In the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe portrays Harry Potter. He is voiced by different actors in the video games.
Pettigrew revealed the location of the Potters to Lord Voldemort, betraying his friends. On October 31, 1981, Voldemort invaded the Potter residence. James was wandless when he broke through the door, and killed him with minimum effort. When he went to the second floor where Lily and Harry were, he gave Lily a chance to live. This was because Severus Snape begged Voldemort to let his true love, Lily, live. She, in her bravery and love, refused to cast aside and let her son die. Voldemort killed Lily and then cast the Killing Curse on Harry. However, Harry did not die but the curse rebounded. This was because Lily's loving sacrifice cast a special type of protection on Harry that protected him from Voldemort. Voldemort lost his physical form and his power (he would have died if he didn't make Horcruxes) and went into hiding for the next 10 years. The only mark that Harry bore from this event was his infamous lightning-shaped scar on his forehead.
Harry's house was partially blown apart and Harry was covered and surrounded by debris. Dumbledore ordered Hagrid to retrieve Harry and bring him to Privet Drive. Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall were waiting for him and the child at the street where Harry's only relatives, the Dursleys, lived. Hagrid arrived by means of motorcycle, actually the motorcycle that belonged to Sirius Black. Dumbledore, McGonagall and Hagrid all said their farewells passionately but knew this would not be the last time they would see each other. Harry had ten more years until he would find out he was a Wizard...
Harry had a benefit of living at his home, however. He was under the protection of a special spell that Dumbledore cast that made their house invisible and protected from Voldemort and Dark Forces. In addition, he was under the constant surveillance of Arabella Figg, a Squib (Wizard-born person with no magical traits) who lived next door to the Dursleys and would relay information to the Order of the Phoenix. Throughout these years, Harry attended a Muggle school and had no friends. Other children were intimidated by Dudley and his ragtag gang, and listened to him when he told them to not befriend Harry.
On the days before his eleventh birthday, Harry started receiving letters from owls that were from "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry". Vernon and Petunia summarily destroyed every letter they received and promised Harry that he would not see them. One day, however, a flurry of letters arrived from every orifice of the house, trying to allow Harry to read at least one. He caught one and tried to read it but Vernon said they were moving far away from where they were to get away from the mail. They went to an island house in the middle of a thunderstorm. Harry was celebrating his eleventh birthday alone when a thunderous knocking occurred at the door, sending it down. None other than Hagrid appeared, wishing Harry "Happy Birthday" with a cake and intimidating the Dursleys with his massive size. Here Hagrid revealed to him all the secrets he was hidden from: the fact that he was a Wizard, his parents died on far more noble causes and he would be a student at Hogwarts in the next year. Harry was refulgent with joy and happiness: this was his first, true "Happy Birthday" in ten years.
The Beginning Of A Boy Wizard
Hagrid took Harry to Diagon Alley, the premier Wizarding marketplace filled with stores that filled one's every need. They went to Gringotts, the safest Wizarding bank in existence, and Harry discovered that he had a large inheritance in gold left from his parents. At the bank, Harry also was curiously suspicious when Hagrid went to Vault 713 to retrieve a stone that Dumbledore asked him to get. Later that day, the vault would have an attempted robbery, only to find no stone present.
In addition, Harry was given Hedwig as a gift from Hagrid. Hedwig was a Snowy Owl and Harry's pet for his school years at Hogwarts. As well, Harry went to Ollivander's Wand Shop to get a wand that was eleven inches long, made of holly and contained a phoenix feather core, actually a feather from Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes. Also, this wand happened to be the exact same model that Voldemort used, including when he killed his parents.
Harry then boarded The Hogwarts Express through Platform Nine and Three Quarters and met his soon-to-be lifelong friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Ron was shocked to find out that he was befriending one of the most famous Wizards of all time, although Hermione was indifferent because of her Muggle-born status and the fact that she did not grow up in a Wizarding household. Once at the school, Harry was sorted into the Gryffindor House but not before almost being put into Slytherin. The Sorting Hat took into consideration Harry's preference and put him in the house of Godric Gryffindor.
Harry accidentally showed off one of his finest skills not long after. During their first flying lesson on brooms, Harry stood up to Draco Malfoy, the class bully, and flew off on his broom to retrieve one of Neville Longbottom's possesions. He flew with great control and was able to catch objects around him with ease. Professor McGonagall took notice and, instead of expelling him, he gave him the position of Seeker on the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Harry became the youngest Seeker in a century and also found out that his father, James, was a Seeker when he was a student at Hogwarts as well. Harry received a top of the line broom, Nimbus 2000, and experienced great success on the team. In one game, however, Harry, Ron and Hermione grew suspicious of Severus Snape. Harry's broom, during the middle of the game, started to falter and lose altitude quickly. Hermione looked at Snape and saw him performing some incantation at the broom. They thought he was responsible but it turned out to be Professor Quirrell, the quirky Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher, who was guilty of the crime and Snape was trying to protect Harry with a counter-jinx.
Meanwhile, Lord Voldemort was attempting a return to form by stealing the Sorcerer's Stone. His attempt at Gringotts failed and he took physical form onto Professor Quirrel's head, or the back of his head. Quirrell would wear a large, purple turban to hide the face. Throughout the year, whenever Quirrell had his back turned to Harry, Harry would experience great pain in his scar. Coincidentally, most of these times Snape was looking at Harry simultaneously so Harry falsely believed that Snape was evil.
Dumbledore had set up many defenses to guard the Sorcerer's Stone such as Fluffy, a three-headed dog, as well as the Mirror of Erised. This mirror shows anyone who looks at it their deepest desire. Harry found this mirror earlier in the year and saw his parents by his side. Dumbledore found Harry looking at the Mirror and said that he saw him with a pair of woolen socks. He was joking at this moment because Dumbledore had actually seen something else: his whole family reunited. Anyway, the Mirror of Erised was used to protect the Sorcerer's Stone from unwanted users. Dumbledore designed it that anyone who did not intend to use the Stone could retrieve it from the Mirror. So, after traversing various obstacles such as a giant, life-size, deadly game of chess, Harry, Ron and Hermione got to a point before a large chamber, where only Harry proceeded. Here, Harry found Professor Quirrell staring at the Mirror of Erised, pondering how to retrieve the Stone. He reveals to Harry that he jinxed his broom and he has been plotting against him the whole year. He also shows the back of his head, revealing part of Voldemort, causing Harry great pain in his scar. Harry then looked at the Mirror himself and saw the image of himself pocketing the Stone, which appeared itself in his pocket. Harry then, by accident, touches Quirrell's face with his hands and starts to burn his face away. He reduces Quirrell to ash and Voldemort flees. Harry was victorious.
Dumbledore would reveal to Harry in the hospital wing that Harry used love to defeat Voldemort this time. The sacrifice Lily made when she died caused a protection to form in his body. Love has always been the force that Voldemort never used nor understood. Because of this and its inherent power, it turned out to be the greatest weapon against him. After this, Hermione, Ron and Harry developed a closer bond and affirmed the relationship that would last for the rest of their schoolyears and their lives. Harry returned to his house in Privet Drive, anticipating his return next year.
The Chamber of Secrets
Harry's second year did not carry much of the optimism his first year ended with. Harry spent the summer alone and neglected, as he received no letters from Ron or Hermione. He soon discovered that Dobby the House Elf was hiding the letters when he appeared in his room at a most inconvenient time. Dobby told Harry that he was in "great danger" and he "mustn't return to Hogwarts." Harry, being him, refused and Dobby, in order to convince him, made a cake fall onto one of the guest the Dursleys were having over. Because of this, the Dursleys locked Harry up in his room, barring the windows. Of course, Ron, Fred and George Weasley came to rescue him with their flying, magical car and escaped to The Burrow, the Weasley's residence. Dobby's attempts to block Harry from Hogwarts did not stop there. Next, he sealed the portal to Platform 9 3/4 early for Harry and Ron. They decided to take the flying car, which at first alerted a few Muggles when they saw a flying car in the sky. Their car was demolished when they landed in the Whomping Willow, a tree with an aggressive demeanor. Harry and Ron received detention for this, and Ron a broken wand due to implications from the tree.
The new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart, made matters worse. He was talentless and very pompous and took credit for things he did not accomplish. He took an interest in Harry because of his fame and repeatedly tried to boast his own credentials by teaching him. During a Dueling Club meet, Harry revealed his dueling skills as well as his ability to speak Parseltongue to the students of Hogwarts. The ability to speak Parselmouth was usually incorporated with Slytherin as well as Dark Magic. The Chamber of Secrets subsequently opened and caused further trouble. The Chamber was said to only be able to be opened by the Heir of Slytherin which many people believed was Harry.
Hermione was researching The Chamber of Secrets and its origins and correctly hypothesized that a basilisk was the creature that was roaming the school. The basilisk, a large, serpent-like creature, could kill anyone with merely a gaze into their eyes. Hermione and Penelope Clearwater, a fellow student, were paralyzed one night when they saw the Basilisk's gaze through the reflection of a mirror. Just before her incapacitation Hermione wrote down the word "pipes" on a piece of paper, which Ron and Harry discovered. They incorporated this to mean that the basilisk was roaming the castle undetected through the pipe system.
