In hard time, you start by making your own character from a list of options. After you have made your character, you choose from a list of crimes which will give you more time in jail, the worst the crime is.
As the start the game, It will put you randomly in any of the 4 cell blocks. (North, West, South or East) and then you live out your life in prision. They are:
A dining area
A exercise yard
A main hall
A workshop
A library
The cell blocks
A prision life simulator where you can make your own inmate and then do your time in Southtown Correctional Facility.

Repuation
In the game there is a repuation level, when you start; the tougher the crime that you chose, the higher your repuation. You can also gain repuation by not doing what the guards say. But you can lose repuation if you come back innocent after doing something bad. Then your cell mates become suspicious and then you lose repuation.Free roam aspect
In the game, you can do whatever you want. for example: If the guards say you have to be in your cell, you don't have too. But the guards will beat you down.
Be respected as you try and survive in Southtown Correctional Facility.
