The player controls a red car racing against a field of blue cars in a multi-stage race. A constantly depleting fuel gauge serves as a time limit for each stage. A minimum rank is also required to progress. The car starts out in low gear and can be shifted into high gear by releasing the accelerator for a brief moment once the car is above a minimum speed.
Additional challenges come in the form of tunnel and night stages that obscure the edges of the road and snow stages that make it harder to change direction.
Hyper Rally was included in Konami Antiques - MSX Collection Vol. 3 with the title changed to Konami Rally, possibly due to a trademark conflict with Harvest One's Hyper Rally for PlayStation.
A PlayStation sequel titled Konami Rally was announced at E3 1999 but was subsequently cancelled. International Rally for the Game Boy Color was also initially planned as a sequel with the title Konami Hyper Rally before being rebranded.