Harry learned that Ginny Weasley was the student who opened the Chamber of Secrets and wrote the passages in blood that were on the wall. She did this unknowingly because Lord Voldemort, as a ghost form of Tom Riddle, had attached himself to her through her use of his old diary. This diary was very close emotionally to Ginny and happened to be a Horcrux, a piece of Voldemort's soul encased in an object to keep him alive. A note that her "skeleton would lie in the Chamber forever" appeared in blood shortly after, and Harry was determined to find and rescue Ginny.
Harry, Ron and Gilderoy Lockhart went to the Prefect bathroom where Moaning Myrtle stayed. Myrtle was revealed to be the previous victim of the opening of the Chamber of Secrets many years ago, and she died at the sight of the basilisk. Moreover, Harry used Parseltongue to open the Chamber and had to force Lockhart to attend because of his lack of bravery. Once down in the Chamber, Gilderoy attempted to clear Harry and Ron's memories but, using Ron's wand, erased his own permanently. The blast caused rocks to fall, separating Ron and Lockhart from Harry. Harry continued, where he found Ginny. Ginny was unconscious and a figure of Tom Riddle appeared. At the time, Harry was unaware that Tom Riddle was a euphemism for Lord Voldemort and actually asked for his assistance. Tom calmly refused and revealed himself to be the true enemy. He sent the basilisk on Harry when Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix, arrived, giving him the Sorting Hat. Out of the Sorting Hat he pulled the sword of Gryffindor. The snake was blinded and he finally killed it with a stab through the mouth. Harry then took one of its fangs and used the basilisk venom encased to destroy the diary. Tom Riddle tried to intervene but was blown apart in his spiritual self. Harry had just unwillingly destroyed Voldemort's Horcrux, the first person to do so.
Ginny, Ron, Lockhart, and Harry returned to the proper castle grounds and were received as heroes, all except Gilderoy of course. Lockhart was sacked as a teacher and Ginny was acquitted of any wrongdoing. Dumbledore and Harry spoke in his office when Lucius Malfoy barged in. Here, it was revealed that Lucius slipped the diary into Ginny's booksack for the year when at Diagon Alley, and tried to help the return of the Dark Lord. Dobby was also the Malfoys' elf, but he became free when Harry slipped him a sock, a form of emancipation for elves, to Dobby covertly. Lucius was fired from his position as school governor and the rest of the petrified people were cured. In the end, Harry returned back to the Muggle world, again awaiting his return.
The Escape of Sirius Black and Family Revealed
Harry spent his next summer in not much more favorable circumstances than the last. Uncle Vernon's sister, Aunt Marge, visited the Dursleys for a week. Harry knew from previous experience that she was a vile woman but her visit this time was even worse. She praised the lie Harry told her that, at the school he goes to, they beat their children frequently. She also called his father a drunk and said his family has bad blood. She even called his mother a "bitch." This caused Harry to seethe with anger and he caused her to rapidly expand, like a balloon, sending her out of the house and into the sky. Harry then escaped the residence where he saw a black dog that looked vicious. His encounter was interrupted by the Knight Bus visit, a form of transportation for the stranded witch or wizard. The bus moved at breakneck speeds and maneuvered impossible turns through its magical construction. Harry here learned of the escape of a "notorious mass-murderer" Sirius Black. The bus's attendant, Stan Shunpike, told Harry that Black killed 12 Muggles with one curse and was a big supporter of " You Know Who." He had been locked up for 12 years, the exact amount of time since Harry's parents' death. Harry arrived at the Leaky Cauldron and was met by Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic himself. He said that Aunt Marge had her memory erased and everything is fine. He would not be expelled and there was nothing to worry about. He also warned Harry to be careful in this environment because of Black's escape. Harry asked why he should be concerned and Fudge, fearing he said too much, merely said "No reason".
Hermione and Ron arrived shortly later. They all left for King's Cross and boarded the Hogwarts Express. On this train ride, the train suddenly stopped and a cold feeling started to emanate throughout the cabin. Suddenly, Dementors appeared on the train and opened the door to Harry's cabin. Dementors are the guards to Azkaban, the high security Wizarding prison, and they are dressed in black cloaks and suck the happiness out of their victims. If one experiences the "Dementor's kiss," they lose their soul and are experience a fate worse than death. Anyway, the Dementor started to suck the happiness from Harry's body but Remus Lupin intervened (he was asleep in the same cabin), casting the Patronus Charm. Harry heard a high-pitched scream of a woman and fainted. He woke up later and Lupin told him exactly what the creature was and gave him chocolate to aid his recovery. No one else fainted on the train and, because of this reason, Harry felt embarrassed. They all went to the Great Hall for the opening feast when Dumbledore gave his speech. He announced that Hagrid would be the teacher for the Care For Magical Creatures course and Lupin would be the new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher. He also warned everyone to be cautious because of Black's escape and he stationed Dementors around every exit to Hogwarts for safety.
Harry and Ron started classes the next day, with Professor Trelawney as the Divination Professor for one of the first courses. They met this odd, very eccentric woman with large glasses and were immediately taken aback. She has everyone read tea leaves and finds "The Grim" in Harry's cup, causing her to physically react in an overdone fashion. She explained that "The Grim" is a sign of grave danger. "The Grim" is a black dog, eerily similar to the one Harry saw at Privet Drive. The next class the students attended was Care of Magical Creatures with Hagrid. Here, Harry met Buckbeak, a Hippogriff, which is a cross between an eagle and a horse. Harry had to appropriately present himself to Buckbeak because "hippogriffs are proud creatures," according to Hagrid. Then, Harry rode the creature as it soared off and toured the Hogwarts grounds. Feeling a bit of jealousy from his enemy's experience, Draco Malfoy approached Buckbeak when he returned and affronted it rudely. The hippogriff landed a clean, minor gash on his arm but, being Malfoy, he overreacted and makes out as he is dying. Draco's father, Lucius, would later accuse the creature of great harm and convinced the council to sentence Buckbeak to death, much to Hagrid's dismay. Later, in the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, Professor Lupin taught his students the spell "Riddikulus," the spell to ward off a boggart, or a creature that takes form of someone's worst fears. Harry approached the cabinet with the creature inside and it took the form of a Dementor, which Lupin quickly warded off, although not before showing his own boggart, a full moon.
Harry suffered his Aunt and Uncle's cruelty later in the year because they did not sign his permission form to Hogsmeade Village. A rite of passage for pretty much all third year students, the trip to Hogsmeade is usually for socialization and recreation; very few students do not have their permission form signed. Fred and George Weasley, sensing Harry's disappointment, gave him the Marauder's Map, a magical map that shows the exact location of anyone at any time in Hogwarts. A map used for mischievous purposes, "Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs" are the self-proclaimed creators. Harry used this map to find a sneak passage into Hogsmeade, where he met up with Ron and Hermione. He passed by the Three Broomsticks pub where he saw Madam Rosmerta, its proprietor, Cornelius Fudge, Professor McGonagall and Hagrid in a discussion about Sirius Black when he heard the word "Harry Potter". Curious to know more, Harry followed them into a private room. Here, he learned that Sirius Black betrayed his own parents to Lord Voldemort and killed their best friend, Peter Pettigrew, along with 12 other Muggles, with one spell. He also found out that Sirius Black is, to this day, his godfather. Harry found these news horrible and vowed to kill him.
During a Quidditch game, Harry fell due to a mid-flight run-in with Dementors and Dumbledore, being the great wizard he is, used the spell "Arresto Momentum" to save him from falling to his death. Unfortunately, Harry's broomstick flew into the Whomping Willow and became nothing more than broken wood. However, weeks later, Harry received an anonymous package that contains a Firebolt, the top-of-the-line Quidditch broomstick. Meanwhile, Harry started learning proper defense against Dementors through Lupin's private lessons. He learned the spell, "Expecto Patronum," which is made by procuring a very powerful memory that is happy enough to ward off the soulless Dementors. It took a few tries but he eventually made a very successful Patronus charm that Lupin was proud of.
Harry looked at the Marauder's Map one night and sees "Peter Pettigrew" walking in circles. He investigated, knowing this man to be dead, but found no person when standing at the exact spot he is. However, Lupin intercepted him and told him that the map he used could be a great tool to Sirius Black. Harry told him who he saw and Lupin said that was "impossible". Later, the trio then tried to stop Buckbeak's scheduled execution but failed and believed they see Buckbeak being executed from a far distance away. Scabbers, Ron's rat, then disappeared, going to the Shrieking Shack. Once there, the black dog that appeared before grabbed Ron by the leg with Scabbers and dragged him into the shack. They discovered that the black dog is actually Sirius Black himself in Animagus form. Lupin arrived and actually assisted Black. He explained that Sirius was innocent because it was Peter Pettigrew that survived. He was the true traitor to Harry's parents and he killed those Muggles in order to frame Sirius for the crime. He only left a finger from his death and he had
disappeared for 12 years, the same lifespan as Scabbers. They transformed Scabbers and found out in fact that it is Pettigrew. Instead of killing the pathetic-looking, squirmy man however, Harry decided to spare his life, choosing to bring him to the castle to face the Dementors. This plan was foiled, however, when Lupin failed to take his Wolfsbane potion and suffered the consequences outside because he was, in fact, a werewolf. He transformed and Pettigrew fled. Harry, Ron and Hermione escaped from the werewolf with the help of a mysterious sound and Harry went by himself to find Sirius. Sirius was lying by a lake, wounded from Lupin's attacks and the Dementors started to converge on him. Harry tried to cast a powerful Patronus charm but there he had no such luck. However, a brilliant, radiating Patronus in the form of a stag appeared across the lake and it vanquished all the Dementors. He believed this Patronus was formed by his dad, even despite his obvious death. Harry and Sirius fainted but their lives were saved.
