So, Erm, Natal Doesn't Work When You Sit Down

The attraction of Natal (Kinect, whatever) for me was the laziness it introduced. Honestly, couldn't give a shit about the games they showed but the dance one. But, erm, y'know the interface stuff -- yeah, apparently it only works when you're standing up.

From IGN [via GAF]:

Right now, Kinect only works when you stand. This includes menu navigation. All the cool options to grab a slider and advance through frames of a movie you are watching only work when you are on your feet. Kinect, we've been told, has problems handling your skeletal frame while sitting. The voice commands still work, but every game we've seen and even simple menu navigation have to be done with you out of your seat. That's not exactly how I want to watch my movies. If the focus for Kinect is creating games like Dance Central that naturally would require you to be off your couch, that's great. But I have to say, no one thinks "I am driving a car!" while standing up in their living room.

Oh dear...

Real people live in rooms full of furniture, not empty gyms, and I wonder if MS considered that at all during product testing.

It does seem like you need to live in a warehouse to get it going, you're right. I barely have room to swing the Wii remote around.

In response to the thread though, they have to fix the sitting down thing right? I mean, come on - really?!

So I can't sit down to pet my Kinectimals? :(
#7 Posted by FireBurger (1479 posts) -

Well, that's interesting. If I got the Kinect it would be for games rather than the interface stuff anyway, but that blows. Combined with the fact that there aren't any compelling games, I'm going with the Move.

You can only pet animals while standing up, duh.
#9 Posted by Wraith1 (576 posts) -

well that sucks, I'm in a wheelchair so I can't use it

#10 Edited by FizzleNizzleBear (335 posts) -

They'll most likely fix it before launch

#11 Posted by Green_Incarnate (1791 posts) -

This seems crazy, if true. Huge oversight on Microsoft.

Hmm, I thought the idea was to capture the casual market and I assume some of that demographic could include the elderly.  I'm going to bet we don't see many news shows airing reports of just how much grandma loves her Kinected 360.   Also, people in wheelchairs aren't going to buy this thing either, it would seem.

I would say I agree with this. Purely because it would be a commercial DISASTER if they didn't.

Varicose vein city!!

seems like something that must be fixed that sounds pretty shitty

Utter Nonsense. Right, Mr. Bigglesworth?

OMG, that's bad...

#18 Posted by Cube (4366 posts) -

I dunno I thought this was pretty common knowledge, Kinect has some blatant weaknesses and you can see how it wouldn't work for lots of genres.

#19 Posted by Metal_Mills (3046 posts) -

So I have to play Forza standing up? I need to stand just to change a setting on a movie? LOLOL oh wow. Oh wow. This is so fucked...Microsoft you fools.

#20 Posted by WinterSnowblind (7617 posts) -

I think they key words there are right now

The whole point of Kinect is that you use your whole body to play your games, you don't just flail your arms.  With the exception of perhaps racing games and navigating the dashboard, you've have to be standing up anyway.

I... erm... how... but... what?

This made me laugh.

@WinterSnowblind: You're right. It does say "right now" implying that's going to change. However, the product releases in - what? - 5 months. They announced this thing 12 months ago and were probably playing with it 6 months before that (probably more). Let's just be kind and say they've been working on it for 18 months -- they never in that time thought it was something they should fix? And, now, 5 months before release, they are just getting round to it? Come on dude, they should have wrapped this up months ago.

While I agree with you, the experience is meant to be full-body motion, as a UI it's completely dead if you can't use it sitting down. This also kills the dream of games controlled mainly with the 360 controller and some Natal interaction on top.

Well, apparently not too well either. According to the same IGN article:

In more than a few demos, Kinect didn't always understand what people were saying. And these were folks without accents and in rooms without a lot of echo or noise. Kinect has a setting for audio that measures the amount of ambient noise in your room and filters it out, but until we can field test it, it's impossible to know how well this works. Accents are a bigger concern. We've been told the "hope" is that accents are not an issue. Maybe Microsoft can enlist Ubisoft for help, because EndWar used voice commands and did an excellent job accounting for accents.

You know there is going to be masturbating and sex videos of that yoga fire guy.

Well, at least it finally works for black people. That's something.

