I really have trouble understanding the Halo storyline. Maybe it is because I started the series at Halo 2, mostly played online and never finished the campaign. I bought Halo: CE a few years ago but only played a few hours of it and stopped. I've played through Halo 3 once at launch but then went straight to online and I still play online. I'm reluctant on getting ODST because of this reason but I want your opinion, should I go back and try to play all of the Halo games starting from Halo: CE? Is it worth it?

The original Halo is my favorite in the series, so I would recommend playing it anyway.

What's so hard to understand.
  • A collection of Aliens who wants to make humanity go bye bye,.
  • Humanity says FUCK YOU ALIENS
  • Aliens says FUCK YOU TOO, and continue to on their quest to erase humans
  • Humans make super soldiers that never take off their armor
  • Aliens Glass an entire planet
  • Big rings in space that kill everyone
  • Another alien race that wants to infect all life
  • Another alien race that build the rings but one of them pressed the on button, No more ancient alien race.
  • Master Chief says he going to finish the fight
  • Master Chief finishes the fight
  • MAN I am lost.

Maybe? I thought Halo's story kinda sucked, but that's just my opinion. If you're interested in the story why not go look at it's wiki page here on the site? Perhaps that would give more insight.

Personally for me when the flood came in and they started talking about Prophets and forerunners I was lost.

The weird thing about the Halo storyline is that they actually made this incredibly detailed, well fleshed out universe with likable characters you can care about... and then used only a tiny fraction of that quality when crafting the storylines for the actual games. The novels are surprisingly good, is what I'm trying to say.

Anyway, you shouldn't have a problem with ODST's storyline, it takes place immediately after Regret's ship jumps to slipspace in Halo 2, and you find dead Elites here and there as an indicator of the Covenant Civil War; other than that it's not directly related to the events of the games at all.

The first Halo has aged beautifully, it won't be tough to play. Go through it on easy, and it'll be worth it.

Sounds like you know a lot about the Halo storyline because I didn't understand that last sentence at all. I want to get into the storyline. Should I start with the books or just start buy playing through Halo: CE?

You should play Halo: CE anyway, as it's an excellent game. I can also recommend all of the novels in general, though The Fall of Reach and Ghosts of Onyx are definitely a step above the others.

So basically it's Halo novels, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo novels, Halo 2 (halfway), ODST, Halo 2 (2nd half), Halo 3?

This article 1up did a while back is probably the most simple and comprehensive summary of Halo fiction out there. WTFiction.

@TheMustacheHero:
Yeah, that's the gist of it. Just to make it even more confusing, Halo Wars takes place between two of the novels, I think , and it looks like Halo: Reach is gonna have the same setting as one of the novels.

Nah, Halo Wars is a pretty self-contained story. Although of course all the Halo games technically take place between novels, because Contact Harvest details the start of the war, and Ghosts of Onyx takes place pretty much concurrently with Halo 3.