Harry woke up in the hospital wing not long later and learned from Hermione that Sirius Black had been apprehended and would receive the Dementor's Kiss soon. Dumbledore approached the three and told them that steps could be taken, directly referring to Hermione, that would save "more than one innocent life." Hermione then used her Time-Turner, a device that can rewind time to a certain point, to go about 3 hours into the past. (Hermione had this magical object because she had a highly packed schedule and she used a Time-Turner to go back in time each day to accomplish two classes at once, much to Harry and Ron's befuddlement). Harry and Hermione realized that they could save the innocent life of Buckbeak as well as Sirius through this process. They returned to Hagrid's hut and made sure that the Minister of Magic saw Buckbeak before talking to Hagrid and then they furtively brought Buckbeak to the Forbidden Forest. They then waited for a time by the Whomping Willow, anticipating their own return with Sirius, Lupin, Snape and Pettigrew from the Shrieking Shack. Once they returned, Hermione saved Harry's life (in his other self) by distracting Lupin's werewolf form and driving him away. Then, Harry returned to the lake where he thought he saw his dad and waited for him to appear. When his own life and Sirius's were in critical danger he gave up that notion and performed the Patronus himself. Performing a Patronus charm of massive and unequivocal size, Harry just executed one of the most difficult spells at one of the highest intensities it has ever seen, still only at the age of thirteen.
Harry and Hermione then used Buckbeak to fly to the tower where Sirius was being held. They freed him and, before leaving, he had some grateful, passionate words to both. He told Hermione that she was truly one of the brightest witches of her age and promised Harry that he would be a good godfather to him, instead of the neglect he showed by being locked up in Azkaban for almost all of Harry's life. He left with Buckbeak and Harry met his true family member, more than anyone he knew to this point. By the end, two innocent lives were saved by the decisions they made and Harry met the father figure he never had.
The Triwizard Tournament and The Dark Lord's Return
Harry started the year by attending the Quidditch World Cup with the Weasley familiy, Hermione and the Diggorys, comprising of Amos Diggory, the father, and Cedric Diggory, the dashing male from Hufflepuff. They witnessed the exciting game with an appearance by Viktor Krum, the famous Quidditch player from Durmstrang Academy. Later that night, Death Eaters invaded the camps surrounding the game and set fire to the tents and caused chaos. The Dark Mark, Voldemort's sign, appeared in the sky and Harry saw a strange person cast it, though he was not sure who it was.
Harry also experienced a strange, life-like dream in which Pettigrew, Barty Crouch Jr., and Lord Voldemort were talking in a room about his return. A Muggle, Frank Bryce, believed them to be mischievous kids but was surprised to find out otherwise. Voldemort casted a flash of blinding green light at him, killing him instantly. This dream was actually real and Harry was experiencing a side-effect of the passage between his and Voldemort's mind.
Upon Harry's arrival at Hogwarts, Dumbledore announced the special event the school was hosting that year: The Triwizard Tournament. In this tournament, three schools compete against each other in three different, challenging tasks. A representative from each school would be chosen through The Goblet of Fire. A student simply had to write his/her name down on a piece of parchment and put it in the cup. Because of its challenge, the tournament was limited to students seventeen years or older. The students from the other two schools, the ladies from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and the men from Durmstrang Institute, arrived and greeted the students of Hogwarts in style. The Goblet of Fire then chose its three candidates: Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts, Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, and Viktor Krum from Durmstrang. However, a fourth name was spat from the Goblet: Harry Potter. The school greeted him with shock and ridicule, and he was quickly shuffled into the Trophy Room where the teachers and Triwizard council discussed the terms. Harry did not submit his name and he asked no one else too. However, the rules for the competition are strict and the Goblet cannot be doubted, so he was declared a Triwizard champion.
Ron did not take these news well at all. He thought that Harry was lying and that he truly did submit his name into the Tournament. He was, once again, living in the shadow of his friend, the legendary Harry Potter. The Daily Prophect journalist Rita Skeeter also published outright lies about Harry and tried to maim any relationships he still had. On top of all this, Harry started to develop a crush on Ravenclaw student Cho Chang. Ron would communicate through Hermione as the only ways of "speaking" to Harry, and Harry grew very sick and tired of the strain on their relationship. Hermione, on the other hand, believed Harry from the beginning and assisted him on his trials ahead.
The new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher, " Mad-Eye Moody," proved to be an eccentric, dangerous, but helpful mentor to Harry during the Tournament. He always protected Harry throughout the year and made sure that he was on track for the tournament challenges ahead. He, along with Hermione, taught Harry the Summoning Charm, which would prove useful later on. Hagrid showed Harry that the first task was " dragons," with a particularly ruthless Hungarian Horntail specimen. Harry tipped off Cedric that dragons were the first task and he would compensate for Harry's generosity later. Finally, the first task begun. Each contestant was assigned with receiving a Golden Egg from their assigned dragon. Harry got the creature he dreaded: the Hungarian Horntail. Viktor, Fleur, and Cedric successfully completed their tasks and only Harry remained. He went into the stadium and was attacked by the dragon. Using the Summoning Charm he learned earlier, he retrieved his broomstick to evade the dragon through flying, one of his true talents. The dragon gave chase to the castle, far from the stadium, and after much struggle, Harry lost it and went back to the stadium to retrieve the Golden Egg. The Egg was said to have the clue to assist the Champion on the next task, and when Harry opened it, a deafening, screeching sound was emitted. However, by the end of the task, Ron had "forgiven" Harry, or vice-versa, and they were natural buddies again.
The Yule Ball was the next occurrence of the year. It was, to many boy students' dismay, a dance. Students were taught to dance and the boys were advised to pick a date quickly before "they are all gone." Ron was interested in Hermione, showing the signs of maturity, and asked her, in a rude fashion, to dance. However, it was too late as she had already been chosen by Viktor Krum, the current heartthrob of Hogwarts. Harry wanted to go with Cho Chang and nervously asked her but he was also too late; she was going with the other Hogwarts champion, Cedric Diggory. She was apologetic but he and Ron went with the Patil sisters, the only options left, basically. Harry and Ron had a dreadful time but Hermione was never better, until Ron jealously accused her with "consorting with the enemy." There would be turmoil between Ron and Hermione for weeks to come because of this.
The next task was approaching but Harry still had not cracked the code on the Golden Egg. With a tip from Cedric, he went to the Prefect bathroom and listened to the Egg underneath the water. It was emitting a angelic song that was from the Merpeople in Black Lake. The task would be for the Champions to retrieve something that matters to them dearly from the lake. Harry did not know how to breathe underwater for an hour but thanks to Neville (or Dobby), Harry used gillyweed, an herb that gives its user an hour duration of fish-like traits, such as gills and webbed footing. He found his possession, Ron, at the bottom of the lake first but waited for the other people arrive. When Fleur did not appear because she had been injured, Harry took her possession, her sister, and brought both her and Ron up to shore. Although he came in last place in raw time, because of his courage and integrity of going beyond the call of duty, he was awarded second place by the judges. Now him and Cedric were tied for first.
The third and final task involved traversing a gigantic, psychologically-stressing hedge maze to find the Triwizard Cup. Dumbledore warned the contestants that "people change" in this maze, and Mad-Eye gave Harry a hint as to where to go next. Someone cast the Imperius curse on Viktor, as he became possessed in the maze and attacked Fleur. Both of them were disqualified or forfeited. Harry and Cedric touched the Cup at the same time, showing bravery and great sportsmanship. However, the Cup was a Port Key and teleported them both to the graveyard of Little Hangleton, the one Harry saw in his dreams. Here, he saw Peter Pettigrew emerge with a small, weakened man who happened to be Lord Voldemort. Voldemort ordered Pettigrew to kill Cedric, which he summarily did, and bind up Harry.
Harry was bound to the gravestone of Tom Riddle Sr., Voldemort's father, when he saw the next events. Pettigrew dropped Voldemort into a large cauldron of bubbling water and added a bone from the father's grave, some blood from Harry's arm, and even Pettigrew's own hand into the mixture which spawned Voldemort. Voldemort was reborn and called all the Death Eaters to join him through Pettigrew's Dark Mark. He was disappointed with nearly all of them, especially Lucius Malfoy. He believed that they abandoned him from his downfall, and now he would make sure no Wizard ever doubted his ability again. He began a duel with Harry, wanting to see the "light vanish from his eyes." However, a strange effect happened that night. Both Harry and Voldemort had the same wand and refused to destroy each other. The two spells they cast, "Avada Kedavra" for Voldemort and "Expelliarmus" for Harry, collided simultaneously and produced the effect called, "Priori Incantatem." This caused ghost versions of the people Voldemort killed with his wand to appear, including the recently killed Cedric as well as Harry's parents. They told him that they made the Triwizard Cup back into a Port Key and that it would return him to Hogwarts. Cedric's apparition also requested Harry to bring his body back for his father. Harry ran to the Cedric's body, summoned the Cup, and returned back to Hogwarts, not before hearing Voldemort's cry of fury.
