Okay guys, so I downloaded the game today and it was extremely hard.
I was wondering if anyone here on GiantBomb managed to finish game before punching your computer screen.
I Wanna Be The Guy
Game » consists of 0 releases. Released Oct 13, 2007
I Wanna Be The Guy is an indie game known for its incredible difficulty and many references to popular games, such as Metroid, Mega Man, and Castlevania.
Has anybody here completed this?
Haven't played it yet. Probably don't plan to...
I'm getting frustrated enough with Spelunky.
I beat it. Easily the most intense and exhilarating game I've ever played, I love it. I will also admit that I am insane :P
I beat it on Normal around a year or two ago, it is brutal and only gets harder as it goes along. Beating The Guy probably took me 5 hours of trying over and over
" @eroticfishcake said:Someone should get on making a procedrually generated I Wanna Be The game." Haven't played it yet. Probably don't plan to...Spelunky is a much, much bigger bitch, since it's all random. "

After Super Meat Boy, I can't go back to IWTBTG. I just get frustrated with the stupid animation that comes up and makes you press r to respawn whenever you die. Just make it instantaneous God damn it! I made it to the fourth screen once, and that was enough of an accomplishment for me.
" YesMedium.... that doesn't count! You have a bow on and there's save points everywhere.
"
I'm working on it, just beat Giant Mike Tyson. On hard (Which is the default setting).
Lol I'm really glad there's even a page on GB for this game. So random. I just beat it. Let's just say I punched the shit out of my pillow next to me on my way to being the guy. Contemplating if I wanna be the Boshy next (probably not, as I already hate myself so much for being the guy).

@Unknown_PleasuresYou make it sound as thigh that trivializes the game's difficulty.@Hailinel said:
@Unknown_PleasuresYour point? Its just a lot of trial and error
That the game consists of a lot of trial and error......like I said in my previous post.
It does. It can't really be a fair challenge if you have no real way of reacting to these challenges without failing them first.
That's the point.@Hailinel said:

Except that's exactly the way that many well regarded, classic games work. To succeed, the player must engage in trial and error while learning patterns and mastering the actions required.

For me, the challenge comes in being able to get through the level even after you know exactly what to do. There's alot of timing and spacing in terms of how you have to platform in order to finish a level. I felt like the trial and error part was the game designer just straight up trolling me in some pretty funny ways (in hindsight).
@Hailinel:
Then the question becomes twofold:
- Do these games deserve the praise piled upon them?
- If so, what about them works that is not present in I Wanna Be the Guy?

The ones that are good do. Ikaruga doesn't get its praise by accident.
IWBTG is a special case. It is designed specifically to baffle the player through intentionally ludicrous design. It's an example of the masocore movement; games designed with the intent to be severely punishing in their difficulty, largely through new takes on old game design.

I think it does......I believe that the average gamer could beat IWBTG if he put the time into it because the game consists of several save points located fairly close together......so while some parts are difficult, the game doesn't really punish you by pushing you back that far so you can simply try the same part over again in quick succession until you finally get it, usually taking more luck than skill.....for this reason it is my opinion that the difficulty of IWBTG is overrated, its not an easy game even with the save points close together, but I think its manageable for most people......same goes with Super Meat Boy, the difficulty may be high for a single level, but dying yields very little punishment and its just trial and error till you beat the level.....I earned 100% in Super Meat Boy, but I don't think I have the skill to beat a game like Ninja Gaiden Black on Master Ninja difficulty because something like that takes a lot more skill rather than simple trial and error......Furthermore, I don't believe the average gamer could beat a game like Ghosts 'N Goblins because your mistakes cost you more progress and you have limited lives to beat the game.
I'm not saying that I'm right that's just how I look at things, its my opinion.

@Unknown_Pleasures: Have you ever played it with the save points turned off?
Nope, but the game was not designed to be played without save points......I'm saying that the default intended difficulty is overrated.
I'd beg to differ.
Then we agree to disagree.
