Overview
Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix is a compilation of an enhanced version of Kingdom Hearts II, called Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix, and a 3D remake of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, called Kingdom Hearts: Re:Chain of Memories. This article will only focus on the changes made to the games. Please refer to the game's respective pages for other details about the games.
The final boss of Sora's path now has an extra form that must be defeated to beat the game, and Riku's path has a new battle that was previously not shown.
If the player has beaten the game once, they will now be able to find cards based on Organization XIII members only appearing in Kingdom Hearts II. Also added was the Reaction Command system, which first made its appearance in Kingdom Hearts II.
Like many other enhanced versions of Square Enix games, Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix features English voices and Japanese text, whereas the original game was entirely in Japanese. Because of the complications of re-hiring the English voice actors, newly added cutscenes were left voiceless during the course of game. They are, however, viewable in Japanese if the player beats the game with a Kingdom Hearts: Re:Chain of Memories clear data savefile on their memory card. Doing so will unlock a Theater Mode option on the menu screen, where all old cutscenes can be viewed in both English and Japanese, and new cutscenes only being viewable in Japanese.
Many new bosses were added. During the course of the game, the player can find a total of four shields in various areas representing Organization XIII members who were killed in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. If the player examines a shield, they will be transported to an arena where they will be able to fight a deceased Organization XIII member. A battle with Roxas in one of the final areas of the game, which was previously only a cutscene, was now made playable too.
A whole new area called Cavern of Remembrance was added to the game, and is accesible from Hollow Bastion. In this cave, the player must use their Drive Forms to the fullest to reach the end, where they will be able to fight powered-up digital copies of all thirteen Organization XIII members. If all Organization XIII members are defeated when the game is beaten, the player will be able to fight an unknown armored knight, later revealed by Tetsuya Nomura to be Terra, by entering a black hole behind the Cornerstone of Light in Disney Castle. If the player beats the game again after beating the knight, they will be treated to a new secret trailer eluding to the events in the upcoming PSP game Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
A very popular new addition was a fourth difficulty mode called Crticial Mode. In this mode, the player's maximum stats are decreases significantly, which in most cases means the player can only take one or two hits from a boss before dying. However, if the player still finds the game too easy, there is a new equipabble ablility exclusive to Critical Mode called "EXP0". When equipped, it stops the player from gaining any experience points, thus making it possible to beat the game with a level 1 character. The player still gains stats upgrades through beating bosses, however, as beating the game with a true level 1 character would be deemed impossible.
A new Drive Form called Limit Form was added. It's the only Drive Form which Sora can use without fusing with any of his party members. Its appearance resembles Sora's outfit in Kingdom Hearts, which directly ties in with its abilities. When using this form, the Magic menu will change into the Limit menu, which contains many of Sora's attacks from previous games, all for which he will recieve some health when using them. The Form's growth ability is Dodge Roll, a very useful ability in the previous games that was cut out/replaced with Quick Run in Kingdom Hearts II.
Two new keyblades can be found in this game. The "Two Across" keyblade is recieved when beating Roxas in The World That Never Was, and is unmissable. The other keyblade called "Winner's Proof" is recieved when all Organization XIII Mushroom Heartless have been defeated, that are scattered all over the game and must be killed in special ways.
Several new tracks were composed by the series' composer Yoko Shimomura to complement the new areas and bosses in the game. They can be found on the ninth and final disc of the Kingdom Hearts Soundtrack Complete Box. Here is a list with all the new tracks with a breakdown of what they were used for:

Like many Square Enix games before it, Kingdom Hearts II also received an upgrade for Japanese audiences packed up with a remake of KH: Chain of Memories.

Soundtrack
Several new tracks were composed by the series' composer Yoko Shimomura to complement the new areas and bosses in the game. They can be found on the ninth and final disc of the Kingdom Hearts Soundtrack Complete Box. Here is a list with all the new tracks with a breakdown of what they were used for:
- What A Surprise?!
The new background theme for Christmas Town, which previously used Halloween Town's background theme. - Happy Holidays!