Harry appeared right where he started: the entrance to the maze. The audience applauded his return and victory, although the mood quickly turned solemn when a death was revealed. He told Dumbledore, "He's back," and he believed him. Harry was also sobbing over Cedric's body when Mad-Eye Moody escorted him from the premises and took him to his office. Sadly, Cedric's father, Amos, was there and wept in grief over the dead body of his son. At Mad-Eye's office, Harry started realizing that the professor was behaving odd. He started asking Harry about the Dark Lord's return and how it felt at the graveyard. Knowing that he did not reveal to anyone where he was, he realized that Mad-Eye knew too much. Here, he revealed that he was the puppeteer behind many of the year's events: he submitted Harry's name to the Goblet of Fire under a fourth school, he told Neville to get Gillyweed, he cursed Krum in the maze, and he turned the Cup into a Port Key to that faithful spot. Just before he went any further, Dumbledore, along with Snape and McGonagall, barged into the room, disarmed Mad-Eye and gave him Veritaserum, a truth-telling potion. He revealed that the real Mad-Eye was there in
a magical trunk, beaten and nearly bald. The imposter turned out to be Barty Crouch Jr., a Death Eater convicted of torturing Neville Longbottom's parents as well as being the son of the recently deceased Barty Crouch Sr., someone he murdered himself. He had been using Polyjuice potion throughout the year, explaining the missing items from Snape's potion supply. The MInister of Magic would later sentence Barty Crouch Jr. to a fate worse than death: the Dementor's kiss.
Harry's fourth year was very stressful on many levels. He dealt with rapid maturity, dealing with love and heartbreak, and was a Triwizard Champion of all things. On top of all this, he witnessed firsthand the resurrection of Lord Voldemort, an event the Ministry of Magic would deny for the next year, calling Harry and Dumbledore unstable and unaware. This was the beginning of Harry's ultimate, eventual showdown with the Dark Lord, and next year would have even more surprises in store for Harry and his friends.
The Order of the Phoenix
Harry's fifth year was one filled with close calls. He had multiple near-death experiences and many others did as well. It started with him and his cousin, Dudley, at Privet Drive. Dudley was ridiculing him for his dreams in which he would yell out phrases such as "Don't kill Cedric!!" and then a cold, depressing aura was set upon them. Two dementors appeared and started to suck the soul from helpless and pathetic Dudley. Harry was forced to save them both by casting a Patronus charm. Although using magic in life-threatening situations is allowed, this action was seen as a violation of underage magic usage and Harry received a letter shortly after that he was expelled from Hogwarts. Harry took this news as devastating, and, on top of this, neither Ron nor Hermione had contacted him throughout the whole summer. Harry's luck changed, however, when members of the Order of the Phoenix, including Mad-Eye Moody, Tonks, and Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Minister of Magic's personal bodyguard, arrived at his house and escorted him out. They then flew to a location called 12 Grimmauld Place, also known as the House of Black and where Sirius grew up.
At the house, Harry grew very angry at Ron and Hermione and let out much of his anger towards them. They were apologetic although confused, and said that Dumbledore specifically "made them swear" not to tell Harry anything over the summer time. Despite his anger, Harry still was delighted to see Sirius again, his true family. Later, Arthur Weasley escorted Harry to his hearing at the Ministry of Magic for underage use of magic. He showed his curiosity and fascination for Muggle technology along the way, marveling at simple things like turnstiles. Once they arrived at the hearing, he let Harry go by himself, unable to attend himself. Here, Cornelius Fudge practically refused to listen to anything Harry said to defend himself. At this time, Fudge was firmly believing that Voldemort had indeed not returned and that Dumbledore and Potter were manufacturing lies. Alas, he was not pleased to hear that Harry said there were "dementors" because that would mean Dark Magic was involved. When Harry could not present any proof for his claim, Dumbledore arrived on perfect time, procuring a witness, Arabella Figg. Figg had actually been Harry's neighbor on Privet Drive for his whole life and she gave information to the Order during Harry's stay. She could not see the Dementors converging but she felt it and explained the feeling to the judges and jury at the hearing. With her testimony and Dumbledore's eloquence, Harry was cleared of all charges. However, Dumbledore never once made eye contact with Harry and he felt that he neglected him during this time, even if he just saved him from expulsion.
Once at Hogwarts, the students were informed that Dolores Umbridge, a particularly nasty woman from Harry's trial, would be the new Defense Against The Dark Arts Teacher. In addition to this, she was Hogwarts' high Inquisitor, inspecting various facets of the school including its faculty. She was not seen a real teacher by everyone else but as a portal for the Ministry of Magic to spy on the teachers and activities at Hogwarts, most notably Dumbledore. In addition, Harry also met Luna Lovegood, an offbeat, charming girl a year below him who could see the "Thestrals" that drew each carriage to Hogwarts. Each year being invisible, Harry could finally see these creatures because, as Luna revealed, Harry saw death firsthand the previous year when Cedric died.
Professor Umbridge had started her despicable checks on every teacher in the school. She sacked Hagrid because of his mysterious activities under Dumbledore's directions, though he escaped when presented with an eviction notice. Umbridge also fired Professor Trelawney from her job and very publicly attempted to kick her ou, doing so in front of all the students. However, as Dumbeldore appeared to point out, she has the right to fire a teacher but not banish them from the grounds. Dumbledore replaces her teaching position with an intelligent Centaur, Firenze, another "favorite" type of creature for Umbridge.
Harry had also been experiencing strange dreams for awhile, all of them including a tiled, dark hallway with a snake. One dream actually turned out to be real. Harry had witnessed in his dream, from the point of view from inside the snake eye's itself, Arthur Weasley being attacked and nearly killed. Harry quickly told McGonagall and Dumbledore his vision and they found out it was true. Arthur was saved, although it was a very close call, and Dumbledore grew concerned for Harry. He advised Snape to start teaching Harry lessons in Occlumency, the practice of closing one's mind from forces trying to penetrate it, achieved by Legilimency. During this time, they both grew even more tense at one another and when Harry saw a memory of Snape's involving him, as a teenager, being humiliated very cruelly by James Potter, they ended their teachings.
Harry, right before Christmas time and with the help of Ron and Hermione, set up a new club they called "Dumbledore's Army." In this group, the students would learn of ways to protect themselves from harm because Umbridge did not allow for any spells to be cast in her class. Here, he taught spells such as "Expelliarmus," the disarming charm, "Stupefy!," the stunning spell and the Patronus charm to its various members. The meetings took place in secrecy in the Room of Requirement, a secret room that only appears when a person truly needs it most. Neville was the example in this case. Members of the "DA" included Fred and George Weasley, Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang, Harry's crush. She and Harry kissed under the mistletoe right before Christmas break and had a short, if tumultuous relationship for a time. Her friend, Marietta Edgecombe, betrayed the DA and gave information to Umbridge. Cho defended her friend's decision and things between Harry and her "fell apart." She also believed that Hermione had a closer relationship with Harry than there truly was.
Umbridge, Cornelius Fudge, Dawlish (a guard) and Kingsley Shacklebolt, an Auror loyal to the Order of the Phoenix, affronted Dumbledore with an arrest notice. They charged him of making an army of rebels, "Dumbledore's Army". He took full responsibility for it when he truly had nothing to do with its founding. However, instead of being sent to Azkaban, he was whisked away in a marvelous display of magic by his Phoenix, Fawkes. Umbridge then became Headmistress for the school, enacting even stricter rules and regulations. Fred and George sensed that their time at Hogwarts was nearing an end, so they finished it with a bang, literally. when the students were taking their OWLS (a standardized test for fifth years), the two appeared, ruining Umbridge's order by setting off fireworks everywhere. Even the other teachers, such as Filius Flitwick, applauded the moves made by the Weasley brothers. Once they left, they would start a very successful joke shop in Diagon Alley thanks to the money Harry gave them from his Triwizard Tournament winnings.
Shortly after the duo's departure, Harry experienced another vision in his head in which Sirius Black was being tortured by Voldemort at the Department of Mysteries. He told Hermione and Ron and they felt that this image may be planted in his head as bait but Harry insisted they go because he didn't want to lose his only family left. Neville, Luna and Ginny came along with three and they headed to the Ministry of Magic. Once there, they realized that Sirius was truly not present and Voldemort did manipulate Harry's mind. Lucius Malfoy and several other Death Eaters appeared, including the vile Bellatrix Lestrange. Harry took the prophecy with his name on it and the Death Eaters demanded that they give it to them. The group, naturally, refused and a battle broke out. The ran through the Department of Mysteries (where they saw the Ministry supply of Time Turners being destroyed) and landed in the Death Chamber. Here, the Order of the Phoenix members assembled, including Mad-Eye Moody, Lupin, Tonks and Sirius Black. They showed their mastery of magic in many ways: all of them were master duelers and did an excellent job at keeping the Death Eaters at bay and safe from harm. Sirius was protecting Harry, wanting him to leave because of the danger. However, he stayed for a while longer and watched Lucius crumple at Sirius's attacks. But, out of the blue, Bellatrix, Sirius's cousin, appeared and sent a killing curse at Sirius, killing him. Harry was emotionally torn apart by this incident and Lupin had to restrain him in order for him to not pursue Bellatrix. He did break free and cornered her in the Ministry of Magic atrium.
