Keith Courage in Alpha Zones is a side-scrolling action adventure game that served as the pack-in game for the TurboGrafx-16.
B.A.D., the Beastly Alien Dudes (no kidding), have invaded Earth & burrowed into the ground, causing much havoc. Keith is a member of N.I.C.E., Nations of International Citizens for Earth (but of course), & was tasked with the job of ridding Earth of B.A.D. Starting to sound like the inspiration for Halo yet? Didn't think so.
The game consists of 7 stages that have an overworld and underworld for the player to traverse. The overworld is where Keith would talk to a few friends like the Prophet who warned of danger ahead (no kidding), the Wise Wizard who sold bombs, & Nurse Nancy who healed your wounds for a price. There were also a few enemies to deal with like flying pots and spinning cats that fell from the sky. The Weapons Master also let you upgrade your sword, for a price, to use in the underwold level ahead. When you reached the end of the overworld you jumped on a platform & a rainbow transported you to the underworld.
The underworld is where things got interesting. You are in an armored suit called the Nova Suit. You also got to use your upgraded sword and bombs to fight a variety of enemies. The underworld had you mostly going from side to side & sometimes vertically to get to the end where the boss waited. You would jump down a hole in the ground to get into the boss's chamber where the fight would commence. The bosses ranged from easy to impossible to defeat. That's right impossible. The last boss not be defeated with your weapons. That is unless you used the hidden easter egg cheat!
At the hole to get to the final boss if you jumped straight in he would come alive and quickly commence to killng you. However, if you jump to the other side of the hole and then fall to the far left off the ledge and into the pit, the boss will not move at all. It will simply stand there and allow you to hack it to death. That's one BAD alien for ya!
Roll credits, game over. Literally that was the end.
In issue 66 of Retro Gamer in an article about the history of Hudson, the game was listed as one of their games to miss.
A scrolling action game developed by Hudson, it was the pack-in title for the TurboGrafx-16 system.
