The signature Gears of War assault rifle, the Lancer is equipped with a chainsaw bayonet.
Overview
The Lancer Assault Rifle is by far one of the signature weapons of Gears Of War, specifically it's ability to use the chainsaw bayonet that is attached to it. In the original Gears Of War, the only counter for the chainsaw was to fire on the player/enemy revving the weapon. It forced them to move back and stumble a bit as well as stop revving the chainsaw. Once you got in a certain range of the weapon being used (not on your team), you are automatically chainsawed in two pieces. In Gears Of War 2, if two opposing players run at each other with their revved chainsaws, a quick-hit button pressing ensues with the one able to hit the button faster becoming the victor and chainsawing the enemy. If the button press speed of both players is the same, the characters simply push off of each other. The Lancer is the primary assault rifle for the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) in the Gears of War series. It is most known for the Chainsaw Bayonet on the bottom of the weapon. By pressing and holding in the 'B Button', the chainsaw will rev up and suck anything in within a small distance of a few feet, leaving them in a pile of bloody chunks, in which you can kick around by walking into. The act of chainsawing someone also gave the player a quick few seconds of invincibility until the animation was completed, not allowing them to escape a player camping behind them. The gun itself is very powerful, allowing for fully-automatic fire. The rifle holds a maximum of 660 rounds, with 60 bullets in one magazine. It is normally a medium-range weapon, but can also be quite effective at close range. At medium range it can down an enemy in merely a few seconds.
Multiplayer
In Gears of War, the Lancer went quite unused in online multiplayer, mainly due to net code issues. The host of a game in Gears of War, however, has a very powerful Lancer, which people refer to as "Host Lancer". Where for normal players, the Lancer isn't quite as effective as other weapons, the host of a game has no Lancer issues whatsoever, it works just like it would Campaign mode for them (obviously a net code flaw), allowing them to down a player by merely blind firing the Lancer, even at melee range. With the Lancer in its current state, the majority of players online quickly learned that the Gnasher Shotgun was the route to go, since not only could they rush a person head on while taking Lancer fire, it was quite effective in medium to close range combat. The Gears of War 2 Lancer has made several improvements from the original. First of all, it has had a graphical facelift, with a new scope and bullet tracing, allowing for players to see where they are being fired upon from. As stated previously, there is also a 'stopping power' effect, slowing roadie runners until they come to a sudden halt, without ridding of their ability to take cover behind an object. The chainsaw bayonet has also seen some upgrades. There are now many more chainsaw abilities the player can participate in. In Gears of War, when two players would collide with chainsaws, the outcome was thought by players as random. Obviously there was more that went into than that, but to fix this problem, Chainsaw duels have been added. When two players collide with chainsaws, they engage in a battle to the death. Whoever presses the 'B Button' the fastest wins the duel by sawing their opponent into a bloody mess. Also added was what Epic developers call the 'Chainsodomy', which is when a player flips their chainsaw upside down and sawing the opponent from the bottom up. This move can be executed by standing behind someone while revving up the chainsaw bayonet.