Here, Voldemort appeared and egged on Harry in killing Bellarix. However, he knew that Harry would not and he disarmed him, ready to kill him. However, Albus Dumbledore appeared cinematically at this time via the Floo Network at the Ministry and engaged in battle with Voldemort. Here, one of the most spectacular duels ever witnessed occurred between two of the most powerful wizards of all time. Each Wizard's use of fire manipulation as well as Dumbleodre's water manipulation showed the prestigious skills each had and it was no surprise that it was a draw in the end. However, before fleeing Dumbledore took control of Harry through Legilimency and caused him to squirm on the ground as though possessed. He truly was, and Voldemort was relaying horrible images to Harry's mind as well as causing him to speak in a sinister tone to Dumbledore. As Albus pointed out though, it is the how "you are different" that matters and Harry used the power of love to to dispel Voldemort from his body. Voldemort warned Harry that their fight is not over, and that "he will lose." Just at that moment, however, Ministry of Magic officials appeared, including Cornelius Fudge, and saw Voldemort as he apparated, or disappeared. Cornelius, the long-standing advocate against rumors of the Dark Lord's return, proclaimed "He's back!!" in a fearful tone and pardoned Dumbledore of any charges. He returned him to Headmaster's position, ridding Hogwarts of Dolores Umbridge. The Return of "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" was declared, and news of the Ministry incident spread throughout the Wizarding world. Dumbledore and Harry were no longer branded as psychopaths but as heroes. Finally, the world around him sensed the problems at hand.
Harry was reeling from the tragic death of his godfather, Sirius. He was overwhelmed with grief as well as guilt, believing he could be responsible since he brought everyone there in the first place. Nonetheless, Dumbledore talked to Harry at the end of the year, apologizing for no entrusting his thoughts with him as well as the sacred prophecy made long ago. He said how Professor Trelawney foretold of a Wizard to vanquish the Dark Lord, and Snape easedropped on this conversation and relayed the info to Lord Voldemort. The subject was interpreted to be Harry, although Neville Longbottom could have been another choice. The criteria was that the parent defied Voldemort on three separate occasions and that the child was born at the end of July, which both the Potter and Longbottom families fulfilled. It was interpreted as Harry because of his half-blood status, similar to Voldemort himself. Dumbledore also revealed the crucial information: "neither can live while the other survives." This meant that Harry had to kill Voldemort himself, or possibly vice-versa. In the end, Harry learned about his past in even greater detail and became known from then on as the "Chosen One."
The Half-Blood Prince and Turmoil at Hogwarts
Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts would be his last as well as the most tragic. It started when Dumbledore came to Harry's house on Privet Drive and gave him Sirius' will. He learned that he inhereted Sirius' estate, 12 Grimmauld Place. Harry then went with Dumbledore to recruit an old friend of Albus's for a teaching position at Hogwarts. They found Horace Slughorn in a dilapidated house and in hiding; however, he was trying to hide his covert nature and acted welcoming. He was a Slytherin when at Hogwarts as well as someone well-read in the Dark Arts. Thus, he was an easy target. At first being obdurate to accept any position, he quickly grew a fascination with Harry because of his fame, power and talent, the three traits Slughorn values in anyone. Slughorn was won over by the presence of Potter and agreed to join, just as Dumbledore planned. Here, he told Harry that it was vital for him to be "collected" by Slughorn because of what would be needed from him later in the year. He also told Harry that he would be starting private lessons with Harry throughout the school year, teaching all he knew about Lord Voldemort during this time.
Harry spends some time at The Burrow for the rest of the summer with his best friends Ron and Hermione, and he starts to develop affectionate feelings for Ron's sister, Ginny. They then went to Diagon Alley where they saw Fred and George's new shop, Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. Harry had given the money he won from the Triwizard Tournament to the twins and they invested it into a joke shop. As a result, it was one of the last remaining shops and they were making loads of money. The trio then saw Draco Malfoy and his mother going to Borgin and Burkes, a shop specializing in Dark Magic, and they spied on him. They saw him staring at a large cabinet and there were many Death Eaters around him, including Fenrir Greyback, the werewolf who infected Remus Lupin as a child. Harry believed that Draco was becoming a Death Eater in this process; Hermione and Ron disagreed. They then went to Hogwarts via the Hogwarts Express, where Harry met Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood once again, and he found out that Ginny was dating Dean Thomas, a friend of his. This made him very jealous and angry at Dean, for he had feelings for Ginny as well. Harry then went to the train car where Draco and his friends were and eavesdropped. He heard something about him going to "bigger and better things" and that he had a job assigned to him. Draco realized that Harry was spying on them with his Invisibility Cloak and paralyzed him. After he falls to the ground, Harry got his nose smashed in by Draco's foot, and was unable to move to go to Hogwarts. Thankfully, Tonks, assigned in protecting Harry, found him and brought him to the school. At the feast, Harry learned from Dumbledore's speech that Slughorn will return to his old position as Potions Teacher and Snape will now take over the Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching position. This came to the shock and displeasure of many of the students.
After fearing that he would not be able to take Potions because of his less than high marks on his OWLS, Harry was relieved to learn that Slughorn accepted students less strictly than Snape. Thus, he joined his class and picked up a old, beat-up textbook from the cupboard. It was labeled "Property of the Half-Blood Prince" and contained many hand-written notes and spells throughout. On the first lesson, Harry created a perfect formula for Living Death by the aid of the textbook and won over Slughorn's attention. He received a bottle of Felix Felicis as a prize, a small potion that grants the user great luck during usage, ensuring your endeavors will succeed.
Dumbledore and Harry started their venture through Tom Riddle's memories through Dumbledore's Pensieve. He saw the mother of Tom, Merope Gaunt, as an abused daughter of Morfin Gaunt. Morfin was going to be arrested by Bob Ogden, the man who supplied the memory, for assaulting a Muggle called Tom Riddle Sr. Merope had a crush on Tom and gave him a love potion, where they then conceived a child, Tom Riddle Jr. In the next memory, a pregnant Merope Gaunt sells her sacred locket to Caractacus Burke, a founder of Borgin and Burkes. This locket would later become a Horcrux.
Meanwhile, Harry was doing extraordinary in Slughorn's class thanks to Half-Blood Prince's book. He was doing better than Hermione (a feat in itself) and Slughorn invited him to the "Slug Club" meetings, in which Horace took his star students and had a meal with them, learning about their or their relative's success. He did this because Dumbledore wanted Harry to allow Slughorn to "collect" him because of his vital use later. Also in the book were certain spells the creator made himself, such as "Levicorpus," which suspends the victim by their feet, "Muffliato," which causes a ringing noise in people's ears, and, for enemies, "Sectumsempra," a spell Harry would learn the effects of later. Harry also became the head of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, a nice consolation for not becoming a prefect the year before.
Harry grew increasingly suspicious of Draco, as he had been displaying furtive tendencies as well as sneaking around the castle, seen to Harrry on the Marauder's Map. Whilst on a trip to Hogsmeade, the trio witnessed Katie Bell, a fellow Gryffindor Quidditch member, being possessed by an unknown source because she touched a cursed necklace. She went into a bathroom normal, came out with the necklace and said she must give it to Dumbledore. Someone made an attempt on Dumbledore's life, much to the concern of the fellow teachers, especially Professor McGonagall. Harry accused Malfoy of being the perpetrator but he had no proof. Later, Harry and Dumbledore ventured into another memory when Dumbledore first met Tom Riddle right before he went to Hogwarts, revealing to him that he is a Wizard. This encounter was eerie because he revealed to Albus his ability to speak Parselmouth as well as his tendency to hurt others.
The romantic relationships the students had also came to head this year. Hermione told Ron that she would take him to the Slughorn Christmas party with her, much to Ron's pleasant surprise. The relationship between the two improved and became very close. Harry had also develped intimate feelings for Ginny and he became jealous with fellow Gryffindor Dean Thomas because he was dating her. After a Quidditch practice, Harry and Ron came onto Dean and Ginny kissing and they both grew angry, for different reasons. Harry grew angrily jealous towards Dean while Ron became infuriated at Ginny because he didn't want her to be "snogging" people in public. Ginny told him that her love life was private and he was just jealous because he never kissed a girl before and pointing out that Hermione once kissed Viktor Krum. Ron was crippled by these news and his relationship with Hermione went sour. Harry still was trying to maintain a neutral position with Ginny but realized that he, in fact, had fallen in love with her.
Next, at the big Gryffindor vs. Slytherin Quidditch game, Ron was feeling very nervous because of the pressure on him as the new Keeper (aka goalie). Harry made it look as if he slipped his Felix Felicis into his cup and Ron feels extremely lucky. They win the game due to his confidence and Harry reveals to Hermione that he never actually put anything in his cup; it was just an illusion. Then, longtime admirer of Ron, Lavender Brown, approached him and started to kiss him madly. He went along with it and they developed a very bizarre, shallow relationship of not much more than making out and the minimum of speaking. Hermione was wrecked by this development because she had really started to love Ron. She sent birds to Ron in a violent manner and Harry comforted her while she goes through the period of heartbreak. Later, Hermione asked Ron's enemy, Cormac McLaggen, on a date to Slughorn's Christmas Party, just to spite him. Harry went with Luna himself after learning that various female students were trying to seduce him with love potions. While at the party, Draco attempted to gatecrash but Snape escorted him out. Harry eavesdropped on their conversation and heard that Malfoy was chosen for a mission and that he didn't need any help in accomplishing it. Snape tells Draco that he made the Unbreakable Vow for him, swearing his loyalty to Bellatrix Lestrange and Draco's mother, Narcissa.
