Update: The official website is fully online now, with more than just the front page and a few screenshots. Enjoy.

Original: The super tough homage to the MSX is heading to WiiWare with updated 16-bit style visuals according to the latest Nintendo Power issue. I guess this makes it a not-MSX-homage anymore but whatever, it should be great if it's anything like the Cave Story adaptation :-)

    Here's the first trailer.

Here's how the game looked pre-Wii.

Here's some info about the PC freebie for those who don't know what I'm talking about.

Wait, this is that thing that's like Cave Story except it's also like Indiana Jones and it has some semblance of difficulty, right?

Yeah "semblance of difficulty" is a big understatement. This game is balls to the walls hard, especially if you explore the post-main quest stuff.

I'm pumped for this new release even if I don't have a Wii because my current Vista laptop's drivers can't run it. I reckon I'll be visiting a friend of mine until I'm done with it...

Yeah it did remind me of Cave Story a lot. And that's a good thing.

That looks great - it's been given a welcome lift yet remains considerate to the source.

Gameplay video, still some placeholder sprites (like that fugly boss).

Also in the latest blog post they're asking people to provide more feedback so they can improve more.

More gameplay testing (lots of placeholders and other issues, but most of the backgrounds are lovely).

More blog updates, the latest showing the new versions of the enemy sprites (they said "normal" so I guess they don't mean the bosses). They're certainly neat and much more fitting with the new visuals than the single color 8-bit looking placeholders from the past videos.

It looks awesome, I love all the subtle graphical effects, which display both it's retro charm and modernity.. The game appears to be a good excuse for a remake -it looks like it's been made with love.

I hope the submission and testing stage doesn't take too long, it would be nice to have this as soon as.

    edit:

The Item screen looks way too busy in the first video

Fucking hell, that's amazing. In a true callback to old gaming sort of way.

Man, say what you will about XBLA and PSN. But Wiiware gets it's share of really, really neat software. I think it's because XBLA quickly went past 2D games (despite it's most successful game being a hand drawn 2D brawler) and PSN is now sort of digitally distributing software that's either could-be-but-not-really software that could be sold in stores or artsy stuff. Wiiware gets the cool classic revivals.

Updated the La Mulana page since the WiiWare version is working its way to release.  I'm always surprised at how few people have played the PC game, considering that it's free.  It has amazing depth compared to both the games its trying to emulate and most Metroidvania games today.   It also has a much greater amount of required exploration and puzzle solving compared to almost any game out there.  I suppose the difficulty tends to turn people off - one required tower climb in particular is just annoyingly hard - but still, great game.

Looking forward to both this and Cave Story coming out if only so I can put some money in the pockets of these people for giving me so many hours of great gaming.  Though I hope they have the ability to use the old midi tunes, the original had some great retro gaming music.

@iAmJohn: It wasn't just for him. Don't be a dick. I was just letting people now it is still coming and the development team gave an update on it's status. Worth posting but not worth starting a dedicated thread. Also you are a dick.

(There maybe something wrong with me as you are the third person I have felt compelled to call a dick today. But I really do think you are a dick)

@iAmJohn: But that does not seem worthy of a dedicated thread. Plus this one already has cool videos and such for people who maybe are not aware of this game. I get being bitchy about resurrecting dead threads with no reason. I guess I just felt that it was justified. You don't. Seems petty.
