Kaiju is the Japanese term for monster or strange beasts, commonly associated with giant monsters such as Godzilla. Kaiju appear as enemies in games, but just as often they are controlled by the player.

    Overview

Giant monsters in the movies have been a key source of inspiration for many games. From Godzilla to King Kong and of course Giant Enemy Crabs, kaiju films have found themselves referenced or imitated in a variety of ways.

One of the earliest examples of a kaiju themed game is the arcade classic Rampage, in which monsters reminiscent of King Kong and Godzilla were playable, as well as a giant wolf.