At Christmas time, Harry returned to The Burrow with Ron and told him, in addition to Arthur Weasley and Lupin, what he overheard. They didn't consider the news that concerning and only believed that Snape was acting as a spy for Dumbledore. Harry strongly disagreed. At The Burrow, there were two different events that happened next (changes from film to book). For one, the new Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, visited Harry during Christmastime and wanted him to be a poster child for the Ministry. Harry flatly refused, aware of their despicable practices as well as the literal scars he carried over from last year's reign of Umbridge. There was also a different, very significant event at The Burrow next in which Bellatrix Lestrange and Fenrir Greyback invaded the premises through their Death Eater transportation skills. They lured Harry into a duel, in which Ginny, Arthur, Lupin and Tonks fight with him, but the Death Eaters quickly retreated and burned down The Burrow after this. A distraught Molly Weasley, along with Fred, Ron and George, waited outside.
Back at Hogwarts, Harry resumed lessons with Dumbledore. They viewed a memory in which Lord Voldemort found out who is true paternal parents are, Muggles, and murders them all. He frames his Morfin Gaunt for the crime and takes his ring which he would make into a Horcrux. They also viewed a memory when Tom was talking to Slughorn at a Slug Club dinner party and he asked him what a certain type of dark magic was, illegible in this specific memory. Dumbledore believed that Horace tainted his own memory out of shame and assigned Harry with the task he had been priming him for: get the memory from Slughorn. After a failed attempt at trying to procure the memory, Slughorn started to avoid Harry and knew that Dumbledore was behind all of it.
During March, for Ron's seventeenth birthday, he ate a whole heart-shaped carton of chocolates that were intended from Romilda Vane. They contained a powerful love potion and Ron started to have fantasies with her. Harry brought Ron to Slughorn, in which Slughorn quickly made a remedy. He was trying to get over the fact that Harry had been interrogating him but he managed to understand Harry's approach. They all had a glass of mead and Ron drank it first. He quickly collapsed and Harry saved his life by giving him a Bezoar, a fact he learned from the Half-Blood Prince's book. While at the hospital wing accompanying Ron, Harry learned that the drink was intended as a gift from Slughorn to Dumbledore and that Ron chose Hermione as his partner rather than Lavender, at least in his subconscious state. Dumbledore later had a meeting with Harry, disappointed by his failure to procure the memory and he showed him two new ones. One showed Riddle murdering in order to obtain Helga Hufflepuff's cup as well as Slytherin's locket, both which would become Horcruxes. There was also a memory of Tom going to Hogwarts to apply for a position, which Dumbledore refused because he was aware of Tom's ellicit activity.
With no luck at acquiring Slughorn's memory, Harry was in desperate need of help. Ron said all it needed was a "bit of luck" and Harry then got the idea of using the Felix Felicis. He used the potion and went to Hagrid's hut for Aragog's (the giant Arcomantula) funeral. Slughorn attended due to a "lucky" coincidence and, after some heavy drinking with Hagrid and an emotional talk with Harry, he gave up the memory. Upon viewing it with Dumbledore, they learned that Slughorn revealed to young Tom what a "Horcrux" was, an object that encases one's soul and, upon physical destruction, keeps the alive. Tom said that he was curious about "seven" of these Horcruxes and Slughorn was taken aback, shocked by his student's macabre sense but still believing this was all hypothetical. Judging by Tom's look by the end, it was anything but. Dumbledore was shocked by this revelation and then came to think of the Horcruxes Voldemort made. He was pretty sure about six: the locket, the cup, the diary, an object of Ravenclaw's, the ring and his snake, Nagini.
Subsequently, Ron told Harry that Ginny had broken up with Dean and Harry did not make any move at the moment but decided to wait. As well, long suspicious of Malfoy's activity, Harry finally cornered him at a bathroom crying over his failing mission and they dueled. Harry used a spell he learned from the Half-Blood Prince's book, "Sectumsempra," and Malfoy suffered from large gashes in his abdomen that caused him to bleed profusely. Thankfully, Snape was there to save Malfoy's life and gave Harry as much detention as he could get. Harry then disposed of his sacred textbook in the Room of Requirement. Him and Ginny shared an intimate moment there that they would start their relationship.
Later, Dumbledore called Harry to his office for an important lesson. On his way there, Harry encountered Professor Trelawney leaving the Headmaster's office and told Harry about the story in which Snape overheard the prophecy she foretold at the Hog's Head regarding Harry being "the Chosen One." Snape thus told Voldemort and Harry's parents were killed. Harry grew furious and yelled at Dumbledore, asking how he could hire the man who killed his parents. Dumbledore sympathetically told him that Snape deeply regretted his actions and that he had since turned his ways. For the important matters that needed to be done, Dumbledore told Harry that they were going to a dangerous place that would require his assistance. The locket of Slytherin was there and they needed to retrieve it if they wanted to kill Voldemort. Harry obliged and went with him to the Horcrux Cave.
At the cave, they encountered a assortment of obstacles that Voldemort placed. Once they made their way to the middle island via boat, they gazed at the basin filled with emerald green potion. Dumbledore knew that the locket was beneath it, and the potion could not be summoned out or simply thrown out: it had to be drunk. Dumbledore instructed Harry to force feed to potion to him because the potions effects may cause him to forget his true goal. Harry did so, and Dumbledore experienced great pain and thirst. He was at the weakest state Harry ever saw him at, and he was experiencing painful memories from his past, saying, "It's all my fault." Once the locket was obtained, Dumbledore requested water. Harry had to procure water from the dark lake around him but by doing so, he awoke the scours of Inferi (dead bodies reanimated by Dark Magic; zombies) that were within the lake. Harry tried to fight them off as a weak Dumbledore struggled to regain energy but he was overwhelmed. Albus did, in fact, save Harry's life as he caused a huge whirlwind of fire to engulf the Inferi and make a safe path for them to escape. After fleeing the cave, they Apparated back to Hogwarts.
Once at Hogwarts, the two found that the Dark Mark was over the castle. Always a sign of trouble, they investigated. Once at the Astronomy Tower, Dumbledore heard someone approaching and he wordlessly paralyzed Harry, hiding him underneath the Invisibility Cloak, when Draco Malfoy barged in, disarming Dumbledore. Draco told him that he made attempts on his life throughout the year through the necklace and mead incidents and that he was there at that moment to finally kill him. Dumbledore told Draco that he knew of his intentions throughout the entire year but did not act because he knew that Voldemort would harm or even kill him and his family if he did not succeed. He gave Draco a chance to change to the good side and offered him protection but Draco said he had to do his task. Other Death Eaters arrived through the Vanishing Cabinet Draco had been mending throughout the year (the sister cabin was in Borgin and Burkes) and chided Draco in his inability to act. Snape arrived shortly later and, after listening to a few, passionate pleas from Dumbledore, cast the Killing Curse at Dumbledore. Dumbledore was dead and his body fell from the Astronomy Tower to the grounds below.
Harry was shocked by this event and pursued Snape and his gang of Death Eaters, free from Dumbledore's spell. A battle between Death Eaters and Order of the Phoenix members ensued and Harry found Snape on the grounds near Hagrid's hut and tried to stop him from leaving. Casting spells out of his fury, Harry was easily countered by Snape who even offered advice on how to improve his spellcasting. Harry called him "a coward" and Snape furiously retorted, "Don't call me a coward!!!", a statement that would ring especially true with future revelations. When Harry tried to use "Sectumsempra," Snape also revealed that he was the "Half-Blood Prince." Snape escaped with Malfoy and Harry was left on the grounds alone, exhausted, exasperated and heartbroken by the turn of events.
Harry approached Dumbledore's lifeless body beside the Astronomy Tower as students and teachers formed around him. Harry found the locket that they had sacrificed so much over and, after reading the note that was encased within, found out it was fake. A mysterious person by the name of "R.A.B." had stolen the locket beforehand and had replaced it with a fake; he said he wanted to destroy it but its true state was unknown. All the pain Dumbledore had to put through that ultimately weakened him for his death was for nothing. Around him, the students all were in sad, emotional state. Professor McGonagall put her wand in the air to dispel the Dark Mark that was still hanging over their grounds and all the other student followed suit. The Dark Mark was vanquished and they were left with a dead Headmaster surrounded by those who loved him.
After the battle, they found out that Bill Weasley, Ron's oldest brother, was attacked by Greyback during the fight but had no permanent werewolf effects except scars. McGonagall asked Harry what he and Dumbledore were doing that resulted in this but Harry, under his late Headmaster's orders to only confine this information with Ron and Hermione, could not tell. At the funeral, Harry ended his relationship with Ginny for her own protection, aware that he would be in even greater danger now than ever before. She understood his reasoning but still loved him, feelings that he shared as well. Harry told Hermione and Ron that he would not be returning to Hogwarts next year, instead hunting down the remaining Horcruxes and finishing Dumbledore's work. Hermione got past Harry's stubborn attitude and assured Harry that she and Ron would be attending him along his journey. They were all together, sharing these last glorious, peaceful moments as they watched Fawkes, without a master, fly into the sunset, never to appear again.
