The first installment of the series. An evolution of the concepts found in its spiritual predecessor King's Bounty, also developed by Jon Van Caneghem.

Campaign

The campaigns in Heroes of Might and Magic 1, centers around who will be king.  The four armies that vie for the throne are the armies of the Knights, Warlocks, Sorceror, and Barbarian as they vie for control of the realms.  Each campaign is divided up into missions, and the player always controls one type of army as they go against another.  Armies exsist under the command of Heroes who can carry up to five stacks of soldiers and levels up and gains more commander powers which he can apply on the battlefield.  For the purposes of canon the Knight wins the war and his death would later set up the succession wars between Roland and Archibald.

Each side has its own unique advantage.  Warlocks had the hardest hitting units in the game--the Dragons and  Hydra.  Sorcerors have access to very fast units, Barbarians and Knights both have relatively cheap armies that can be amassed quickly.  Each mission takes place on a world map with multiple castles and resource points to capture.  Battles take place on a battlefield that represents a game within a game where armies match up on the field.  All troop movement takes  place with the heroes in the first game.  The Heroes armies are raised at his castle, using resources gained by controlling the various mines and chokepoints on the map.
