Joey Claire is the main protagonist of Hiveswap. The 14-year-old daughter of Jake Harley and A. Claire, she lives with her younger brother Jude Harley in Half-Harley Manor. Due to their mother's death and father's near-abandonment, the two mostly live by themselves, looked after only by their babysitter. She has a passion for ballet and tap dancing, and adores animals.
Hiveswap: Act 1
On November 11, 1994, Joey and Jude are attacked by monsters while playing in their garden. Joey flees to her bedroom, where she uses a walkie-talkie to contact Jude, who is hiding in his treehouse. At Jude's advice to find a more defensible position, she goes downstairs and (after several setbacks and monster encounters) retrieves the key to the manor's attic. With more monsters invading the house, she makes her way back upstairs and into the attic, accidentally trapping herself inside after dropping the key. In the attic, she finds a mysterious device, which is activated by a key Joey found in her mother's belongings. The device reveals itself to be some sort of portal, which forcibly sucks Joey inside.
On the other side of the portal, a confused Joey finds a tablet and gets into contact with Xefros Tritoh. She finds out that she has been transported to a planet called Alternia, inhabited by an alien species called trolls and their monster-like guardians called lusii, and is trapped in the hive (troll vernacular for "house") of Dammek, the leader of a rebel group of which Xefros is a member. After escaping, she befriends Dammek's lusus and goes to help Xefros, who has been trapped under a pile of rubble after his hive was bombed on the Alternian empress's orders. Together, they ride on Dammek's lusus away from the continuing bombings, in search of a friend and fellow rebel.
