Jet Force Gemini is third-person shooter for the Nintendo 64 developed by Rare.
Overview
Jet Force Gemini is third-person shooter for the Nintendo 64 developed by Rare. The game is primarily a third person shooter however it also contains a high degree of platforming elements due to its puzzles and a shift away from linear level development towards one that encouraged exploration much in the same way it was encouraged in other Rare produced games such as Banjo Kazooie. Also common to platform games and generally considered a trademark of Rare games at the time, was the sheer amount of collectible items in the game. This was also considered one of the games weak points. As well as an extensive single player campaign Jet Force Gemini also offered some mulitplayer modesGameplay
Jet Force Gemini's structure was similar to that of a platform game in that the levels were not so much about getting from point A to point B but instead relied heavily on exploration and collection of items to either aid the player or allow for further progression. While the games early levels are mostly trying to get from one point to the other there are a few situations where you can take different paths. Later on in the game you were able to visit each planet with any of the available characters who's different abilities allowed access to different areas on each world. The player also discovers that in order to progress through the game they would have to save every single tribal in the game making it very similar to other 3D platformers at the time. In a sense the games map of the universe acted as a hub world for the locations in the game.Storyline
The game starts with Gemini squadron (Juno, Vela and their trusty dog Lupus) in orbit of the planet Goldwood when they witness an attack upon the the planets native population, a bear like race called tribals. The attackers are the drones of space tyrant Mizar, who sees Goldwood as a valuable resource and the tribals as slaves and easily dispatched if need be. Frustrated at the inaction of their government who believe that Mizar is not a threat the Gemini squadron head towards the planet, splitting off into separate paths. Upon landing Juno is greeted by King Jeff, the leader of the tribals who shows him that Mizar is systematically invading planets and seems to have almost an infinite army. It soon becomes apparent that Mizar wants more than Goldwood's surrounding planets but wants to control the entire universe including the destruction of Earth. With the federation ignoring the threat only the Gemini squadron are left to save Earth.Characters
Juno
Juno's desire to join the army was largely sparked by the murder of his parents at the hand of Mizar's drones. His anger at the Federation's inactions towards Mizar causes him to take action against Mizar whithout orders. In the game Juno has the unique ability to walk through lava without suffering damage.
Vela holding the Tri-Rocket Gun Vela

Lupus
The final member of the Gemini squadron, lupus is a loyal dog outfitted with a gun mount. He is cybernetically engineered to increase canine intelligence. Equipped with hover boots and later a small tank, Lupus is able to hover for short amounts of time.Floyd
One of Mizar's flying drones that is so advanced it begins to develop a personality and starts to oppose Mizar's ruthless actions. He is found split up into pieces as punishment for his betrayal. Once the player rescues him the player can take part in a series of Floyd mini-games or a second player can control Floyd's laser turrets to assist player one.King Jeff
The leader of the tribal race and blessed with magic powers King Jeff's assistance to the Gemini team proves to be very valuable.Mizar
A ruthless space tyrant who's seemingly endless drone army threatens the entire universe.Multiplayer Modes
Single Player (limited co-op)
The single player campaign could be played cooperatively once the player rescues Floyd. From that point on another player can control Floyd's gun turrets but not his movements.Battle Mode
The standard deathmatch option of Jet force Gemini. While the matches could not be customised as heavily as game like Goldeneye, it did allow a few weapon choices and game scoring modes based on time, number of kills or number of lives.Target Practice Mode
This mode is essentially an on rails shooter where the players controlled a cross hair and were taken through a set path on a course where they had to shoot at targets of drones and avoid targets of tribals.Racing Mode
A simple arcade type racing game that is unlocked as a multiplayer option once the mini-game has been completed in the single player campaign.Reception
Jet Force Gemini mostly received fairly high reviews however the most common complaint was both the difficulty of the game which was considered to be very difficult and the point where the player is told that in order to progress through the game they had to save every single tribal. Many players did not continue playing after this part of the game.
