On January 12th Sony unveiled the official US boxart of the highly anticipated PS3 game Heavy Rain which was met with...less then stellar reactions. In the comments that followed the post on the Playstation.Blog one poster asked if there will any way to get the UK boxart in a printable version to which Associate Product Manager, Christian Cardona, replied with:

We’ll be doing that for those that would prefer the UK artwork. Keep an eye out on the blog around launch!

Nice to see Sony taking note of what people think and offering another option. I know it's only a boxart but as an origami fan I was pretty disappointed with how they took the Spanish Pajarita origami off of it.

The stupidity of all of this is just fucking incredible. People were actually pissed about a fucking picture that has no bearing whatsoever on the quality of the product itself. Packaging. People were fucking bitching about packaging. Does this ever happen with any other product or is it just gamers that are complete fucking idiots?

This thread would be 100% more awesome if someone posted the 2 boxarts.

@RsistncE: A little bit of both. I was just disappointed that they took an origami piece off of it. I fully instead on printing the UK one and I'll probably make an origami piece out of the US one, seems fitting.

Companies seem to have an obsession with getting a lame shot of CG characters in all their NA box arts.  Still haven't figured out why.

Good. Gotta go buy some glossy paper now I guess.

Still I wish they just printed it double side.

I don't think it's just packaging, by the way. Back in the day when movies were bas-ass, people painted bitching posters they cared about. Games shouldn't be different. The cover art should be goddamned awesome.

The US one is poorly photoshopped. The fuckin' ripple appears ON the origami, christsakes! Doesn't even look like it's raining. The european one is well made, and atmospheric and creepy.

Because in the US there is this unwritten PR rule about heaving the main character on the front.

Agreed. See: Resident Evil 4. Europe and Japan got a better cover for that game too.

Yes. In those region it's more about capturing the atmosphere of the game.

So you're saying that all these years spent reading the Bazooka Joe strips on the warpers meant nothing????? I strongly disagree.

Caring about box art is something that artists tend to do. We're so critical when it comes to artistic expression especially when it comes to commercial products. >.>

As far as the actual box art, there's nothing wrong with the US box art except for the title font style. It's too simple, where as the UK one is very nice. I'm kinda tired of these certain people thinking that a freakin' logo of the game is more than enough for a cover. This came about when the Final Fantasy XIII cover was released, and people were whining, saying, "I just want a white background with the title, just like all the other ones!" God that's so boring, vibrancy is a good thing for cover art.

@Bones8677:  There's vibrancy, and then there's just plain busy. This box has too much going on IMO. Saying that as a visual artist, which is also why I care so much about posters and such.

@XII_Sniper:

Jesus, you're right about that ripple on the origami bird. That's just crappy.
Post by Bones8677 (2,943 posts) See mini bio Level 20 / 973 ACH / 14005 P
@XII_Sniper: I will agree that it is busy, mostly crowded. This is evident with the third character on the right showing only his head. The thing is with US box art, they need to tell the consumer a part of the story with it's cover. Comparing the two versions above, the US version tells me something about itself. Where as the UK version tells me nothing.
