I think this originated back when Jeff and the rest of the Bomb Squad were back at Gamespot, but I remember Jeff owning the domain name "jeffgerstmannpumpsgas.com." The only thing on the site was a picture of Jeff pumping gas into his car. I really want to find that picture, but it disappeared from the internet. The site isn't on archive.org and I get nothing from google searching. Does anybody know where I can find that picture?

I'm sure if you ask nicely, Ryan can take a picture of Jeff next time they're at a gas station. I like girls, you like dudes pumping gas. I don't judge.

Speaking of pictures you can't find on the internet. Remember that console that never came out? the Phantom. It had a really nice piece of wallpaper that was black with a silver logo in the middle. I used that as a desktop wallpaper back in 2004 or something and for nostalgia I'd like to have it again, but can't find it anymore since they closed down the site many years ago.

I've always wondered why they call petrol gas over there. It would make huge sense if it were actually a gas, but it's a liquid. Also even if there is a perfectly good reason to call it gas, wouldn't it get confusing sometimes when trying to differentiate between the gas used in your hob and the gas used in your car? Say you wanted a can of gas. Now, do you mean you want a petrol can, or a gas can?

@Obinice: If we called it petrol, people would get it mixed up with patron, and can you imagine how terrible that would be? We in the Americas like to play it safe.

A hob is the top part of a stove, the part you put your pans onto. You store gas in a gas can for use in portable stoves, fireplaces, etc. They tend to look like this.

Hmm so here's some interesting facts the internet/wiki dug up for me. Propane gas is a by-product of natural gas, and it's used for portable stoves, etc. However the gas you get pumped into your homes is natural gas. I did not know there was a difference between the gas in a gas can and the gas in my home! Wow.

    Gas is short for gasoline.

I think like many languages, the definition of what is being used has to come from the context, but in the case of gas in a "hob" we typically say propane, which I think most Americans would understand is a fossil fuel used to power portable stoves or barbecues.

If someone told me they had a gas-powered stove at home, I would understand from the context that it would probably be a natural gas stove.

@Obinice: We also avoid calling propane hob because that would cause confusion when we call someone a hob-knocker.
