The graphical style of Hotel Dusk stands out amongst most games. The characters of the game appear as detailed pencil drawings pasted over colored backgrounds, and are animated in a sketchy fashion for a unique and stylish look. When moving around the hotel, players are put into first person perspective on the top screen, and use the stylus on the bottom screen map to navigate the halls. Talking to a character puts Kyle on one screen and the character he is speaking with on the other screen. Characters react differently according to the questions Kyle asks and the statements he makes, and convey emotions quite effectively. The style contributes greatly to the noir mystery setting of the game, and excels in building the game's atmosphere.
Hotel Dusk was very well-received by critics, but failed to perform well as far as sales go. The highest point of praise was the game's dialogue and story. Alex Navarro of GameSpot said "...the characters that populate the hotel aren't just half-written caricatures, strictly designed to move the plot forward. These people have layers to them--legitimate character depth that shines through with each passing conversation." It was in the top ten best-selling DS titles for one month, but quickly moved back down. It was later re-released and reprinted under Nintendo's "Touch Generation" label. Like many other adventure games, Hotel Dusk is now considered to be a cult classic for the Nintendo DS.

There are also moments when Kyle is determined to get to the truth, and enters an interrogation-style mode. Plot
In December 1979, Kyle Hyde, a former cop, goes to a mysterious hotel to look for his missing friend, Bradley, whom he shot three years beforehand. The hotel, called Hotel Dusk is a mysterious place with even more mysterious guests. Each guest has a story to tell, and a secret they hold, which (to Kyle's great fortune) all lead him to Bradley. Kyle comes across a number of interesting people, including the Hotel's owner Dunning Smith, a punk kid named Angel, an old friend Louie DeNonno, and a mysterious mute girl named Mila. Kyle is staying in room 215, named "Wish" for the mysterious way it grants peoples wishes. Will Kyle's wish be granted? The game has multiple endings depending on various things (mostly the way the player answers or asks questions). If Kyle says something out of line, his story will end immediately.Gameplay
Players take on the role of Kyle Hyde in a first-person perspective. Gameplay is traditional "point and click" adventure fare, with various puzzles along the way. Most of the puzzles involve using the unique functions of the DS system to solve. Turning a key with the stylus, blowing away dust with the microphone, etc. The game is played by holding the DS on its side, like a notebook, and using the stylus to move and interact with objects and characters.Throughout the game, Kyle must interact with other hotel guests to uncover vital information. The game is full of touch screen puzzles and events, where Kyle must interact with his environment to progress. Among the simplest of the puzzles include basic brainteasers, such as those found in another DS adventure, Professor Layton. Along with puzzles, Kyle will need to be dexterous to pick locks and carry out tasks carefully.
