It's becoming more and more common for Xbox 360 games to arrive on multiple discs, especially RPGs with cutscenes o' plenty--Final Fantasy XII, Lost Odyssey. id Software's said their open world shooter Rage will be distributed across two discs on Microsoft's platform. Rockstar Games is the latest to join the multiple disc club with L.A. Noire, as Kotaku reports it cover three discs on Xbox 360 later this month.

"To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs," said Rockstar VP of development Jeronimo Barrera.

Rockstar pointed to the game's heavily promoted MotionScan tech, responsible for making the facial expressions of the game's characters so unlike anything we've seen before, as consuming the space.

Those beautifully realistic faces apparently take up just a tiny bit of space.

I prefer more dvds if the quality of the game justify it. I dont mind swapping Disc every couple of hours. If thats a problem for anyone then I remind that Humans have legs and arms ,which can be used sometimes for more thing than eating ball pizzas... wait?! PIZZA!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I was gonna buy it on ps3 so this wouldn't effect me, but it's good to know there will be plenty of content on that blu ray.

im stunned by the consistent hatred of multi-discs. i get it, it's inconvenient, really. maybe its because i sit close to my box so i dont have toget up to switch discs, but even if i had to, it's certainly not deal breaking

I do hope this is an indication that there is going to be a whole bunch of content and that it isn't purely the motionscan stuff that's taking up all that extra room (maybe just some of it). It's a Rockstar game, so I'm sure there'll be a good amount of content outside of the critical path regardless, I just wouldn't be too quick to assume this means we're getting a mind-boggling amount of content.

I wonder if it will force us to disc swap if it is "installed"?

Also, since the huge size is due to the faces, and not hours of gameplay, I wonder if that means crazy long load times?

@CoheedFavorHouse: My 360 was especially loud when you didn't install a game before playing it, and 3 discs means 3 installs. The hard drive could only hold one install at a time so at that point I'd just as soon buy the game on PS3.

I hope microsoft just shoves a HDDVD drive into their next console. It doesn't have to be bluray, just a format that can hold near bluray or equal to it. I dont know who would manufacture them for M$, but they dont need to license bluray from sony. Even if the next console cant play blurays, the games need to be on par with their competitor since thats what most of us on the net  analyze the most about new consoles, how do they compare to each other.

I found that issue a bit of an annoyance when I played Mass Effect 2. I believe that each section of the game's story is a disc's worth.

$ony don't own blu-ray, it's a standard format.  Microsoft licencing it would be no different from licencing DVD to be used.  The next system will almost certainly use them, unless HVD's have replaced them by then (which is unlikely for another few years).

Microsoft will have to make a decision to either go Blu Ray or digital for their next console. No way will people tolerate swapping 10 discs in the future.

Getting it on PS3 anyway. Can't wait!

Changing discs kind of pisses me off but I play on Xbox so If I'm gonna get it I'll get it there I imagine.

When is using Blu-Ray discs for games going to substantially improve the quality of the game? At the moment almost every multi-platform game (PS3/360) is comparable if not identical. Mandatory installs and long load times seem to diminish the benefit of the space.

Maybe when Microsoft jump on the Blu-Ray bandwagon developers would be able to justify making games that wouldn't work on DVDs or maybe when the hardware improves to the point where "Data Read" speeds are high enough to put all the storage space to work.

A friend brought Gran Turismo round when It came out and between the install (which we aborted) and the loading you'd be forgiven for expecting to be blown away when the "game" part actually started.

My basic point is that while the PS3 version of this game won't come with the hassle of swapping discs; shouldn't there be some simple mathematical benefit to having so much space that would make the Blu-Ray version run and look better?
