Kingdoms of Middling Side Quests 12

The minds behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are certainly cultured in the world of fantasy RPGs. Ken Rolston brings his pedigree (and some Bethesda alumni with it) having worked on both The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and its successor, Oblivion; while accomplished fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore breathes life into the world of Amalur, creating a 10,000 year history for the developers at Big Huge Games to pull from. When you factor in the fantastic art design from Todd McFarlane and the enthrallin...

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Review 0

The aspects of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning that place it in everyone’s mind as an Elder Scrolls knock-off disguised in a bright, cartoonish atmosphere are probably the least important of all. Yes, you are in a rich fantasy world fighting typical fairy-tale type monsters. Yes, you can choose to play as a decent, upstanding individual or to roam the world looting what is not rightfully yours. In 2012, these are common facets in most great open-world games. It is the fully realized manner in whic...

A mix of systems from other games pays off for Big Huge Games 0

As an entire experience, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning provides enjoyable, yet not entirely original gameplay. With a main storyline lasting somewhere between 13 and 15 hours, and another 30 - 40 hours of faction and side quests you can easily justify paying $60 for this title. If you are willing to forgive the lack of quality in the side quests. The area transitions are just one of the similarities between Reckoning and Ocarina of Time. Before this game came out, most people were comparing it to ...

    Solid DLC add-on 0

OK, this DLC can be really, really short or somewhat lengthy, depending on what you actually want to accomplish. If you wish to just tackle the Dead Kel storyline, that takes less than 3 hours to finish. But, there is a lot more to do in this pack than just the main storyline. There is a huge keep to rebuild. There are numerous caves to deal with. There is a large enemy area that you have to tackle that is laden with dozens of enemies in a small area. They even change up the environment, providi...

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Review 0

The lackluster gameplay world of the modern RPG has finally met their match with Kingdoms of Amalur. Even after 40 hours, I was still chugging along at quests through the expansive world the game has to offer at ease. Every second I spent tuned into my character was a second of fun that felt well spent. I didn’t feel sorry for myself after a ten-hour play time session like I sometimes feel in games like Fallout or Skyrim. I came away from the game saying to myself, “Wow, that was a blast!”Amalu...

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning ReviewBy: Andrew BohnenbergerKingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a single-player fantasy action role-playing game developed by 38 Studios and Big Huge Games. The game was released on February 7, 2012 and published by EA Partners for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. With big names like Ken Rolston, R.A. Salvatore, and Todd McFarklene attached to this game, does Amalur have what it takes to compete with the Elder Scrolls,Fable, and the Dragon Age Series?Sto...

An Entertaining Romp Through Well Trod Territories. 0

One of the things about reviewing, be it games, films, books, music, is that all too often the subject matter in hand is interesting in inception but poorly carried through. You sit there and think that the writer, the director, the animators, sound guys, whoever, somehow misjudged either work itself, or more often their ability to bring the product to life. In the end what is produced tends to be a mishmash of poorly put together elements whose only real appeal lies in the strength of the origi...

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Fails To Reckon 0

Before I started up Kingdom of Amalur Reckoning, I was completely skeptical about what 38 studios was promising to bring to the table. Even though 38 studios was founded by Curt Schilling, a former Boston Red Sox’s pitcher. It has some impressive talent behind the game, which drew my interest towards the game. Ken Rolston, who is mostly known for being the lead designer for Elder Scrolls “Morrowind” and “Oblivion”. Todd Mcfalane, who was the creator of spawn and lastly R.A Salvatore, who is a we...

    The Gamers RPG 0

KoA:R is one of the funnest games I've played in a long time. It's beautiful and compelling, The art is vibrant and colorful on a scale that I haven't seen before. Where Skyrim goes for a realistic world, Reckoning gives you a place of wonder and imagination. I stop myself from playing every now and then and just look at some of the art they built into the game and It's amazing how Unique all the dungeons and areas are.The combat is really fun and easy to jump into, I have a rogue right now and ...

    KOA: Reckoning Review 0

What is it like to die and what happens after? Do we watch the ants of humanity from above or burn in eternal torment wishing less time spent on selfish goals and pleasures of the flesh. The story of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning takes a look at life, death, and rebirth in ways that many games shy away from. The age of immortals is coming to an end and the time for the mortal races has begun. This RPG from Big Huge Games and 38 Studios starts the player off as a dead body being carted off to the...

