I agree that "sandwich" is an umbrella term for many much things, one of those things is a hamburger. Although I accept it as a sandwich, not many do, case and point: Ace of Sandwiches does not sell burgers. As soon as they start selling them, I will consider it being known by the masses as a sandwich.

A hamburger is a piece of beef "sandwiched" between two pieces of a bun.  How could you not think it's a sandwich

The question isn't is a hamburger a sandwich? But rather is a sandwich a hamburger?

it depends how you classify a hamburger. If a hamburger is just the meat then  a hamburger is not a sandwich. But if you call a hamburger the meat between buns with other stuff too then I believe my friend you have a sandwich

I would have to say that it is a type of sandwich but humberburgers are also so unique that they should be considered as a completely different entity in some situations. Like at the burger king you can get a burger but that burger is so much of a mass produced burger that it should not be considered a sandwich.

It is not whether hamburgers are sandwiches, but whether sandwiches are hamburgers.

If sandwiches never existed then no one would have thought up hamburgers. The first known reference to sandwiches is attributed to Hillel the elder . Long before ronald mcdonald strode onto the scene

It's not a sandwich, it's like calling pizza a sort of pie. Hamburgers are their own thing, not part of any other food group same with hot dogs. It just doesn't feel right to demote these fine dishes into the world of sandwiches (which may be a fine world, but burgers need freedom, they will never become annexed by the sandwich empire)

Isn't the hamburger the meat between the buns, i.e. the minced beef patted into a round shape - a recipe/technique invented in Hamburg, Germany? So even if it wasn't between two pieces of bread it would still be a hamburger,

so I went to my trusty dictionary and looked both up

sandwich
–noun
1. two or more slices of bread or the like with a layer of meat, fish, cheese, etc., between each pair.

hamburger
–noun
1. a sandwich consisting of a cooked patty of ground or chopped beef, usually in a roll or bun, variously garnished.

There you have it folks, it is ocicial. A hamburger is classified as a sandwich and we know this is true because the people who write these dictionaries are smart. But that said I personally don't beleive that the hambuger should have to share a page with the sandwich. they both deserve their own page

The hamburger is a descendant of it's mother, the sandwich. I'm not sure who's the father though.

I think i speak for the majority when i say that the hamburger is not a sandwich, it is a beast of its own.

I work in a bagel shop, is a bagel sliced in half with bacon placed between the two halves a bacon sandwich? I would say yes, equally I would say if a bagel can be a sandwich then so too can a hamburger.

A sandwich doesn't necessary mean it must be a thin slice of  *insert disgusting bologna type here*.  Anything that has 2 slices of bread/buns is a damn sandwich, we might as well call it a hamburgwich.

If we generalise, the bun is bread. The burger is a filling.
Two pieces of bread with a filling is sandwich.
Thus, I vote hamburger is a type of sandwich.

Hamburgers are hamburgers, they're  on a bun, and suffer no relation to a sandwich, which is on two thin slices of bread

But what if you take a hamburger, and take out the meat and put it between two sandwich breads, would that change the meat''s status to a sandwich?

If you have to choose between the 2, you wouldn't ask for a sandwich when you want a hamburger so i say no

It is a sandwich. Sandwiches are not necessarily cold. Using Subway to define what a sandwich is seems bunk in my book. Thus, hamburgers are sandwiches.

Or an evolution.

Of greasiness.

I conlude -  a hamburger is indeed a sandwich.

CaLe said:
"Well.. when I think of a sandwich I think of something that is cold. Hamburgers are supposed to be warm! Not cold darn it!
"

You don't consider a toasted sandwich a sandwich?

Anything that involves two slices of bread is a sandwich in my book, Jeff. Oh, but then you'd argue that hotdog buns don't constitute slices of bread...
