In addition to the release date they've announced that if you buy the game on Steam you'll get DLC for Payday 2. If you buy the standard edition you get 6 Hotline Miami 2 masks to play with in Payday 2 and if you buy the deluxe edition of HLM2 you get to play as Jacket in Payday 2 in addition to those masks.

"But I live in Australia!". Well Overkill have agreed that if you buy HLM2 (which you can do from GoG and Humble Bundle DRM free) you can send them an email to "info(at)overkillsoftware(dot)com" with the subject line “Australian Heister calling in” with a scan of your passport or ID that identifies you as an Australian.

The DLC is not just for pre-orders and will always unlock when you buy HLM2 and you own Payday 2.

@hellerphant: Probably not VPN since I think Steam permanently associates your account with the country it was created in but a gift will work. You could also just buy it on gog.

It doesn't seem to be available on GOG. I live in Australia. I don't really want to pirate it, because I want to give the devs my money. Any other ways of buying it?

Just pre-ordered through the Humble Store, seems to have worked just fine. Also at least if Steam doesn't activate the key, I have a DRM free version too.

I got it just now through Humble. The GOG site gave me a 404 for the game. Here's hoping Humble does not screw us over by not unlocking the game for us on release day. I kind of expect them to to be honest, but I hope I'm wrong.

Also the GOG reasoning they gave in their news article on this sounds really stupid when you read it carefully. Makes it sound like our ban affects everyone globally somehow and they had to make some high-road call to sacrifice the few for the many. Looks like nonsense.

Weird. That game was banned here too way back when I would have thought.

Oh wait all I had to do was click the button "add to cart" LOL my mistake. Just bought it. That exchange rate though...

It was, yet GOG is selling it in Aus, which shows that a game being banned doesn't actually affect them and that it's not a moral thing either.