During the same night, many of Harry's friends and mentors appeared to aid in Harry's relocation to The Burrow. Because Harry's protection was more vulnerable than before due to Ministry omnipresence, a Death Eater attack could occur at any moment and Harry had to move to his next location. Voldemort had taken over much of the Ministry and put his own puppets in charge to do his bidding so many forms of transportation were no longer safe. So, Mundungus Fletcher, the sleazy, filthy con artist, came up with an idea for "Seven Potters" or having six other people drink Polyjuice Potion for Harry to make the real one almost undistinguishable. Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, Fleur Delacour and Mundungus all drank the potion to become Harry and were paired with Nymphadora Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Arthur Weasley, Remus Lupin, Bill Weasley and Alastor Moody, respectively. They all flew by broom to different Order of the Phoenix safehouses where they would use a Portkey to transport to the Burrow. Harry was paired with Hagrid and they used Hagrid's (or Sirius's) motorcycle.
During this episode, the Death Eaters knew of their presence because they were on their tail from the beginning. Early on in the "Battle over Little Whinging," Harry's beloved owl, Hedwig, was killed by a stray Killing Curse. Harry also gave away his position when he disarmed, not stupified, Stan Shunpike, the Knight Bus attendant he met four years earlier. He knew he was under the Imperius Spell and he did not want to harm him by causing him to fall but the Death Eaters knew "Expelliarmus" as Harry's "signature" spell and thus, that blew his cover. Voldemort himself participated in this fight, flying on nothing more than a cloud of what looked to be smoke. Harry's wand acted on its own accord at this moment and recognized Voldemort to be an enemy due to the Prior Incantatem effect it experienced over two years ago. It shot a "spurt of golden fire" at Voldemort, even when he was using Lucius Malfoy's wand to specifically trying to avoid the exact occurrence. Before he could attack him again, Harry and Hagrid crashed onto the Tonks' property, their destination, passing through the various, powerful defensive spells that were assembled. Here, Ted Tonks (Dora's father) and Andromeda (Dora's mother who bared a striking resemblance to her sister, Bellatrix Lestrange) healed Hagrid and Harry's wounds. Harry was still very upset by the death of Hedwig, his one true companion through all his years. Besides Hagrid, she was his first glimpse into the Wizarding World. Most people did not realize Hedwig's death because of the events that would follow but Harry always did. Nonetheless, Hagrid and Harry used the Portkey and were transported to the Burrow.
The subsequent events were total chaos. No one had arrived yet when they got there and most transports were missing in action. Molly and Ginny Weasley waited for the rest of the people to arrive, albeit in a very nervous state. Next to arrive were George and Lupin. George was gravely injured with one of his ears cut off from a Sectumsempra spell, Snape's specialty as Lupin recalled. Molly healed some of it but could repair his ear because the spell was powerful Dark Magic. Hermione and Kingsley then arrived, followed by Arthur and Fred. Ron and Tonks returned next, with Ron exhausted but proud that he hit at least one Death Eater. Bill and Fleur finally arrived where they brought sad news: Moody was dead. He told them the story of how Voldemort probably thought that Harry would be with the most formidable Auror so he pursued Mad-Eye and Mundungus. Mundungus panicked immediately and Disapparated, causing a Killing Curse that Voldemort sent that was meant for him to hit Moody when he was flying. Bill saw Moody fall to the ground, surely deceased. The group grew somber and wondered if one of them leaked information to the Death Eaters beforehand. Harry intervened and declared that he trusted all of them with his life and that no one would betray him or his friends. They then declared a toast in Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody's memory, as many said he was the strongest of them all.
Harry spent the rest of his summer at the Burrow, letting the two losses of the battle be mitigated by the menial tasks required in preparing for Bill and Fleur's wedding. The two, engaged since the summer before this one, planned for their wedding to be at the Burrow, and Molly was pleased by this but the work greatly stressed her. She would question Harry, like she did Ron and Hermione, about what task he had to perform and why they were dropping out of school but he told her that it was confidential information. She obliged, reluctantly. Harry's 17th birthday arrived, and he got a potpourri of interesting gifts. The "sneakoscope" was the most notable, a device that whistles when mischievous and untrustworthy deeds are being performed in close proximity. Ginny also gave Harry his own " present," a very passionate kiss, one that Harry never felt before. Ron "accidentally" barged into the room and ceased their moment, much to Harry's disappointment. The Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, arrived later in the day and gave Harry, Ron, and Hermione the contents of Albus Dumbledore's will. Hermione received The Tales of Beetle the Bard, a tale of fairy tales; Ron the Deluminator, the device Dumbledore used upon his visit to Privet Drive when passing along Harry as an orphan and an object that, with a click of a button, sucks the light out of any source in an area and puts it back in. Harry received his first Snitch that he won in his first game. Snitches have memory of what first touched it, and Harry was afraid that if he touched it, the contents inside would open. However, they did not. Scrimgeour told them that the sword of Godric Gryffindor was also in his will but the Ministry detained that in search for suspicious magic. The trio was not happy but Rufus insisted that it was not Albus' to give. When Scrimgeour left, Harry remembered that the Snitch first touched his mouth because he accidentally swallowed it. So, he placed it at his mouth and nothing opened but a line of text was visible shortly, "I open at the close." They tried to determine what this meant but they had no luck.
Bill and Fleur's wedding occurred next, and many guests arrived. Harry was disguised as "Barny Weasley," a fake cousin of Ron's. He spoke with a dear, lifelong friend of Dumbledore's, Elphias Doge. He tried to make all of Dumbledore's memories seem immaculate and sacred but Ron's aunt, Muriel, told Harry and Elphias information that either she knew or was being brought up by infamous Daily Prophet reporter, Rita Skeeter. Harry learned that Dumbledore's family, as well as Bathilda Bagshot, famous historian, lived in Godric's Hollow, right in the same neighborhood he spent his first year with his parents. That Dumbledore never told him this really disturbed him. However, there was no time for reflection at the moment because a Lynx Patronus appeared with the voice of Kingsley Shacklebolt proclaiming, "The Ministry has fallen. Scrimgeour is dead. They are coming.". Panic ensued and the trio fled to a cafe in Tottenham Court.
At the cafe, the three sat down in a booth where Harry explicitly said Voldemort's name when wondering how the others would be at the wedding. A suspicious duo walked into the cafe and tried to take out the three; the trio had their wits and reflexes and beat them all. The cafe was ruined but, thanks to Hermione, they fixed it up and obliterated the memories of the two Death Eaters in pursuit. They all went to 12 Grimmauld Place, the old headquarters to the Order of the Phoenix and the Black residence. They wondered if Snape could get in because he was revealed of the location's secrets but they encountered two defenses involving the deceased Alastor Moody and Albus Dumbledore that proved to be effective. They also found Kreacher, the house elf of the residence, to be of particular use because he knew critical information. He told them, with some persuasion, his chilling story involving "R.A.B.", the name on the locket. These mysterious initials turned out to be Regulus Arcturus Black, brother to Sirius. He was a Death Eater but he knew that he was in danger so he decided to go against the Dark Lord. Kreacher had gone to the Horcrux Cave with Lord Voldemort not long before to assist him in putting the locket into the poisonous basin, drinking the painful liquid to do so. Regulus told him to come and do it again, where Kreacher experienced even greater pain. Regulus took the locket out and replaced it with a fake. He then was killed by the rising army of Inferi in the lake and Kreacher had it and Disapparated. Kreacher then had the locket stolen from the scumbag Mundungus Fletcher who was pillaging the house after Sirius' death. Kreacher tried to stop him but failed. To make him feel better, Harry gave Kreacher the fake locket that he was involved with, and Kreacher was overjoyed, improving his mood and cooking. Harry assigned Kreacher with bringing Mundungus to him personally, a task Kreacher took with pleasure.
Lupin came by the house and told Harry and the other two of the present situation: the Ministry (now run by Voldemort) was looking for Harry, saying that he was part of Dumbledore's death and they were also persecuting and punishing Muggle-born Witches and Wizards. He also told Ron specifically that everyone at the Burrow is safe, yet shaken, and that Scrimgeour died after being tortured for information on Harry. He gave no info in the end and Harry's respect for the man increased. Lupin then offered his assistance to the three on their quest, even despite the fact that Tonks and him were going to have a child soon. Harry called him a coward and someone running away from his responsibilities. Lupin grew furious and left in a fury while Harry felt his words were right and meaningful. Then, Kreacher brought back Fletcher and he told Harry that he did not have the locket anymore. Dolores Umbridge took it when she was inspecting his wares and considered it a bribe.
After careful planning and spying over a month, the three invaded the Ministry. They all took the identities of different people, Harry as Runcorn, a menacing figure, Ron as Cattermole, a smaller figure whose wife is being interrogated, and Hermione as Mafalda Hopkirk, an assistant to Umbridge. They infiltrated the Ministry as these figures through use of Polyjuice Potion and tried to find the locket. After searching and running into a few close calls, they found the locket on Umbridge's neck while she is interrogating so called "Muggle-borns." Harry stunned her as well as Yaxley, a Death Eater. He then casted a Patrnous which repelled the Dementors that were in the room and showed a beacon for the other victims up for questioning to follow. Guards started to pursue them because they found a hole in Umbridge's door to her office, a hole made by Harry because, earlier, he saw Mad-Eye Moody's eye being used as a sentry and decided to give it proper respects. Nonetheless, it became a problem for them and after Ron met the real Cattermole, causing a lot of confusion, they escaped to Grimmauld Place but quickly Disapparated again to a forest. Hermione told them that Yaxley Apparated with them as well and got into the Safe Zone of the Grimmauld Place house. Now, the Death Eaters had access to it and it would be unavailable as a refuge for the three. This came as a serious blow to them and Harry actually was somewhat mad at Hermione but there truly was nothing either of them could have done in the end.
