The past few years have seen a swell in the amount of franchises looking to get back to their roots. Games such as Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode One and Street Fighter 4 have tried to return their respective franchises to their roots with varying degrees of success. Konami has decided to take a different approach with Hard Corps: Uprising by evolving the Contra formula in some interesting ways while still remaining true to what made the series great in the first place. Most people would agree that bad checkpoints in a Contra style game is unforgivable. It is. What's even worse is when the developers seem to realize they made a big mistake, and take the easy way out. Arc System Works took the easy way out. Hard Corps Uprising is Contra. You'll run and jump through levels absolutely swarming with bad guys, fight giant bosses, and use a spread gun. This totally looks surprising, right? Well, its not. At all.Take some anime, throw in some Contra, and you'd think that the combination would totally be bad ass, right? WRONG. I love Contra. I use to play Contra III for hours with friends and even though I would get my ass handed to me I still came back each time. Hard Corps: Uprising is Contra. Somethings, such as the artwork and leveling up, have changed or are new to the Contra series, but the basics are all there. This game acts as a prequel to Contra: Hard Corps.
