Katawa Shoujo is a free-to-download dating sim visual novel from Four Leaf Studios. It stands out a bit from other entries in the genre in that the girls in the game all have a disability of some sort.

Argh, I be a pirate! Oh, and a visual novel connoisseur.

I think the main reason most people are putting this game in such high context is that it is A) completely fan made for free, and B) likely the first visual novel they've ever played. I enjoyed it immensely but I won't say its the best thing I've ever read, I do put it up there due to how it was made though.
