Prior to creating Mystery Science Theater 3000, he was a stand-up comedian whose routine achieved recognition on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. He served as host on MST3K until 1993, when he left to pursue other projects, and hosting duties were taken over by head writer Michael J. Nelson. Has since started Cinematic Titanic, a live tour that riffs on movies in the same way MST3K did.

- In 2013, he brought back the MST3K tradition of "Turkey Day", where he hosted a livestream of several classic MST3K episodes on YouTube.