The new battle theme for Christmas Town, which previously used Halloween Town's battle theme. It is mostly a sped up and remixed version of the background theme of the same area. - The 13th Reflection
The battle theme for all Organization XIII members that were killed in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. - Cavern of Remembrance
The background theme for the Cavern of Remembrance. - Deep Anxiety
The battle theme for the Cavern of Remembrance. - The Other Promise
The battle theme for the boss battle with Roxas. It is a remixed version of Roxas' theme. - Rage Awakened
The battle theme for the battle with the armored knight. - Fate of the Unknown
The background theme for the secret ending movie. This track was orchestrally arranged by Kaoru Wada.
The Gathering
The Gathering is the secret video at the end of Kingdom Hearts II. It is a teaser for the up coming Kingdom Hearts game for the PSP, Birth by Sleep. A longer version can be found at the end of Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix . The Video can be seen by either beating the game on proud difficulty or unlocking everything on the medium difficulty (or, like most people, search for it on youtube)
Additions
Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix boasts numerous additions to the Kingdom Hearts II; even more than the original Final Mix special edition game.- 7 New Boss Battles
You can now fight all of the Organization XIII members absent from the original Kingdom Hearts II, in the form of "Absent Silhouettes." Those who are particularly skilled and clear a certain percent of the game, encounter the "Lingering Spirit" (留まりし思念, Todomarishi Shinen), an optional boss with a design similar to the character Terra from Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
- 10 New Cutscenes
There are several new cutscenes revealing the backstories behind Organization XIII characters, particularly the relationship between Roxas and Axel. In addition, more light is shed on Riku's journey to find Sora and Kairi.
- New Sidequest: Organization XIII Mushrooms
Thirteen optional mushrooms now appear throughout the worlds. To defeat them, you must complete each mushrooms' unique minigame within a short time limit. Each mushroom drops powerful equipment such as new keyblades, staves, and shields for your party.
- New Sidequest: Puzzle Piece Collection
Broken Puzzle Pieces are scattered all over the universe! You can solve all of them to receive rare synthesis items and accessories.
- Theater Mode
After viewing them in the game, you can go back and review all cutscenes in both Japanese and English.
- New Difficulty Level: Critical
The new difficulty level, Critical Mode, leaves you with half your regular HP and incredibly powerful enemies. To cope with these added challenges, you are given 50 AP to begin with in addition to the abilities Reaction Up, Finish Plus, Draw, Luck Up, Luck Up, and MP Hastera. You are also given the Zero EXP ability, which, when equipped, prevents you from gaining any experience from enemies. Sound tough enough? - New Area: Cave of Remembrance
A new hole appears in the Postern, leading to the dangerous Cave of Remembrance. The area is littered with powerful Heartless and numerous useful items. All members of the Organization XIII are also found here, in the "Garden of Assemblage" where they can be fought in their "Final Cut" form created from computer data. These are some of the most powerful bosses in the game, and are difficult to beat even at the highest levels. - New Enemies
Nearly all enemies have receieved recolors, just as in the original Final Mix. In addition, weaker enemies have been balanced to pose a greater challenge. - New Drive Form: Limit Form
Rather than sacrificing one of your friends for boosted abilities and an elaborate costume, you transform alone, without the aid of your friends and regain the classic Kingdom Hearts 1 costume. Most of the Drive form's abilities are borrowed from the original Kingdom Hearts, including Ars Arcanum, Strike Raid, Ragnarok, and Sonic Blade, while giving up the ability to perform Magic. This form requires 4 drive bars to use and gains experience just by performing Limit attacks. In addition to a new Drive form, the Drive gauge has been increased to 9. - New Abilities
- New Synthesis Items
- New Accessories
- New Keyblade: Winner's Proof
This keyblade is almost as difficult to get as the Ultima Weapon; you must clear all of the XIII Mushrooms. Though this is the most powerful magic keyblade with a monstrous stat of 7, it comes with Zero EXP as its keyblade ability, meaning you are unable to gain any experience as long as it is equipped, making it only really useful when you are at level 99. - New Keyblade: Two People Crossing
Though this keyblade has respectable stats, its main use is it's unique ability "Light and Dark." When using "Light and Dark" you have a significantly increased chance of Driving into Final Form or Anti Form. This means that if you are trying to unlock Final Form or intend to use Anti Form on purpose, you should use this keyblade often.
