I'm playing the career and I seem to have hit a bit of a wall, I've done all the contracts I can which don't involve reaching orbit, but now all the ships I build that seem capable of orbit are too heavy for the Launch Pad.

It's also entirely possible that I'm missing something completely obvious.

On the screen where you can see your entire complex, if you right click on the launchpad, you can upgrade it via that pop-up. The same is true of the rest of the buildings etc.
