James Gordon, also known as Commissioner Gordon, is the Police Commissioner of Gotham City. Despite Batman's dubious methods of law enforcement, Gordon cooperates and assists him, allowing his crusade on crime to proceed unabated.

He was one of the first companions that Batman had. James Gordon is the police commissioner of Gotham City and he shares the same passion for fighting crime that Batman does. While he was a truly devoted friend to Batman in the past, more modern comic stories have made him question whether or not he should be friends with a vigilante. Even though there is this uneasy tension between them, they respect each other greatly. One common aspect between Batman and Gordon is that often when they meet, Batman would have quietly left the scene leaving before Gordon notices or before he is finished talking. The daughter of James Gordon, Barbara Gordon, is unknowingly to him, Batgirl.
