Valve is taking a backseat approach to the development of a brand new Left 4 Dead 2 campaign that’ll be part of a bigger DLC package for the title, which will also see the conversion and release of the three remaining campaigns from the original Left 4 Dead. News of this comes via the official L4D blog.

The brand new campaign, titled “Cold Stream” at the moment, is a mod being created by Matthew Lourdelet. Valve gave the man props at the start of the post, saying that it was digging the promise of his arena-based idea. But instead of creating the content purely on its lonesome with Lourdelet, the studio is tasking its community for suggestions and opinions on the project. It’s even set up a new forum where people can discuss the content, which should see a beta release soon.

== TEASER ==Keeping it simple, Valve is putting some project constraints in place. As stated in the blog post, these campaigns will have zero audio and no story to speak off. Also, the DLC won’t launch until after Portal 2 ships on April 20, and even then the DLC will be on “Valve Time.”

“The very first step in creating a new DLC is deciding on the larger goals and constraints for the DLC. The Sacrifice and the Passing were story heavy, so we want to see what the other end of the spectrum looks like,” the post reads. “For this DLC we start with wanting to experiment by releasing a map pack that wasn’t about story. It would just be new campaigns for Left 4 Dead 2.”

A joint effort sounds fun, but there’s no telling when we’ll actually see the content in an official form. As Valve fans well know, the studio takes its time, and only releases stuff “when it’s done.” If you’re anxious, you could try Cold Stream in its testing form when it sees a release in the next couple of weeks.

I remember a time when people demanded Dlc for this. Now no one wants anything to do with it.

If there's no story, they should let you pick from any of the 8 survivors to play as.

Also, they should add walking animations to the pistols. And fix Smoker-reeling animations and make it not look like the zombies are skating on ice when they move around.

It's about time they put all the old maps in. I guess they had to wait a while to keep up the pretence that they were not totally shafting the first game.

If only more developers functioned like Valve, or were allowed to function like Valve. I imagine other studios could pump out great work if they were allowed similar freedoms as well but that would be too big a risk in the minds of most of the big wigs.

I don't care about the other campaigns. I'm just glad that L4D1 is now fully ported to L4D2.

Holy typographical errors in today's articles..... NFS one also has an error.

I don't understand why they're spending time porting the L4D1 campaigns to L4D2. How does that even make sense from a business perspective? Now there will be absolutely no point in buying the first game anymore (unless you're a L4D1 purist).

I'm always up for new campaigns though so I hope "Cold Stream" will be good.

Will there be a patch for the playerbase too, or will I have to start playing Realism mode to find decent people on the PC?

This is honestly the most exciting news I've heard in months. I loved all the original characters so much more than the new ones, I'm pumped for this!

I love Valve. They are so ballsy when it comes to release dates to the point that now even Valve just announces something as coming out in "Valve Time".

@TorMasturba:  They mean they won't be recording any new dialog for the characters. Any important dialog, like the church guy encounter in Death Toll, will just be ported over. They're treating Cold Stream as non-canon and just as simply a map to play on thus negating the need for character interaction or story.

I just love Valve's system, think it should be the benchmark for GDs nowadays.
