This sounds annoying (and it is) but you have to open the gif in a separate tab (i.e. right click and choose "open in new tab"), then click and drag that picture in the new tab back to the reply field thing in this tab.
I can simply copy/paste gifs and it works. Try not using crtl+v but right-click/paste instead.
