Jax is a special forces agent and partner to Sonya Blade. Together they are Earth's response to the threat of annihilation that the Mortal Kombat tournament represents.
Chronologically, Jax was first introduced in Mortal Kombat II. In the third game he has robotic arms, but the reason for this is not explained. Mortal Kombat: Special Forces attempts to explain that this is his way to enhance his abilities, and a comic book adaptation suggests that Baraka damaged Jax's arms and Jax would need bionic implants to help regain the use of them. The constant suggestion of Jax's enhancement, even before he obviously has bionic arms, may stem from his super-human moves, such as the ground pound, although one's arms are only as good as one's back-- further enhancements to Jax's back or other areas to support his arms are not usually discussed.
