Overview
Haunter is a Ghost & Poison-type Pokémon that first appears in
Pokémon Red/ Blue. It first appears in this game in the
Pokémon Tower in Lavender town as one of the wild Pokémon when the hero sets out to rest the soul of a deceased
Marowak that was haunting the tower.
Haunter's Ghost-type characteristics give it immunity to all Normal and Fighting-type moves. Its Poison-type cuts down the damage done by Grass-type moves by 50%, and poison type moves by 75%. Its two types together cut down damage from Bug-type moves by 75%. However, its Ghost-type properties make Haunter take double the damage from Dark and Ghost-types, and its Poison-type takes double damage from Psychic-type moves.
Haunter, like all other Ghost-type Pokémon, can use the attack
Curse (the only Pokémon move with no type attached) with special properties. Instead of raising the Attack & Defense stats while lowering Speed, this move with inflict a "curse" upon their opponent, significantly whittling away its health (25% of max HP) once a turn unless the Pokémon is switched out of battle.
Haunter's Japanese name is Gôsuto (ゴースト), which is intended to phonetically sound identical to the English word "ghost."
Evolution
Haunter is the evolved form of
Gastly, a Pokémon who's body is entirely comprised of gaseous matter. Haunter evolves into the Pokémon
Gengar when traded.
