Homeworld: Cataclysm is the sequel to the popular 1999 PC RTS Homeworld. The game's single player campain tells the story of Kiith Somtaaw, a clan of the eponymous homeworld, Hiigara. The Kiith, an unremarkable group composed mostly of space miners, is forced to become their planet's main line of defence against a bio-technological enemy known as "The Beast.". "The Beast" is an entity capable of controlling electronic equipment and flesh alike, something a team of researchers happened to stumble across while in close proximity to the Kiith miners. Throughout the campaign, Somtaaw upgrades their mining mothership, the Kuun-Lan, into a full-fledged vessel of war with a wide assortment of modules and weaponry, all in the effort to stop The Beast once and for all.
Homeworld: Cataclysm is, like its predecessor, an RTS game taking place in outer space. In order for this to function well, the game allows you to not only rotate the camera in every direction possible, but also to zoom in and out to the extreme, as well as access a kind of tactical-overview map. After this it is a simple matter of controlling your units with the usual select and right-click to move, holding a button of your choice to choose height and debt, as well as choosing formations of your selected units through a small and easily accessed sub-menu. Upgrading, just like combat, is done by quick-buttons and the mouse, enabling a new player to handle it well and an experienced player to use the extensive options to his or her benefit. While there is a unit cap, the space battles will still vary around small skirmishes of fighters, to large and more or less epic-scaled battles between cruicers, though the battles will never throw away tactics in favour of bigger numbers.
In multiplayer as with skirmish, players can play as either Somtaaw or The Beast. The Somtaaw vessels were designed specifically for Cataclysm, wheras The Beast's fleet is comprised of "infected" (palette swapped) versions of ships from the original Homeworld and Somtaaw's fleet. A decent amount of maps are avaliable with good variety, and the balance between the two factions has been deemed well enough.
As the Kiith Somtaaw, it is your mission to guide your mining vessle, the Kuun-Lan against a menacing threat called only The Beast. You must turn your regular mining clan into a fully battle-ready fleet through a storydriven campaign using a mixture of upgrades, tactics, resource gathering and research.
