I Am Alive is Ubisoft's entry into the survival-horror genre. The game takes place in Chicago, after the city is ravaged by an earthquake and puts you in the shoes of Adam Collins. The game was first shown at E3 2008, and outside of the false rumor that Assassin's Creed Producer Jade Raymond would be working on I Am Alive, very little is known about the title. The game takes inspiration from the disaster-movie genre which has rarely been explored in gaming.
A man runs through the shell of a collapsed building, short of breath but not wanting to stop. He trips and falls to the ground allowing his pursuers to surround him. From his bag the man drops a bottle of water and the crowd around him scramble for ownership.
I Am Alive has been in development for 3 years and will take place in Chicago (whether partly or fully is unknown). Throughout the game, your main mission will be tracking down your girlfriend, who Adam looses contact with following the earthquake. Your other goal will be to gather together enough survivors to gain the attention of the government rescue teams.
Three other characters have been revealed so far. Riley, a female doctor determined to save as many people as possible. Virgil, an African-American former soldier trying to protect the group of survivors and Peter, a disabled ex-fire captain who was responsible for setting up the refugee camp.
The producers have revealed that there are "mysteries" surrounding the cause of the earthquake which will be revealed throughout the story. The game will be in first person view, in order to achieve more immersion with greater emotion and to allow you to witness first-hand the city collapsing around you. There will be weapons, but they are rare. You will have to find them, and they can be used to scare other people, such as looters; even with an empty shotgun if they don't realise that it's not loaded. You can use this to intimidate and approach them safely while you progress to your objective. You can only aim at one person at a time, so you have to be careful not to get flanked.
The game encourages you to use tactics, diversions, and discretion. It is also encouraged to avoid violent groups as much as possible, as confronting them is rarely rewarded.
Their refugee camp is where you will discover where to go next and where survivors will gather to share food and sleep safely. The objectives will revolve around the camp, at least from time-to-time. Water can be used to heal yourself, as well as to distract others. The story of the game takes place over the course of nine days.
