8 Million Kinects Sold

#1 Edited by kives34 (96 posts) -

Well it looks like it was a success in terms of sales now. Also at CES Microsoft announced there are now 50 million Xbox 360's sold and 30 million XBL members. Also Sony has 60 Million PSN members!
#2 Posted by klandathu (42 posts) -

What does it mean to be a PSn member, i have multiple accounts on my machine, are each of those considered a psn member?
#3 Posted by Hot_Karl (3309 posts) -

Yeah, it's definitely a big success. Sounds about right, it's an add-on for a console that plenty of people have already, you don't need to buy extra controllers or anything like you would for the PS3 or Wii, it comes with a game and everything you need for $150. And it was promoted as the hot toy of the holiday season. Good on Microsoft. That thing has a ton of problems still, but good on them for selling a big ol' box of potential.

Well now they have to keep supporting it, hopefully in the right way though. Who will ever use Avatar Kinect??
#5 Posted by Ragdrazi (2283 posts) -

Bill Gates bought 7 million of those.

#6 Posted by RobotHamster (4156 posts) -

I'm pretty sure I read it was 8 million shipped not sold.

#7 Posted by RecSpec (3681 posts) -

The Kinect sales are good, but not all of those are people buying them to play games.
People out there are doing some really cool stuff with the device.

No. Sadly not.

The world is an icky place to be.

I believe each one counts??? I am not positive though.
#12 Posted by p_p_o_d (542 posts) -

microsft did a good job selling kinect.

$500 million marketing budget + Oprah = sales.

#13 Posted by EvilTwin (3324 posts) -

That is fucking unreal.  They've almost sold a fifth of their user base on Kinect in 60 days.  I can't say I'm pleased, but maybe this is incentive for developers to actually make something interesting for it.

so on the video it looked like there was recognition of the fingers, i wonder if thats accurate

Just goes to show that Microsoft's investment of $500 million into the marketing and advertising budget for Kinect has paid off.

#17 Posted by adoggz (1953 posts) -

Great! Now hopefully we will see continued developer support.

#18 Posted by kingofpeanuts (478 posts) -
@Hamz: think what they lost on the 600 million Win phone marketing budget. Just 2 million shipped, not sold.
#19 Posted by kives34 (96 posts) -
@Hamz:
Ya, but I wonder if they have made a profit yet...
#20 Posted by Hamz (6845 posts) -

I'm now interested to see if Microsoft will be pushing for all games published and/or developer internally to include Kinect support as a standard feature.

#21 Posted by ch13696 (4582 posts) -

I'll ask the same thing that I asked when the Wii reached that milestone...

And how many of those people actually still use it after the first month?

ohgod ohgod ohgod ohgod ohgod ohgod ohgod ohgod people buying a family friendly device on my MATURE, ADULT, HARD-KORE, PORNOGRAPHIC system, how gross and icky. MY WORLD IS CRASHING AROUND ME!

Pornographic? Wha?

Hey, what else goes with adult and HARDKORE? That's right...pornography. Nothing is more adult and hardcore than hardcore adult films.

I hope not for this generation at least, it is an accessory for a console that is a huge hit but 8/50 million does not, to me mean they need to mandate support

Another Oprah top-seller.

Yes.  I have one for U.S. and Japan, both count.  It's not a very good statistic for determining the activity or success of PSN.   And, having a PSN doesn't mean activity on it, whereas Microsoft count of Gold XBL members is a good indicator of activity.

As far as Kinect, I'm not surprised how easily people have bought into the product.  Personally, it's gotta do a heck of a lot more before I even consider it.  No matter how nice Dance Central looks, it's not worth $200 just to play a single game.

I can't believe it sold 8 million units; i would like to know how well move did

still, 8m? thats big and in that amount of time too, and 50m 360s globally

impressive numbers, more than i thought, hope they follow or developers follow with good games

@RockAction:
I think there will be more intergration into games rather then make new games for it.

i doubt it. I don't think they are stupid enough to force kinect where it doesn't fit.

RIP Move

#33 Posted by p_p_o_d (542 posts) -

guy from Bloomberg talked to a guy at MS after the show.   http://twitter.com/dinabass

its 8 million shipped to stores but MS say they have beat there 5 million sold to customers estimate.   its just PR being PR.

still HUGE numbers tho... and more and more I am afraid for the future of gaming... I dont wanna waggle. :(

Hopefully, if thats the case then i'd probably buy one, if i had that kind of money lying around (better spent on a ps3 personally) i'd get one if it had integration, even subtle things, but if its more immersive it would be beneficial

i dont think so, maybe in sales numbers so far, but if anything this really shows that Wii wasn't a fad and motion gaming is a large part of contemporary gaming and gaming in the future, so these numbers benefit everyone really - well maybe not hardcore, but thats just until a good developer really uses it well, or uses it as integration rather than immediate control

Better than the $400m they put into WP7.  I swear I'm seeing more and moer Bing and WP7 advertisement in TV shows.  It's getting f'n annoying.
#39 Posted by Jadeskye (4359 posts) -

Well they put them into the hands of their userbase, thats for damn sure. Now all we need for innovative and GOOD games to come out for it and they've got the world by the balls.

Two words: Dance Central

Always count on Harmonix. I do hope some more great games come soon though. Can't play DC forever, afterall.

psn accounts made on psp count too. and believe it or not theyre are tonnnns of people doing that

That's an insane number of Kinect sold, shipped or not. A lot of people were rolling their eyes when Microsoft said they will sell 5 million. Looks like they're right on their mark or going further that, depending if those were shipped or not.
