way.

If you think the Penny Arcade guys aren't in this process for the moneys you're kinda naive.  PAX became corporate the minute it had a charity attached.  Charities are formed as tax breaks.