KINECT PORN  !!!
#29 Edited by JJWeatherman (14569 posts) -

In the video, a dude was sitting and navigating. Of course that could have been simulated, but it's obviously something they are working towards even if it's not yet quite right.

#30 Posted by Kyelb22 (294 posts) -

Because everybody knows that standing while watching movies is the ways things are done nowadays.

#31 Posted by Scooper (7881 posts) -

Hey guys guess what Kinect is going to blow ass and be even more casual then anyone ever thought the Wii was/could be.

#32 Posted by NekuSakuraba (7184 posts) -

THE GIRL ON THE RIGHT, SHE BE SITTING AND USING KINECT? WITCHERY I TELL YOU, WITCHERY!!!
#33 Posted by Gav47 (1542 posts) -

I'm sure they are working on something to make the menus and such work while seated.

#34 Posted by ch13696 (4582 posts) -

So the problem with the Wii-mote is that it doesn't work from a distance (maybe some other problems too) thanks to the sensor bar. The problem with Kinect is that it won't work while sitting down (didn't they preview a chic messing with it while sitting down last year?). Has anyone noticed any problems with the Playstation Move?

#35 Edited by Kung_Fu_Viking (717 posts) -

Makes sense. If you think about how Kinect gathers it's 3D data if you're sitting down whilst facing the camera your upper legs are not able to be detected so Kinect has no idea what is going on.

EDIT: Which, as an aside, is the reason why motion capture studios use multiple cameras to capture the input data so that if certain joints are occluded from one angle another can pick it up.

Hahahahahahahahaha. No. They never would have shown it to the public this way if they could fix it.
#37 Posted by Eaxis (958 posts) -

Should this be something heavily obese people are required to do, what about people with disabilities?
#38 Posted by ToadRunner (277 posts) -

Lol, what a piece of shit.

Couches are great, who the fuck wants to stand up for menu navigation?

remotes arent hard to use...

#39 Posted by PhaggyBigNastyMcKill (564 posts) -
@get2sammyb: But we saw the stupid racing game where the girl was sitting down grabbing air like a steering wheel. Surely Microsoft wouldn't lie

i heard that they die if you do that.
#41 Posted by kingclaw (757 posts) -

What about liying on your bed?
Because that´s the way I play videogames

#42 Edited by AndrewB (7689 posts) -

Wow. I honestly don't know what more to say about that. I knew there was going to be a major catch to the tech, and there it is.

I thought the whole multiple cameras thing was supposed to be to catch the depth of the room, including your body?

#43 Posted by 9cupsoftea (651 posts) -

In the presentation kinect tracked that twin;s head movement while she was sitting down. I'm guessing this is a bullshit claim.

#44 Posted by ProfessorEss (7514 posts) -

That's a potential show-stopper if it's not figured out by November.

#45 Posted by Rhaknar (5939 posts) -

whoa... that's a HUGE problem. What the fuck were they thinking

#46 Posted by kmdrkul (3476 posts) -

Personally speaking, not only do I have so much shit in my microscopic studio apartment that I'd barely be able to use Kinect, but I also happen to love sitting down and, in general, just not moving around.  So this doesn't bode well for me and Kinect.

#47 Posted by Jeffsekai (7052 posts) -

I'm over it. The only games I want for it are games I was prepared to stand for anyways.

#48 Posted by sarahsdad (1121 posts) -

also from the article:

" However, several developers giving us demos have said the exact opposite. Sometimes the contradiction comes from the same person--one day telling us you have to be standing and then the next saying everything can be done while sitting."

Since they didn't name anyone, I'm going to be a bit of a dick, and say " OMG, there might have been some miscommunication with a random booth person who was asked 1500 questions in a day and a half. "

Besides that, I'm with Jeffsekai, I'm getting this for the games, most of which will be done standing up anyhow.

#49 Posted by PolyesterPimp (256 posts) -

kinect already lost my money a long time ago. seems like a glorified webcam, ill pass

#50 Edited by The_Laughing_Man (13629 posts) -

I got a question thats been on my mind. Wii and Move have analog stick..but how will you move " Forward back words and side to side" with kentic? How would you navigate in a FPS? Or something like that?