For awhile after, all three had to take turns wearing the locket around their neck. During this time each of them felt depressed and down. Ron was most affected by this and he grew rather moody and harsh whenever the locket was around his neck. The three of them overhear a conversation outside their tent one night with Ted Tonks, Dean Thomas (a friend of theirs at school), Griphook the goblin as well as Gurnok and Dirk Cresswell. In this conversation the people are talking about the various going-ons in the Wizarding world including some information about what is happening at Hogwarts. Apparently, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom and Ginny all invaded Snape's office and tried to steal the sword that was on display there. This sword was the fabled Sword of Godric Gryffindor and they were quickly reprimanded. Instead of severe punishment however, all the had was time in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid. Harry viewed this as peculiar. Nonetheless,
Ron grew angry at Harry when he did not express much concern over the fates of the three. Obviously caring deeply about all of them, especially Ron's own sister, Harry defended himself and said he cared for them and Harry saw that he was wearing the locket, a sign of his attitude. He was angry at the fact that Harry and Hermione were the only ones making the decisions and he was relegated to the side. Ron asked Hermione if she wanted to ditch Harry with him but she recited their promise they made and Ron interpreted this as Hermione "choosing him." He exited and Disapparated away from them, unable to reform contact again and not hearing the desperate, emotional pleas Hermione was making for his return.
Ron's departure shook the two deeply. They feared they could not find him again or vice-versa because the defensive spells they cast were strong and there to hide them from all intruders. Hermione cried many days and nights, and barely ever spoke words to Harry. Any mention of Ron was thought to be taboo by them. They quietly decided that they should explore Harry's birthplace, Godric's Hollow, having an idea that Dumbledore may have entrusted the real sword of Gryffindor with Bathilda Bagshot. They disguised as Muggles with Polyjuice Potion and walked around the village, on Christmas Eve apparently. They visited the graveyard of the village, where Harry and Hermione saw Dumbledore's mother and sister's graves and then found Harry's own parents. Harry grew very emotional, standing over the remains of his parents through the love of his own mother. He was at a state of vulnerability like never seen before, and Hermione comforted him with a gravebed of flowers and they then walked out of the graveyard.
Outside the park, they saw the remains of Harry's old house, with a permanent hole in the side because of Voldemort's backfired curse. The tribute pedestal outside the house had many signatures and positive advice on it from people supporting Harry and his fight. Also gazing at the house was a small, old woman who they determined to be Bathilda. She beckoned them to follow and they did so with some suspicion. They were taken to her house and she requested to only see Harry momentarily. She did not say any words until alone with Harry and Harry felt a strange sensation of satisfaction from Voldemort's emotions. Bathilda was revealed to be actually Voldemort's snake, Nagini, and she tried to hold Harry for as long as possible but, with the help of Hermione, they escaped right before Voldemort could reach them. They were relieved to be safe but Hermione accidentally broke Harry's wand with a stray Blasting Curse. This was a serious event because Harry's wand was the key to many of his successes such as his duel with Voldemort at the graveyard three years earlier. By a careless mistake, Harry's wand was broken, fractured past the point of magical repair. Hermione was very, very apologetic and Harry tried to act courteous but, deep down, he never felt more angry at her.
Days later during a night watch, Harry saw a silver doe Patronus appear out of nowhere and he followed it to a small lake. Upon inspection of the cold body of water, he saw the Sword of Gryffindor encased under the ice. Feeling that this was a test for his true Gryffindor values, he took off most of his clothes and dived down into the water. It was unbearably cold and he tried to grab the sword but the locket, which he kept around his neck, was contracting and trying to strangle him. He next found himself above water and alive, with Ron standing beside him holding both the Sword and the locket. He explained to Harry that he returned and many of the frustrations that Harry had against him were gone due to the fact that he saved his life. Harry had Ron destroy the locket, a Horcrux, with the sword but it didn't go without a fight. The locket presented images of Harry and Hermione in a passionate embrace while mocking Ron for always being overshadowed by Harry Potter in every way. Ron panicked but managed to destroy the locket. He was shocked afterwards but Harry assured him that none of it was true and that his relationship with Hermione had always been akin to a "brother-sister" one. They returned to the tent where Ron found Hermione once again and she attacked him physically and verbally. She berated him for leaving them and he apologized greatly and explained how he returned. One day when Hermione mentioned the word "Ron" his Deluminator lit up and allowed him to Apparate to a specific place, close to one of their concealed campsites. He did it again and found them that day when Harry wandered out into the forest in search for the Silver Doe. He assumed that Dumbledore gave him the Deluminator because he knew that Ron would ditch them but Harry pointed out that he would want to come back. Hermione was infuriated with Ron but slowly was pleased by his presence again. Ron told Harry that the reason the Death Eaters found them so quickly at Tottenham Court was because they used the word "Voldemort" and it has had a Taboo placed on it, which monitors its use and tracks down anyone who dares to say it.

Harry Potter is the main protagonist in the Harry Potter universe. He became famous in the Wizarding world after his initial encounter with Voldemort that left him an orphan and a lighting shaped scar on his forehead.
Harry Potter, son of Lily Potter and James Potter, is a boy wizard. He is perhaps the most famous Wizard of his time because of the fact he survived the Killing Curse, the only one to do so, destroyed all of Voldemort's Horcruxes, and dueled and defeated Voldemort, killing him once and for all. He also won the Triwizard Tournament in his fourth year, became the youngest Quidditch seeker in over a century, took part in many significant Wizarding battles, and united all the Deathly Hallows, the only Wizard ever to do so as well. Harry's best friends are Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. He also grew very close to his mentor, Albus Dumbledore, who taught him many skills and prepared him for defeating Voldemort. In the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe portrays Harry Potter. He is voiced by different actors in the video games.
Early Life
Harry was born on July 31, 1980 to James and Lily Potter. He was born in hiding, under the protection of the Fidelius Charm on his household in Godric's Hollow. The reason for this was because he was under mortal danger from Lord Voldemort, who had heard of a prophecy that Sybill Trelawney foretold that said that a Wizard who has the power to kill Voldemort will be born at the end of July. The prophecy was deciphered by Voldemort and Dumbledore to be Harry, so he was granted protection. For the Fidelius Charm to work, a family entrusts their secret with a Secret-Keeper. This person is the only one that can reveal the whereabouts of the hidden house to others and, thus, must be loyal and protective. James and Lily chose Sirius Black to be their Secret-Keeper, but changed it later to Peter Pettigrew because they feared that Sirius would be the obvious choice. However, the people close to the Potters ( Remus Lupin, Dumbledore) believed the Secret-Keeper was Sirius at the time.Pettigrew revealed the location of the Potters to Lord Voldemort, betraying his friends.
Living With The Dursleys and Magic Revealed
Harry's several subsequent years would be filled with ridicule and lies. The Dursley family were Muggles and tried to distance themselves from any mentions of magic. They were aware of Harry's past and his encounter with Voldemort but they lied to Harry, telling him that his parents died in a car crash and his parents were of a shameful existence. During this time, Harry lived in a cupboard under the stairs and was bullied by his cousin, Dudley. He was usually ordered around like a slave and given no respect. All of his belongings were hand-me-downs and he would receive paltry, miniscule gifts for Holidays when Dudley would get dozens. In addition, Harry would experience frequent bouts of magic but the Dursleys tried their hardest to suppress or hide any of these occurrences. For instance, on a visit to the zoo, Harry made the glass that Dudley was leaning on, which was covering a snake exhibit, disappear, causing Dudley and his parents, naturally, to panic. Harry actually spoke to the snake, unawarely discovering that he can speak Parseltongue as well. He then made the glass reform again when Dudley was inside the cage. Upon Harry telling Vernon that the glass disappeared "like magic," Uncle Vernon proclaimed, "There is no such thing as magic!!!"Harry had a benefit of living at his home, however.
The Hunt for Horcruxes and the Deathly Hallows
Harry spent his last summer at Privet Drive, usually away from the Dursleys. Harry read a few articles giving tribute to Dumbledore's death and learned a few, new things about him. For one, he found out that Dumbledore had a sister who died at a young age from mysterious circumstances, as well as a "Muggle-hating father" who was sent to Azkaban for life. This information all made Harry feel as if Dumbledore left out so much in his life from him and he wished he heard more. Next, the Dursleys were brought into protection by two Ministry of Magic Aurors, Dedalus Diggle and Hestia Jones. They needed to be guarded from any Death Eater attacks now that Harry would turn seventeen and the "trace," the magical spell that kept him safe until he came of age, would break. Dudley experienced a rare change of attitude and told Harry that he was grateful for him saving his life from the Dementor attack two years earlier. The two engaged in an awkward handshake and Vernon and Petunia exited without saying anything to Harry at all.During the same night, many of Harry's friends and mentors appeared to aid in Harry's relocation to The Burrow.
