a filling between two outsider layers (open on the sides) is a sandwhich. Filling can be a solid layer of substance or many different layers of substances. The top/bottom layer should be composed of the same material or serve the same purpose. A wrap is not a sandwhich. A wrap is subset of food in the same vein that a sandwhich is. There is NO reason that a hamburger is not a sandwhich as long as the label of hamburger is not pertaining to the actual peice of meat, in which case that is another name for ground beef. A better question is whether or not a hotdog (complete package) is a sandwhich or not. In practice I think it can be. Technically it isn't, if not for the reason that a hotdog bun isn't supposed to be disconnected between the two halfs. But when I think about it, a hotdog is more closely to a taco and all its supspecies. You can have burritos which are wraps, but also tacos. So tacos must be a subset of food in the same way that sandwhices are. burritos are sub species of tacos in the same way that wraps are subspecies of sandwiches. So that means that all wraps are sandwhiches, and all hotdogs are from the taco family. But wouldn't that then mean that the hotdogs are actually in the taco family. Why is taco a subset of food as the sandwich is? Is it because that have the mexican connotations that are so devisive that it would make it it's own sub section of food? What if every food that is a filling contained within an edible outter layer is a sandwhich? This is the only way that every thing works. So is a pie a sandwich? Is pizza an open face sandwich? are some pies open face sandwich? Or is the outside layer of the sandwich supposed to allow for the food construct to be able to be held and eaten? I think this is the defining characteristic. Sure you "could" pick up a piece of pie and eat it, but it is not supposed to be consumed in that fashion. So back to pizza, is the outside layer of pizza as such as to allow it to be picked up. Or is that layer the way it is so that it could act as a base? Yes I think so.

Wraps, tacos, hotdogs, hamburgers, burritos, and all things of this matter belong to the sandwhich family of foods.

It is the only way things can be.

A sandwich is defined as two pieces of bread, traditionally holding meat in between. By this definition, a hamburger is a sandwich.

A hotdog on a bun IS a sandwich and I guess so are more borderline things that are stealthily members of the sandwhich family like a pig in a blanket, meat kolache, hot pocket, taco, pot pie, gyro, or corndog. But some might consider a corndog to be more of a breaded fitter or croquette like a chicken nugget, chicken strip, fried chicken, or a fishstick.

A hotdog with no bun, by itself is just a crappy sauage.

Hamburgers are by definition sandwiches but that has been said a year ago so I'll leave it at that.

Couldn't it be said that hamburgers contain blood, and sandwiches do not?

Of course this is skipping the technicalities of the whole meat processing situation, but play along.

I think sandwiches might be a subset of burgers. Insanity you say? Well in light of the Double Down (?) Burger that I have heard about, if you can consider that a burger that would mean burgers are defined by placing some sort of food between any other two common food items. Thus, a sandwich could be just of the bread variety.

Don't mind me I'm just thinking out loud.

While  "sandwich" could be a generic term to represent any bread-filling-bread combination, to me an individual hamburger is more correctly called a hamburger, and not a sandwich, but it is a type of sandwich. The major difference in defining different sandwich types is the type of bread used.

For example, two slices of normal bread with chicken in between is commonly knows as a chicken sandwich.

A bread roll with chicken in between is not a chicken sandwich, but a  chicken roll.

A long bun with a sausage is not a sausage sandwich, but a hot-dog.

A bagel with cream-cheese is not a cream-cheese sandwich, but a cream cheese bagel.

So a patty of ground beef in a hamburger bun is not a ground beef sandwich, but a hamburger.

But collectively, they are all types of sandwiches.

Therefore, Hamburgers are not sandwiches, only a type of sandwich.

A hamburger fits the literal definition of a sandwich (2 or more slices of bread with a filling in between), but I don't consider it a sandwich. This is primarily based on its extreme popularity, which has earned a separate classification based on its typical containment of a patty (meat or vegetable) rather than something else (meat in sliced form, peanut butter and jelly, and so on).

It's hard to say....two pieces of bread, a piece of meat (not sliced, but still a piece of meat). Sounds like a sandwich to me.

It's also awesome, sandwich or not.
