Dead Good
I have always been a fan of the good old zombie movies. Nothing beats a bunch of survivers fighting for survival against the inevitable zombie apocolypse and as the Bombcast stated this game isnt a game its training.
A major problem I have with the zombie movie genre is the point of explanation. " Theres some sort of infection that drives them crazy and they start killing people". This is all wrong if im wandering to work one day and I see someone eating a dude im gonna yell ITS A FUCKING ZOMBIE! Thats what left 4 dead does so well no explanation just bam they are zombies you have guns.
The game is split up into four movies which are essentially levels with 5 checkpoints. These go through some classic scenes involving your team starting out in a bit of a pickle and having to fight through the horde to an intense last stand as you wait for the arrival of your rescue. The horde is crazy zombies which are more 28 days later than dawn of the dead. Although to liven up the game a bit the AI director will throw special zombies at you ranging from the fast and scrappy hunters to the massive hulk of a tank. These become your real challenge throughout the game although the huge mass of the horde can catch you unawares and split up your team.
The game is entirely coop focused which is a great step forward for this kind of game. The team is built of the usual misfits the working stiff, the kick ass lady, the badass veteran and the angry biker. These character models are brilliant you find yourself looking at them rather than their health bars to see how their doing. Its just brilliant.
Multiplayer is not only great for the story but the competative multiplayer is great you can play through the movies as normal however, this time the special zombies are in the control of your opposing team. Playing as the zombies is really great your health is so limited, minus the tank, that you really have to plan your attacks and stalk your prey.
Left 4 Dead is one of my favourite games of this year the 4 stars is merely a lack of content the story is over in about 4 hours although with the possibility of free DLC nowadays the possibilities excite me. This game is brilliant and you must play it, I really wish I could give this game 5 stars.
