I do not trust/read newspaper video game reviews... might as well read the recommendations for games in Playboy
It seems a little flippant for people to dismiss the review entirely just because it comes from a newspaper. Sure, the daily print media doesn't necessarily have the best track record when it comes to games journalism, but The Guardian is one, possibly the only, that actually does pretty good reviews for video games.
I never usually read the guardians reviews but seeing as its the only one that seems to be out there at the moment why not.
After reading it I remember why, the guardian seems to review games in a way that takes the fun out of them completely.
" "Rockstar reckons it's roughly equivalent in length to two seasons of a TV series, a claim that feels roughly accurate."Some people don't care about length, but this rough estimate tells me it should be around 40 to 50 hours. Well, if they're talking about a 60 minute crime drama. "Nah, no TV series is over 20 hours long. 30 hours seems about right.
Any word on differences between platforms, I'm nitpicky (and I'm just about to pre-order) and need to know which version to get.
" Any word on differences between platforms, I'm nitpicky (and I'm just about to pre-order) and need to know which version to get.The PS3 version may have slightly better graphics since it was the lead platform, but other than that (and what you already listed), nah. Again generally comes down to whether you prefer the bing of an Achievement, or the ding of a trophy.I know about the disc swapping and PSN being down forever, but anything other than that?"

PS3. It only makes you lazy.
" @TheSeductiveMoose said:Yeah I think that's going to be the deciding factor here. Differences are goign to be minimal. If you download the 'Gameplay' vids on Xbox Live, it shows the 360 version of the game. A, X and Y buttons and all. It looks pretty much identical." For me, I'm a Achievement man and I prefer the 360's triggers for controlling cars and guns. Disc swapping is a non-issue for me. I will spend more time in this game looking at the pause menu's map, or my in-game notebook, than swapping discs.
" @Delta_Ass: Wait for more people to have a word about it before you write it off. At least see what Jeff has to say about how it feels. "i loved the GTA IV shooting.. i've no idea what clunkiness people are talking about
I'm actually more interested in it now that I know the shooting isn't a main component. The thing that took me out of games like GTA and RDR was the fact the the character was killing hundreds of people with no repercussions. Uncharted 2 got the same reaction from a lot of people as well. I can't wait for this game despite the fact that I have to.
Everyone that didn't see the review last night, rest assured, those bites at the beginning of this thread are the most important parts. The review was maybe a paragraph or two more content, and there'ss nothing in there other than the usual "This game is well made" stuff you see in 5 star reviews.

My big problem with GTA IV's shooting is the cover mechanic. Sure, it's not as refined as Gears or Uncharted, but Niko takes so long to pop out of cover and go back. Same goes for the animation for blind firing.
@PrivateIronTFU said:I too thought the shooting in GTA IV was very good. Maybe it was clunky when compared to other games? But all I was thinking of was how improved it was over the old GTA shooting mechanics." I have never felt that the GTA IV shooting was clunky. People are insane. "Right on brother. I'm with you. And it was even better in RDR.
We all remember them don't we? When pressing the 'Lock-On' button would lock onto an enemy behind you and you'd get disorientated by the all camera swinging. Meanwhile, the guy you were trying to lock on too has already emptied half a clip into you...
As long as L.A. Noire doesn't bring back that, in an effort to bring in non-shooter players, I'll be happy. I'd also be happy with a lot less shooting. Even in RDR which was a fairly good shooter I kept thinking to myself, "John Marston seems like a good guy! Yet I've killed more than a thousand men, a couple hundred wolves and put bullets into almost all the wild animals."
BLASTED! I didn't get to read it due to that embargo. Does anyone have info on when this embargo is up? I find it really stupid to put them up in the first place. Most gamers wait for reviews anyway.
(edit: what i mean by wait for reviews is most people (or is it just me) wait to see if the game is broken or something)

I think the shooting in itself in RDR and even GTA IV is fine. It's more the 3d person action that is clunky. With how you have your dude run and then to aim to shoot something, it feels like controlling a tank on occasions. Bad turn radius and not much speed. It worked as long as people didn't start to swarm you and you were having to fight dudes at close range. In RDR it worked better since you had the dead eye thing. It helped a lot in taking care of bad guys that came to close up in your grill while the regular shooting worked fine on fools at a distance. Well and them not having machine guns, of course.@PrivateIronTFU said:

I don´t take for serious anyone who come out with the good old ridicolous ¨Citizen Kane¨ analogy.. Honestly that´s comparing apples with bananas and IMO is just an unconscious show of inferiority complex by some ¨journalist¨ in the industry..Official Xbox Magazine UK's reviews has leaked online as well. Another perfect score.
“If you were expecting L.A Noire to be a reskinned GTA then you will be left severely disappointed. Many times we hear, “Who will be gaming’s Citizen Kane?”. Personally, I don’t have the gall to say L.A Noire is that type of game. But it is a game that will revolutionize the gaming industry as we know it. Never in my 20 year history of gaming have I encountered a game with as much finesse, intelligence, and attention to detail as L.A Noire, and for that I applaud L.A Noire. A game which has the nerve to do so much, in an industry where a seldom few are.”
