Driving action game, GTA frontrunner

Overview

Interstate '76 takes place  in an "alternative" 1976 in which the 1973 gas crisis has deepened to the point of chaos. Criminals with heavily armed muscle cars are wreaking havoc in the American southwest, and it's up to you and a few other auto-vigilantes to stop them. Game structure consists of a series of missions in which you, as the hero Groove Champion, with the help of your friends Taurus and Skeeter, must track down the evil auto-villain who killed your sister. The game has a very cinematic feel to it, from the opening scenes until the end credits roll, drawing comparisons to the cinematic feel that Wing Commander had on its release. The cars, the clothes, the music, the language, and every other aspect of the game closely resemble the 1970s TV shows from which it was inspired.

There are over 25 missions to drive through as an auto mercenary. There is a fairly wide range of missions, with plot twists and changing objectives adding to the variety. You get to use gun-laden muscle cars. You can configure your car exactly how you want it (choose the paint-job, the weapons, the tyres and tons more), and have about 40 vehicles to choose from (including a school bus and an ice cream van). In each mission you have to destroy or disable some enemy cars at some point, which you can do by ramming them, shooting them, dropping breeze blocks, oil and mines or if all else fails driving along side them and capping the driver in the head. This was the one of the first games in which you could fire a gun in first person out of a car, much like in the game Quarantine. There are also racing and stunt elements in many of the missions.

Music

The game has an excellent soundtrack composed by Arion Salazar of 'Third Eye Blind' and performed under the band name 'Bullmark'. Every track captures the same 1970s funky vibe of the game and its settings.

Legacy

  • As it didn't support hardware 3D accelleration "out of the box", a patch was developed for owners of then-expensive 3D add on cards. This patch was later bundled with future releases and compilations of the game (Interstate '76: Gold Edition and Interstate '76: Arsenal).
  • An expansion pack titled, "Interstate '76: Nitro Pack" was released, showing the events leading up to the introduction in Interstate '76. A stand alone was later released titled, "Interstate '76: Nitro Riders".
  • Interstate '82, a true sequel taking place six years after Interstate '76, was also released in 1999.
  • Both Vigilante 8 and Vigilante 8: Second Offense are spin offs from Interstate '76. Convoy, one of the characters from Vigilantie 8 appears in the intro for Interstate '76: Nitro Pack.
