Rockstar Games' L.A. Noire Hitting May 17

Doing anything this summer? No? Great, because here’s a game you can check out: L.A. Noire, Rockstar Games’ open-world crime thriller, hits North American store shelves on May 17, 2011 for the Xbox 360 and PS3. A European release on both consoles will follow three days later on May 20, 2011.

Rockstar confirmed these dates earlier this morning after a leaked trailer let the US release date slip in advance of its marketing department’s wishes. You can view it now in all its “official” glory just below.

L.A. Noire is a Team Bondi-developed game, and an ambitious one at that. According to reports, the title has a 300-page script and focuses as much on character and narrative as your typical, loosey-goosey Rockstar Games open-world joint. Team Bondi has put a lot of effort into the facial motion capture for the game, which theoretically should make for some interesting conversations and such.

The game's story revolves around a cop named Cole Phelps, a do-gooder with a secret who's fresh out of World War II. As Phelps, you’ll investigate and solve crimes and also deal with a police department steeped in scandals during the 1940s. L.A. Noire is the second May release in a row for Rockstar, who also shipped Red Dead Redemption around the same time last year.

Dammit. I really want this game, too.

I love the theme and the era. Let's just hope it's as good as it has the potential to be.

So you post the video by itself, and then and article about the video? That makes perfect sense, top notch work.

No PC version, no way to care about anything outside of the great technical achievements who deserve many rewards by themselves, putting a game this beautiful on these old clunker consoles. May the PS3 version be decent :|

THATS MA BIRTHDAY!!! BOOM!! iknow what i want!! lol

Using the old x-number of pages script argument. Oh noes, the last game I remember bragging about script size was Haze. At least the game looks good.

#9 Posted by yyZiggurat (1015 posts) -

Awesome.  Thats about the same time RDR came out.

#10 Posted by MikkaQ (10283 posts) -

This is shaping up to be a more interesting Heavy Rain or something, with Mafia II elements. I'm just super excited about this.

I wrote a 500 page fanfiction script for Haze, they'll totally use it for the sequel.

I want this so bad it hurts.

Makes me sad to see Rockstar abandon the PC. Was looking forward to this game, but now I'm going to wait for the bargain bin since I hate playing these kind of games with controllers.

May of last year is when I picked up another Rockstar game I knew nothing about. And that ended up being my favorite game of the year.

Could this do it again? Only Rockstar....

My first ever comment, and yes... it's a negative one (sorry)

" Hey, that sounds like a perfect time for an open-world crime thriller."

Is the tagline for this article... But the game actually isn't open-world. Rockstar have said that themselves.

I could of sworn Rockstar was developing this

On Norway's Nation Day, awesome

btw, same date as Witcher 2 :)

This looks very cool, I love the unique era.

I'm not big into this kind of stuff, but it looks cool.

There is some wicked uncanny valley going on in this trailer.

I hope it's better than Red Dead Redemtion was. Not that it was a bad game, just not as good as everyone raved about.

Damn this game is looking goooood!
#27 Posted by McGhee (6094 posts) -

Yeah OK Sure Maybe

#28 Posted by Sooty (8082 posts) -

Bad writing, stop referring to this as a Rockstar game. jeesh.

#29 Posted by KillerBears (248 posts) -

still waiting for gameplay

...yeah I'm probably gonna buy it though.

#30 Posted by RubberFactory (288 posts) -

Holy shit! This looks amazing.

#31 Posted by Gaagie (19 posts) -

It's Rockstar, so it can't fail right? Can't wait!

Agreed.  Cautiously optomistic.  I await Giant Bomb's review!  (I'm married I'm in no rush to buy games. :) )

It's published by Rockstar Games. That's like saying Crysis doesn't count as an EA game.

what?!  oh man I see I'm going to have to do some planning and make a hard choice here.  no idea which one i'll end up getting.  need more gameplay footage.  There are just too many good games coming out this year!
#36 Posted by Zelnox (387 posts) -

So cool. I should play RDR first, eh?

#37 Posted by Forever (100 posts) -

Woot, comes out on my birthday! I have high hopes after playing RDR.

#38 Posted by Th3_James (2576 posts) -

I would have liked to see this and RDR on PC even though I played it on 360 and own a ps3.

#39 Posted by mracoon (4967 posts) -

I'd like to see gameplay of this. It's coming out in less than 4 months but I don't think they've shown any footage of what you'll actually be doing most of the time.

It's the same open world formula game that Rockstar have been rehashing for a decade, right? So...
#41 Posted by Artisan88 (43 posts) -

I dunno about that facetech, I mean the faces look realistic, but they are too good in comparison to the rest of the model. So to me it just looks like they cut out a live human face and glued it onto a robot. Kind of creepy. Still interested in the game though.

#42 Posted by AgentofChaos (1565 posts) -

This may be the only game I have pre-ordered in the past 5 years.

#43 Posted by DystopiaX (5300 posts) -

Awesome. Looking forward to the lie detecting, awesome face technology, and the story. One of the most underhyped facts about the game is that every case they took from the game is actually based on a real-life crime that happened in 1940s LA- they went to archived newspapers and pulled those stories...should make the crimes feel realistic, at least.

#44 Posted by Paulrus (244 posts) -

I love the technology, but I'm skeptical if it'll be any good.

#45 Edited by Seppli (10251 posts) -

I'm just about to get hyped for L.A. Noire and woooot, it's just around the corner!

Rockstar really knows how to hit the hype sweetspot with a prompt release like no other.

Not to mention the official website says in big bold print "Rockstar Presents: L.A. Noire".

Its so damn smooth,I must obtain this aswomeness of a game.

#48 Posted by Afroman269 (7387 posts) -

It all looks good so far, but I would like to see some damn gameplay. That's the only thing that I have a feeling will be sub-par.

GOTY 2011! Can't wait.
