Han was found as an orphan by a smuggler ship captain and put to work for a room and food aboard his ship. When the captain discovered Han's natural piloting talent, he put him to work fixing and racing speeder bikes and swoops. By betting on the races that Solo rode in, the captain was able to make a decent amount of money. He was, however, extremely abusive of Han, which later lead Han to rebel and abandon the smuggler's ship, but not without getting into a fight with the captain, and being aided in his escape by the ship's Wookiee cook, who died in during the escape.
So Han went around the galaxy picking up odd pilotting jobs where he could find them, both legitimate and illegal, and made quite a few connections among the galaxies smugglers and crime syndicates, all the while trying to save up enough money to apply and attend the Imperial Flight Academy, and become a pilot for the Empire. Eventually, he did in fact make it to the academy, but was thrown out of the academy when he attacked a superior officer who was attacking a young Wookiee slave named Chewbacca. Chewbacca excaped and quickly pledged a life debt to the then exaperated Solo, who wanted nothing more than to be left alone after being expelled from the Academy.
Chewie and Han quickly got into making smuggling runs for various organizations, including the Hutts and the Rebel Alliance in its beginning days. Han actually fell in love with one of the first leaders of the Rebel Alliance, Bria Tharen, who died during the mission to transmit the plans for the first Death Star to the Tantive IV, Princess Leia Organa's ship, though her and Han had each went their seperate ways shortly before following getting swindled out of their earnings and the earnings of a group of other smugglers in a big run for the Rebels.
Han even went on to win the Millenium Falcon from the gambler and con-man, Lando Callrission in a card tournament on Cloud City. He and Chewbacca went on to make many additions and moditifcations to the ship, making it one of the fastest, most powerful, and tempermental ships in existance.
Han later took a job from the Jedi Knight, Obi Wan Kenobi transporing him and a few other passengers, including Luke Skywalker, to the planet Alderaan during the events of A New Hope. He ended up becoming a war hero and general in the Rebel Alliance following the rescue of the then Rebel leader, Leia Organa, who he would go on to marry, and the destruction of the first Death Star.
Han and Leia had three children, the twins Jacen and Jaina, and Anakin, all of whom went on to become Jedi Knights. Anakin, however, would die during a Jedi mission in the Yuuzhan Vong war and Jacen would be killed by his sister Jaina after turning to the Dark Side and becomeing the Sith Darth Caedus. Han and Leia adopted Jacen's daughter, Allana, after his death. His Wookiee co-pilot, Chewbacca, was also killed during the outset of the Yuuzhan vong war.
