Sounds like you know a lot about the Halo storyline because I didn't understand that last sentence at all. I want to get into the storyline. Should I start with the books or just start buy playing through Halo: CE?" The weird thing about the Halo storyline is that they actually made this incredibly detailed, well fleshed out universe with likable characters you can care about... and then used only a tiny fraction of that quality when crafting the storylines for the actual games. The novels are surprisingly good, is what I'm trying to say. Anyway, you shouldn't have a problem with ODST's storyline, it takes place immediately after Regret's ship jumps to slipspace in Halo 2, and you find dead Elites here and there as an indicator of the Covenant Civil War; other than that it's not directly related to the events of the games at all. I can also recommend all of the novels in general, though The Fall of Reach and Ghosts of Onyx are definitely a step above the others.

So basically it's Halo novels, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo novels, Halo 2 (halfway), ODST, Halo 2 (2nd half), Halo 3?" " @TheMustacheHero:Nah, Halo Wars is a pretty self-contained story. Although of course all the Halo games technically take place between novels, because Contact Harvest details the start of the war, and Ghosts of Onyx takes place pretty much concurrently with Halo 3.
Yeah, that's the gist of it. Just to make it even more confusing, Halo Wars takes place between two of the novels, I think , and it looks like Halo: Reach is gonna have the same setting as one of the novels. "