Kinda like Borderlands meets Oblivion 1

Kingdom of Amalur is an amazingly fun and addictive game, focused deeply on equiping your character with the best weapons, skills, and buffs to fight your way through the wonderfully visualized world and creatures. The story of the game, meaning the components that come your way via the main quest are excellent. Great cut scenes, great storytelling, and just plain fun to experience. Same goes for the faction quests, which are equally well done. However, if you play the game seeking a greater...

A decent game, dragged down by some bad design choices 0

Role-playing games are going to have a hard time of it in 2012. They will be competing for gamer’s attention with probably the two biggest RPG releases of the last 5 years, Star wars: The Old Republic and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. There is hope for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning however, if it can carve out its own identity against these two titans of the genre and present something different and interesting for those players already bored with what 2011 had to offer them.At a glance Kingdoms ...

KOA: Boy have we stuffed a lot of stuff in here. 0

KOA: Reckoning has a lot of good points.Varied locations, fun combat (mostly), loads of NPCs to chat up, lots of loot, some crafting and a lot of lore. The variety of locations - forest, plains, desert, wasteland, etc. are well done. You have a scope of a large world and various cities dotting the landscape. There are hidden areas to stumble across and rewards for doing so. Some of the towns seem somewhat vacant, but numerous NPCs clogging the street only make for frustating gameplay to me.The co...

    The King of Kings 0

We have played them for years. Stat-driven role playing games make the very base of gaming culture. Whether you know it or not, the game you are playing is using the fundamentals of pen and paper role playing. To take on the world of true open role playing is a feat that deserves respect. To conquer it, that deserves your reverence. You may have heard the split reviews praising this game for it's combat system while degrading the game for it's lack of ingenuity. I have also heard and read a lot o...

    Kingdoms of Amalur:Reckoning 0

Pretty much my only problem (aside from a few bugs) when i played Kingdoms of Amalur:Reckoning is that it kinda felt like the quests (excluding the faction quests and main quest) were from an MMO. then i read about the game and realized it was supposed to be an MMO but it seems like they didn't bother to unMMO the side quests. Other then that the combat was great even though some of the fancy weapon skills and spells were kinda useless and it was better just to click the left mouse button like c...

    Busy Work 0

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, feels like it began life as an MMO. This is both a good thing and a bad thing - on the good side, there's a ton of content, loot, environments and progression in this game. On the bad side.... it feels utterly soulless and empty. That's not from a lack of imagination, though. Reckoning boasts a well-written world, large environments and tons of voice-acted dialogue. However, the shallow interactions, completely blank-slate protagonists, the lack of any real change a...

    Very MMO-ish 0

One of the newer trends in RPG's is to take the MMO system of assorted people giving you a wealth of quests to do that you will complete in order to unlock the story. The more you do, the more you comprehend.KoA takes it to a bit of an extreme. The game is insanely long and, eventually, you have to quit and just minimize what you're doing. After 76 hours, there were still several dozen quests and tasks I simply didn't want to deal with any longer and just completed the game and its first DLC pac...

    Kingdoms of Amalur Review 0

Kingdoms of Amalur is the first big game out the the studio founded by Red Sox Pitching Ace, Curt Schilling. It also employed the artistic skills of Todd McFarlane, and the storytelling power of R.A. Salvatore. You will take on the roll of a character who has already died, and yet somehow was able to return to life thanks to a device called the Well of Souls. You will not be able to remember your previous life, but you will have an advantage to all that live within the realms, you are outside of...

    Fantastic, But Flawed RPG. 0

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning isn't a game I had any plans on playing as quickly as I did. I didn't know much about the game until the demo dropped, and even walking away from that demo, I was left with a kind of "meh" feeling about the whole thing. It wasn't until watching a friend play through a majority of the game that I felt inclined to give the game a try. (I also have to throw in there that a nice hole in my gaming schedule was created when "Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City was relea...

    A Fun RPG 0

I've always enjoyed Amalur and it's one I find myself coming back to on occasion. It feels like a mix of Fable and a little of Oblivion. It has a nice stylized look to it with a good fluid combat system. It has the Elder Scrolls style of not picking a class and just playing whatever feels good. It's other RPG trappings like Alchemy and Blacksmithing are a little shallow but they get the basic concepts right. Most of the story is pretty good and some side quests are very good but don't get sucke...

If you liked Reckoning you'll like Dead Kel 0

While the Legend of Dead Kel DLC isn't a massive leap in any real significant direction from the initial form and structure of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckonings main campaign if you enjoyed what that game already offered you'll be pleased with this additional content. Don't expect to be blown away however. In terms of story Kel's is at least somewhat interesting but as a character he isn't terribly well fleshed out. His archetype itself is pretty familiar; the tired old pirate who has been dead for ...
